That slight feeling of sadness after the rush of landing and safe exit as you roll slowly back towards the humdrum existence of life on the ground...

I never feel a sadness after I land an aircraft, I've enjoyed the challenge of landing and there is a small bit of relief to have landed safely, but no sadness! While I felt free when I flew more than any other time in my existence, and was used to crosswind landings and unusual varying terrain at my airport in the pattern, I always loved it! You are grateful your aircraft didn't have any problems and got you down safely, but when taxiing in, you just feel glad and you have a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment!

Hi everyone. There's something I do not understand : on the PFD, at around 4:56, we can see that the altitude AGL (i.e. Above Ground Level) is 1320 ft (displayed in a white color on the upper-right corner just to the right of the "FD" letters). However, the altitude ASL (i.e. Above Sea Level) is about 6600 ft. On the hours I spent on Flight Simulator, I think I recall that the AGL altitude should be displayed everywhere on the PFD. Or am I mistaken ?
@rens9313
@rens9313 4 жыл бұрын
The white is a radar altimeter. It is an active rader which gives us a better understanding of the last 2500' AGL. Especially useful for the last 100' and the flare.

Is it a thing to establish an ILS approach and manually fly the glideslope?
@KevinMullenger

No. You can not just manually fly the glideslope alone. The localizer and glideslope are either both captured by autopilot OR both being handflown manually. However, you can manually fly the localizer alone, without glideslope.

Maybe this is a silly question, i love airplane's and aviation a lot, but i know nothing about (airplane) technology. The 747 is a rather old airplane, i believe it's fist flight was at the end of the 60's. The 747's who fly in present time; are they still completely like the origins, with the same cockpit-equipment or do they get upgraded everytime with the newest technology? Many thanks ahead for your answers. And i LOVE 747's, sometimes i seem them landing behind big lines of trees at Amsterdam Airport from a long distance; that image is just majestically.
@KevinMullenger
@KevinMullenger 5 жыл бұрын
They are upgraded with new Avionics, new Engines, new Automation. This is why the B747-100 was first, followed by -200, -300, -400, & now the newest -8.
@supportmanualflying2224
@supportmanualflying2224 5 жыл бұрын
Whatever that is good is kept,eg. the Great systems design. (eg. 747 has 4 hydraulic systems instead of 3 or even two. This increases the safety.) But what can be improved will be improved like what Mr. Kevin said. Also the 747-8 has a more robust landing gear that can carry so much weight and absorb the forces of landing so well.(However the landing gear of the classic 747s were of top quality as well).The 747-8 also has an updated air-conditioning system (PACKS) among other upgrades.However because the design of the 747-400 is so good some of the older tech is still used,it seems they just perform better than the new tech equipment,in short the best of old and new tech in a beautiful,comfortable and high performance plane. 747 is one of the planes that prove that being old doesn't mean one is of low quality(another example is the DC-3),in fact I would fly a 747-200B instead of an A350-1000 (given that both have good maintenance and are flown by good pilots and the 747-200 is equipped with TCAS and etc.)

You gotta love modern auto-pilot systems! I had always assumed pilots took full control during landings, but it appears in this video pilots dial in desired heading and altitude and the plane takes it from there. Automobiles will soon have that level of automation
@seanrana1003
@seanrana1003 4 жыл бұрын
KamakaziOzzie actually in this video, the pilots were hand flying the approach, which is not so common for standard airlines but still its very cool. I think it would be a lot safer if cars could have similar warning systems and redundant technologies that planes have.
@kamakaziozzie3038
@kamakaziozzie3038 4 жыл бұрын
Sean Rana I learn something new every day! I had just assumed it was auto-pilot as they were adjusting speed/altitude/heading dials during the approach. Why were they doing that?
@seanrana1003
@seanrana1003 4 жыл бұрын
@@kamakaziozzie3038 Great question! Usually it is used as a memory item but also to command the flight directors. So technically, you still tune the computer and you follow the "commands" you input into the system, but instead of the autopilot system controlling the flight controls, you do it.

Why do the engines sound like they are running erratically? Wouldn't they run at a particular speed as determined by the throttle?
@deltaflyer1997
@deltaflyer1997 7 жыл бұрын
Auto throttle means the throttle is constantly automatically adjusting to match the selected airspeed, assuming it is in speed mode. If in thrust, it automatically sets at idle on decent, meaning the pilot is manually controlling the throttle.

I was trained as a commercial pilot in the US and am always surprised to see these videos in which the pilot constantly adjusts the throttle on approach or seesaws the yoke. I was taught to to stabilize the airplane as early as possible then let it fly, and the FAA requires that a pilot make no major changes on approach. Yes, winds change as one descends but normally not enough to require what I'm seeing.

You've got to be kidding! They have the best view of all! Today's large aircraft have more wind-screen (wider) view so you don't see just in front of you. It's a great feeling, coming in for a landing -- always exciting for me from the very first time I ever flew until right now, decades later. Of course you can't see behind you, but you don't need to! I flew in a helicopter once, in a bubble-cockpit aircraft, and I could look right down between my feet and see below...somehow, I didn't like that a lot!
