The Oscar winning Pixar film won over critics and audiences, but did Doug also get sucked into the music of Coco?

FINALLY someone who understands "follow your dreams" is the side-plot of the story! SO many reviewers start this with "Yeah, this story' been told a million times" when it hasn't. The main focus in this story is remembering the dead and how important it is to be connected to those who lived before you. I've been asking my grandma for all the info on her mother and grandparents cause this movie makes me realize I know nothing about my family's story and I've gotten a lot of background I didn't know.

To me the brilliance of this movie and some other Pixar films is that they take a theme that is so universally known, accepted, and never questioned and, well, question it. The Incredibles challenged the theme of "everyone is special" by arguing that saying everyone is special means that no one is special. Finding Nemo challenged the idea of parents as protectors and argued instead for children to learn from their own experience and mistakes. Coco's main theme is a direct challenge to the classic idea of "follow your dreams." The movie instead argues that there are some things in life that are more important, like your family. Miguel upon learning how much he does love his family, he's willing to give up music forever to save them. And in the final climatic moment, he uses music not to placate his own passions like de la Cruz, but to instead heal long-time wounds in his family. It's just beautiful.

The Un Poco Loco scene is there for multiple reasons: 1) More bonding between Miguel and Hector. 2) More tension because his family is at the venue looking for him. 3) This is the first time Miguel has ever had the opportunity to perform in public. It's important for his chracter growth. 4) As you mentioned, yeah, more music. 5) To provide a way to get Miguel into de la Cruz's party.

The reason they had the performance scene is that, without it, they felt that Miguel and Hector's relationship wasn't quite fleshed out enough just yet. They needed a little more time before they parted ways for a while. I do feel like the scene is a little out of place, but I still ADORE it, because it does show Miguel's unfamiliarity with the stage, helps him conquer it for when he needs to later(which would have felt TOO sudden if they'd just played it as is without the contest), and given him a chance to perform with Hector before they're reunited in the final act. The scene is, if anything, slightly rushed, but it does help the story in numerous ways, so it's perfectly fine.

I think it’s a great scene because in retrospect, Miguel didn’t have anyone in his family who knew or encouraged him about music so to have Hector, who was a musician and his actual great great grandfather, do that gave great relationship development. When Hector tells him “I’m proud of you”, Miguel got what he wanted: acceptance from his family.

@@kingsly2275 He said this same thing after he first saw the movie, he is referring to the competition because Miguel wound up not winning that contest anyway. However, people have argued that it does play a lot into the story mainly because Miguel had to play confidently at the party in order to get attention on himself and it would be unbelievable for him to play for the first time and not be nervous. Thus, they have him perform for the first time in a contest where he has someone to help get over his fears. I would argue that it's also character driven, allowing Miguel and Hector to further bond in their love of music.
@Kamechan98
@Kamechan98 5 жыл бұрын
Corey K I think that scene is more about setting time aside for Miguel and Hector to bond over something. Like, up until that scene they don’t really like each other that much and only do what they do in order to get what they want, in fact Hector even says in an earlier scene that he doesn’t like musicians and seem to think poorly of them (probably out of guilt and self-hatred for his own actions). And then it’s revealed a few scenes later that he was a musician himself, despite having given up at some time ago (for reasons obvious and if you’ve seen the movie which I won’t spoil in case you haven’t yet). So it gives them both something to bond over and Hector even teaches Miguel how to perform (the grito, how to grab the audience’s attention etc.) So it makes the ‘lie-revealed moment’ a bit more effective since we just saw them really get along. Plus, it’s the first time that someone tells Miguel that they like his music and are proud of him. Which, again, makes it hurt even more when Hector goes ahead and calls his dreams ‘a stupid musical fantasy’. So it’s not really about the contest or the music in my opinion, it’s more about the characters bonding and setting up more emotional investment between said characters and the audience.

The point of the performance scene is that it's the first time the audience (and Hector) gets to see that Miguel is *actually* a good musician. The movie has kept pulling the rug out from Miguel whenever he attempts to play up to this point, so the viewer needs to see him shine before he gets to Ernesto so we know he's actually got the talent.

What differs Book of Life from Coco is actualy a hefty load of themes. Book of life is more like a fairy-tale, emphasized by the characters being puppets, and the whole story is told (with an arrator, to booth) like a tale. Not only that, the characters are adult, there is a love triangle (which surpisingly works very well), the main character is the focus of two gods betting their realms on it (and they are the most delightful couple of the movie) and the main character's affinity with music is much less important than in Coco. Not to mention the family. In Coco music is forbidden due a family-old trauma, in Book of Life the father simply disregards ANYTHING but bullfighting as non-important and considers mariachis a bunch of buffoons. Now Coco is more of an emotional story, where music drives the whole thing, the family is almost single-minded about music while in Book of Life, ironicaly they all had their dreams crushed because of bullfighting. Comparing the two is like comparing two parts of Day of the Dead. Book of Life is the loud parade on the streets where everybody laughs, make noise and live the moment, Coco is the moment the party is going towards your family, the moment of quietness, where you enjoy the company of each other and honour your relatives from bygone days.

Yeah I have said this many times before, The book of life represents a farytale something that can be told in many contexts just utilizing the day of the dead as said context which is not wrong and still makes for a great movie with amazing animation and character designs, on the other hand Coco built its story around the deeper meaning of the holiday

Anthony Clay The longer you think about it, the worse it gets. Coco was living all her life not knowing why her father left. This reminded me of my beloved grandma who‘s father died in WW2 when she was 6. he was in the marine and the one time she didn’t say goodbye to him, he didn’t come back. She led a happy life but she always had trouble with saying goodbye to people. Such a trauma affects kids and mothers with a trauma affect their kids etc. So I do understand in a way why the tragic fate of the great grandfather shaped the whole family.

The "parents despise their child's wanted profession" trope is so prominent, because a lot of artists in the industry go through this. "Art, animation, screenwriting is not a viable career choice for my kid. I'd rather they'd be a doctor and never follow their dreams." That's the mindset of a lot of parents. That is why that trope is constantly repeated. It's a real thing that happens.

The Book of Life was not similar to Coco. They share a theme based on Día de Los Muertos but the plots and experiences of the characters are completely different. I said this about 100 times when Coco first came out and everyone thought it would be a rip-off of The Book of Life.

Did anyone else cry/get teary eyed when Hector was about to fade away? I mean I actually shouted "OH COME ON PIXAR!" when Imelda placed the petal on Miguel cause like....We were ALL wondering for a brief moment "what if Miguel was too late to save his grandfather?". The writing in this movie was SO good.

I've cried in a few movies before, but when I tell you I LOST it during this movie... I'm Hispanic and though my family wasn't as entrenched in this culture (and our families don't celebrate day of the dead) I still related to so much. Including Coco, since my grandmother is currently battling dementia and Alzheimer's. So during "that" part... idk if I've produced that many tears since I was an infant.

Coco is a masterpiece, it could have easily been a forgettable movie with a plot that is done a million times, but what makes it stand out is the characters which are very likable and the stunning setting for the movie. One thing I really liked it how the meaning of the song “Remember Me” drastically changes as we watch the movie from being a boastful song to stroke the his overinflated ego to it really being a song a father wrote to tell his daughter how much he loved her. I also agree that this is the surprise villain plot done right because it is really an important part of the plot line and had to be there to move it along. I also enjoyed The Book of Life too, I felt that there were enough differences to make both movies enjoyable and Dia De Los Muertos is definitely a holiday that I would like to see get more recognition because it is actually quite interesting. Coco is definitely a movie I want to watch over and over again.

5:15 yeah it's the day, I always get pissed when people compare "coco" with "book of life" some saying "book of life" ripped of "coco" seeing that it started production before "book of life" or that "coco" ripped off "book of life" because it came first. IT'S NEITHER!!!! THAT IS THE ARTISTIC STYLE OF THE DAY!!!!! it's really no different from seeing a chrismas movie or a halloween movie, music is a huge part of "dia de muertos", so is family, and showing the departed as skeletons sometimes with colorful designs. fun fact tim burton confessed in an interview in mexico he took inspiration from "dia de muertos" when he made "the corpse bride".

Never heard of book of life, but the movie did kinda remind me of Kubo and the two Strings. Boy who loves his guitar, stern mother, legendary father/great-great grandfather, somewhat similar villains, VERY similar color palette. But definitely nowhere near a ripoff. Both are extremely good movies in their own regard.

I really REALLY love this movie. Such an absolute ”Day of the Dead” fantasy animated film where a boy must find the one who connects his family and every spectacular orange and colorful imagery makes me want to see it again and it's probably true what Doug said. ”Coco” was an absolute Pixar masterpiece and including giving it at top 5 on my book or thought. The characters were likable, the story is visually stunning, the CG scenes were remarkable, and every scene either emotional and exciting can be enjoyable. I used to the Spanish version because this one is closed more than the English version because I would call this movie a Spanish Feature Genre and it actually works. Whenever you can watch both language versions. The song makes me tear jerker and its remarkable well done and won for an Oscar for best song and winning for the best animated feature. ”Coco” was beautiful made ”Day of the Dead” film. I will say the same thing I've been saying for the last year, Coco is easily one of the best Disney/Pixar movies ever. It's just an instant classic. Good to know that a lot of people from other countries also loved Coco just like here in Mexico (yeah, I'm Mexican) And for the 100th time, It's not a Rip-off! The Book of Life and Coco just have the Day of the Dead as the setup for the plot of the movie. They talk about the same holiday/festivity. Yeah, you could say that Manolo (Book of Life) and Miguel (Coco) passion for music it's the part of the movie that feels the most like rip-off, but I don't think one should criticize both movies because of that.

Its funny that you say your least favorite scene is pointless when its one of the most important scenes in the movie. The scene at Mariachi plaza was there for 3 reasons. 1) to further the plot by having Miguel try and win his way to Ernesto's party. He ends up impressing the band that won and the sneak him into the party. 2) Show that Miguel isn't all talk and can actual play and sing. 3) He gets a chance to perform with the real person (Hector) that inspired his love of music (even if he doesnt realize it yet) and even gets praised by him.

Drawing from and relating to an obscure reference or nostalgic thing is interestingly different for everyone despite being similar things. For example if I hear a song like "I'm a loser" my first thought goes to the band whereas my sister's will go to book of life. A joke might call back to an 80s movie I loved but to everyone else is part of a 90s classic that they don't even realize is in itself a reference to my 80s film. Coco very much masters this concept by showing the different ways people enjoy music. It's beautiful to experience it as an emotional experience but it's also OK to enjoy it as pure entertainment. There is now wrong way to experience the world. Only a deeper way to interpret it.

@@opheliapurple Release dates to be so close? Book of Life came out in 2014. 3 Years isn't close. The movies also have other similarities apart from the Dead of the Dead connection too. Not that I'm accusing one of being a rip off of another since both also have a lot of differences.

@@orionhardy Total production time for a Pixar movie is on average 4-6 years. Coco was being pitched in 2010 according to an interview with the director. My favourite part of this movie is the message. You're going to make sacrifices in your life, so make sure you're making the right ones. This is one of the only Disney movies I can think of where the main character is willing to give up on their dream for something more important. Moana comes close with that song sequence where she stops going down to the ocean, but then a few scenes later she's giving up on her responsibilities as chief's daughter and sailing out like she always wanted to, so I can't give it full credit. But here, Miguel is completely willing to never play music again, just so he can go home to the human world, to be with his family and to make sure that Hector doesn't get forgotten.

The ending of this movie utterly destroyed me. I don’t remember ever crying so hard in a theater ever before as I did near the end of Coco. I was downright bawling my eyes out trying my best to keep my sniffing and snorts at a minimum. Needless to say Coco is a masterpiece. Oh and fun fact: Coco is the #1 box office success of all time in Mexico. So, for what it’s worth, the country that inspired Coco loved the movie so make of that what you will.

The saddest part of this movie for me wasn't anything with Coco, but instead the scene in the ghetto where Hector basically sings a dirge for an old friend as he passes on, forever forgotten. Just the fact that the song the man wants on his deathbed is so dirty and immature screams so much of who he was and what he valued as a person. It's such an intimate, touching moment between two old friends and it's treated with such respect, never tainted by being brought up or foreshadowed beforehand. There's no happy ending to that moment like all the other plotlines, because Chicharrón will never be remembered again. Not in the movie and, a lot of the time I find most people don't even remember him in real life, which is a tragic irony.

I'll throw in my two cents about these two movies. "Coco" and "The Book of Life". Both movies share the same setting and theme. They both take place within Mexico during the day of the dead holiday, The land of the dead is a colorful and grand place, And both movies have a theme of music during the whole story. Now what separates them is them is the characters and plot. Disney's film is mostly about family and ancestors. And the Gutierrez film is about a love triangle and meddling gods. regardless if you think one is a rip off of the other, Both movies are wonderful films to sit down and watch!

"Coco" sort of reminds me of Kevin Gilbert. An artist in his own right who wrote a handful of songs for Sheryl Crow, Sheryl Stole full credit for his music, he abandons her for this while heading back home, and ends up dead a couple years later just as Sheryl went mainstream. BONUS: Kevin Gilbert had a popular song that was later tributed by 7 other artists called "Remember My Name".

2:13 "...trying to find Hector's great-great-grandfather..." Did he mean Miguel? -- Also, for the only scene you thought was pointless... there was a bit of a point to it: Miguel needed to find a way to perform in front of a crowd, showing he can be a great musician, and if they like him, he would go to perform along with Ernesto De La Cruz. They clearly liked him, but because the family was in the distance looking for him, he ran off and didn't get the chance to get his invitation. Sure, that may all seem pointless, but it introduced a fun song, showed a close happy connection between Miguel and Hector, showed off more of Miguel's musical skills, combating his fear of crowds (which is a small fear he had), and subtle hints at how Miguel's dog, Dante, was content with Hector and Miguel being together. Not to mention it introduced me to my most favorite song in the movie "Poco Loco", which was played almost every day on Mexican radio stations. -- And as for whether or not it ripped off "Book of Life"... no, it didn't. Both films were probably in production around the same time, and one so happened to come out about a year or two earlier, but that doesn't mean one ripped-off the other. They just have similar designs and themes that most Mexicans identify with. Not to mention both films are based around the concept of the land of the dead as interpreted by Mexicans, so of course their designs of the land of the dead are similar.

There's so much you can do when you do a holiday that pertain to a certain people/culture which is why some elements of book of life and coco seem similar. Musician wise, I may sound like a stereotypical Mexican, but both my grandpas were musicians and oddly skipped a generation, but I tried to be a musician. Coco reminded me of my great aunt bc looked similar to her. She passed away at the age of 111. The rest of the family in the afterlife reminded me other other distant relatives, some who passed on so I cried. Though my inheritance wasn't money, it was old pics that go back to my great great grandparents. Luckily, we live in the technology age so I scanned, cleaned up and digitally shared them and family members, some I haven't been in contact in a long time, were surprised that these pics existed.

If I can, the scene you don't think connects the best, I took from it a bit of foreshadowing. Just because Miguel's father said "Your family will guide you", and by following Hector's advice and learning from him, he was indeed advancing on his goal. This is a big strive from trying to learn and follow Ernesto's advice which set this whole problem into motion
