In this video I will cover step by step process for replacing the molded lead frame and speed sensor on the 6R80 Ford automatic transmission. My vehicle is a 2013 Ford Expedition EL with 5.4L 3V engine and 6R80 transmission.
I was driving on the highway when the check engine light cam on, and my transmission automatically downshifting to first gear and power save mode and I couldn't drive more than 5 mph.
I read the ECM with a scan tool and discovered that the code was P0720 output shaft speed sensor. on the 6R80 transmission case the output shaft speed sensor is inside the transmission case, connected to the valve body by a molded lead frame.
In order to replace the shift speed sensor I had to open up the transmission and replace the entire molded lead frame.

Great job, hopefully going to tackle this myself as well. One thing I noticed in your video is that it looks like one of your transfer tubes is missing when compared to Makuloco. Maybe it fell out during the job. If it is working fine, then probably not a big deal, just wanted to let you know.

Awesome video! Thank you for sharing. The job seems pretty easy really after watching your video just a little time consuming. Did you happen to look at your old speed sensor and see if it had any metal that had built up on the sensor?
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! It did take a lot of time, but the process was very straightforward. My old speed sensor looked fine from the outside, no metal shavings, everything inside the transmission looked perfect. Ford actually would have replaced it for free because there was a technical service bulletin for those speed sensors failing intermittently. However, I had already cleared the code so they said I'd have to wait to bring it in until it failed again and I said no thanks, I'll just fix it myself.

Yessir, I haven't had any problems since I changed it out! You should save at least $3000 by doing it yourself! Just take it nice and slow, take lots of pictures, and make sure you have the pump for the transmission fluid 😄

The part is considered recall by Ford. But when confirming with service they say it has no recall. And then the parts guy said I was lucky to get one and it was on back order. Also they did mention the same that it would take weeks to get one through the service department. Something fishy going on

@DIY_or_DIE, did the problem resolve itself after you successfully replaced and reinstalled the parts? I have a 2012 Ford F150 Lariat 5.0 with this same exact Transmission and problem, and I'm seeing if you think it's worth it to bring it to ford to replace, if they warranty it, or if I should just do it myself. Seems straightforward enough, and you made the process seem extremely simple. But then again, you seem very adept at doing these types of things yourself. Watched the entire video, and it wasn't even a follow-along. I was just genuinely interested in what you were doing, and you made it all very informative and interesting. I feel like i CAN do it myself after watching you. I'm just not sure if i should, you know? Lol. I've replaced a lot on my truck myself at this point, and know that it can ALWAYS look easier than it seems. Any insight on the process is much appreciated. Excellent video, and great camera-work for being in such a tight area!

P.S. Sorry for such a long-winded and scatterbrained comment/question. My ADHD gets the best of me sometimes. Lol. I know you're a DIY Mechanic channel on KZfaq and aren't "qualified" to be giving advice like this. But I honestly felt like THAT, in itself, was the exact reason I wouldn't mind taking advice from you.. Because though I have SOME technical knowledge on mechanical work, I'm by no means certified. Just trying to see if you think the benefit of doing myself outweighs what YOU THINK could go wrong during the process.. idk if I am wording that correctly or asking the correct question. Again, sorry, ADHD... 😂😂

Hey there, thanks for watching and for sharing your very kind feedback 😄 I have not had any issues since completing this repair. Transmission works and shifts very smoothly. If you wish to have the dealer replace it, you will need to have an active trouble code. Do not clear the code. You will also need to meet their extended warranty requirement of less than 100k miles or 10 years. You should have no problem doing this job yourself as long as you are clean, meticulous, familiar with basic mechanic tools, dont mind getting covered in greas and transmission fluid, and don't mind putting as much time as it takes to complete the repair. Most important things: ensure you order the correct speed sensor replacement module, ensure you do not get contaminants inside your transmission, put everything back in the right spot, use proper torque procedure, and make sure you fill it back up with the correct type and amount of transmission fluid. Also, check out Fordtechmakuloco and watch his video as well because he is the best Ford mechanic on the internet 😆 Good luck!

This looks like a difficult repair. Did you get a quote from an auto shop? Wondering what they'd charge for labor. And if it was worth the mess and time.
@DIY_or_DIE

I'm not sure how much a dealership would charge, but it was definitely worth it because I was able to order all the parts and get it fixed within a week instead of waiting a month for the dealership to get to it...

I have a 2013 F150 Ecoboost throwing code P0720. Autozone sells the Output Shaft Speed sensor for $63. Will I be fine JUST replacing the sensor, or would I have to replace the entire Molded Leadframe like you did?
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 4 ай бұрын
On mine the sensor was built into the molded lead frame and could not be replaced by itself. Do some more research on your make and model and verify if the sensor is part of the molded lead frame or not.
@jmendozas197
@jmendozas197 4 ай бұрын
@@DIY_or_DIE It turns out mine is the same way. I ended up buying the entire molded leadframe, along with the recommended grommets. Apparently, auto parts stores don’t know what they’re doing, hence, why they sell the sensor by itself, when, in reality, it’s built INTO the molded leadframe lol.

I have a problem, my transmission shifts very quickly and the speedometer does not match the speed. It is very advanced and the shifts are very bad. Could it be that sensor? It doesn't give me any code, I replaced the transmission and it does the same.

I did not, I reused the gasket since it was in good condition. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to buy one just in case and return it if you don't need it. That way you don't end up waiting on a part to come in if you do need to replace it.

How exactly were you able to obtain a new lead frame so quickly if the dealership claimed they were up to 3+ weeks on back order? My wife’s 2017 f150 is throwing a P0722 and I’m willing to bet this is our issue.
