This band... I still have my cassette tape of this album bought in 1990. Saw them in Buffalo, NY in 1993 and in Seattle 2012. I think Codeine were way ahead of their time, the music still sounds fresh and has a timeless quality to it. Frigid Stars is the greatest gorgeous dirge of doom and love's consequences, and a statement on the heaviness of the human condition.

agree. arrived late to see the reunion tour in 2012 from three hours away because of cops closing off the freeway after my erstwhile band played a show at a doomed venue with a dickhead promoter. says it all, really.

it has extracted the quintessence of all the slow early Stooges and slow heavy early Wire... When i got this album in 1993?1994 tops, it stayed stuck on my turntable until i got the incentive to get off smack and leave my homewtown,,, spent 25 years in london,,, now i'm back in said hometown and on methadone,,, and and these songs have taken an extra heaviness and reality... age does make them even more relevant... hurt

Listening to this at 2x speed. It's basically jangle pop for some of the songs. New Years in particular basically turns into something off of the C86 compilation. Seriously guys, speed it up. It's oddly good that way.

This whole album is like... As if you were stuck in the car that fell through the ice. Cold envelops you, you're about to run out of oxygen, but instead of trying to escape you do nothing. You just sit calmly and dig into your soul staring into nowhere and waiting for death to come.

honestly I agree with this 100%. Oral opiates and kratom can really bring clarity to a lot of situations where it seems like there's no hope or you want a different perspective on how things are. Yes opiates can be addicting but they can also be such a beautiful experience. It's all about how much, why and when. This album is pure emotion

"Frigid Stars" came out in 1990 and "Spiderland" in 1991. However, Slint's first EP, "Tweez", came out in 1989, BEFORE Codeine's first album. This may have led to it being the other way around: Codeine were actually inspired by Slint. In fact, "W." an instrumental from their "Barely Real" EP (later remade with different instrumentation and added vocals, entitled "Wird" and released on their second album, "The White Birch") was actually them trying to write a typical Slint song/writing a tribute song.

Teethgrinder 83 I know how opium can take your time and life. Even though it is worth taking for the undescribable euphoria, I wouldn't do heroin until I would really have nothing else to do in life, like 50's or 60's. You can take heroin whenever you want, but you lose goals and ambitions. Opium simply feels million times better than the greatest feeling of happiness or acomplishment you could imagine. Apart from that, it doesn't harm you long term physically or mentally, it's safe if you don't overdose, it's just simply too perfect. So don't do it.

really like this band and this album. but sometimes the lyrics do bother me... i find them to be very cringeworthy in places "i miss your smile, it´s been a while" repeated painfully often... "i want you to need me - not to feed me" (also repeatedly) keeping it simple is definitely no excuse for the mediocre lyrics they deliver on some songs.

doesn't matter if they are not poetically put. the point of codeine isn't to be poetic. Those lyrics relate to feelings which i have and the singer probably has which carry emotional weight, that justifies it imo. a beautifully worded verse may not make me feel as much as codeine lyrics. the thing is, he means what he says whole heatedly. When he says something he means it.
