@@zanagi As with every other tool I've studied so far, I'd say the first week is the hardest. Everything goes wrong and you have no idea why. But as time passes, you start to get used to it until you finally become familiar with the framework the tool you are learning uses. As any good professional (like Hugo) will tell you, the more you code, the more you learn! I believe this goes with everything in life, actually.

As long as you keep making this incredible content free and available to all, then I will continue to financially support your work (whenever I can afford to) like I did by buying the C# course to help reach the goal so you could put it on KZfaq for all to benefit from.

Udemy has a bunch of rules, one of them being the course cannot have a free version longer than 2 hours. I plan to make the first 10 hours of this course free, so I can't do that on Udemy. @@CodeMonkeyUnity I have another question, instead of sprites I'd like to use static meshes, and to animate the characters I just hide and unhide the meshes in sequence. I made a video about this some time ago kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aJeEnqeot6qmh58.html Would be easy to do this with DOTS? If this is not efficient, an alternative would be to spawn cubes on certain coordinates as if characters were made with voxels, what do you think?

@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 20 күн бұрын
Yup sadly right now there is no built-in Animation support. In the course I will be creating a custom animation system from scratch based on changing meshes quickly. If you want something more normal like Skinned Meshes then the best option right now is using a 3rd party asset, there's a few that seem to work very well. Or of course you have the third option, use DOTS for all the logic and Game Object Animator for the visual, that also works.

hey @CodeMonkeyUnity great video once again. I am very interesting in this course. I have a question. Does it make sense to use Dots for let's say, a chess game? I am asking because the chess game is a turn based game, but dots seems to run in every frame right? Or in this case for a chess game, you would only use the job system to do any calculations for AI for example? Thank you for the great work!
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 19 күн бұрын
DOTS systems have an OnUpdate which runs just like a MonoBehaviour Update, so you could definitely use it in a turn based manner the same way But you could definitely build that Chess game mostly with game objects and then use DOTS just for the AI calculations, I think that would be a great plan

Mr Code Monkley! Most don't care but I randomly comment here, I remember you mentioning you hated writing music, which is something I love doing. After uploading my work here, I have realized I am good at what I do, and should probably aim to do my music, as KZfaq actually allows it, and doesn't hate on my dreams. You and your teachings still helped me as a music producer, the work ethic instilled from the videos is prepping one for managing their own content all around, and management skills are hard to train. Seems like a really great course but I am not sure if DOTS seems that great for me. Sure, it enables you to make some really complex games, but it also seems to add a lot complexity to the game development process. It would be great if there were two versions of this course, one with a traditional work process and one with DOTS. Although I understand that this is probably not realistic, as it would mean a lot of work for you. Anyway, thanks for making the course! I am sure it will be very helpful to many people
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 20 күн бұрын
It actually doesn't add that much complexity after you learn how DOTS works. Thanks to the baking system it is actually quite straightforward. For example the lecture on adding Melee Attack is one of the shortest ones just because by that point we've already learned everything needed to implement a mechanic like that. Building a Component and a System to run some logic is actually quite straightforward after you know how it works. heh yup doing 2 complete courses, one DOTS and one non-DOTS would be a great comparison project, but that is indeed an insane amount of work.

@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 19 күн бұрын
I'm using normal Unity UI, not UI Toolkit, I'm not a big fan of that for runtime UI although I love it for editor tools. The companion project for my C# course was all made in UI Toolkit and I loved working with it. The course is mainly focused on making the game and not editor tooling, but it should be pretty easy to take the DOTS knowledge inside the course and apply it to some editor tools. Although I haven't looked into that specific topic, not sure if there are any special requirements for spawning entities in the Editor World but I'm guessing it's not too complicated.

There's a multiplayer package specific for DOTS, it's Netcode for Entities. So if your objects are mainly Entities that's the one you would use. If you're mainly using Game Objects then you would use NGO Netcode for GameObjects. They are 2 completely separate networking stacks. But remember how you dont have to go full 100% one or the other. You can definitely make a game with Game Objects and use NGO for networking and use DOTS for some background calculations. DOTS is especially great for performance (or tons of objects), so if your game has any performance bottlenecks then it can be a great tool.

When I code I just go for Entities off the bat. I just attach GO related stuff onto components. And then if needed separating a system into two systems one to do logic on a thread and a second to apply it onto the GO

That's an interesting approach!

@@CodeMonkeyUnity It's kind how I used to make games back in the day. We would create managers to interact with the data for each object instead of having each object running its own logic. So with this reasoning you can use all the goodies that ship with unity. Nav mesh... Character controllers, animators...ect. while still getting the advantages of DOTs itself. Stress testing low poly zombies and soldiers with mono behaviors I was getting around 1200 units running over 60 fps with heavy performance refactoring. With the ECS as components I'm stress testing 15k units. I'm sure if I wrote my own navigation and avoidance instead of nav mesh I could increase that further.

EDIT: THIS IS SORTED NOW AND I'VE BEEN ABLE TO BUY THE COURSE I was going to buy the course but teachable doesn't accept my stored credentials and I've not received a password reset email (checked my inbox, spam, etc). This is despite me signing up for your email list on the 9th June and having an email confirming that from teachable. I don't want to put anyone off, I'm sure it's a great course. Others seem to have bought it without issues. Keep doing great content 🙂
@CodeMonkeyUnity
@CodeMonkeyUnity 17 күн бұрын
The email sign up form I had previously doesn't actually create an account, it just adds the email to a list. So if that's what you did then there's no account with your email just yet, that would be why the reset email never arrives because since it doesn't find an account with that email it never sends it. Try creating a new account, if there's no account with that email it should work

It's on their roadmap so eventually but no one knows when. Although for 2D you can just use a Quad Mesh and it will look just fine, that's what I'm doing in the course for the Selection visual circle and the Health Bar, it's just quads. There's no 2D physics but you can always use the normal 3D physics and just lock it to XY
