I think gutting dark angels was a big brain strat by GW to stop everyone from wanting to buy it so it doesn't sell out instantly.

I played a game yesterday with my buddy and my lovely squad of 10 knights were putting in some work and destroying tanks in one combat round. I'll let that be how I remember DW knights as they leave my list

Nerfing the Vengeance is the one that hurts me the most. My Ravenwing weren’t even that good and now they’re even worse, don’t even want to touch my DA’s atm.

Thank you kindly for this in-depth video review. As a DA player, I'm extremely disappointed overall. I'm just gutted with the nerfs, especially to Lion and the Knights. Damn, I only managed to get a Lion miniature 2 weeks ago; I'm not even finished painting him and now I don't even feel like it. I didn't bother trying to order a DW Assault box today either; my enthusiasm for this entire release is gone. On the positive side, I have managed to save a lot of money 😉!

I've been playing dark angels since the 90s and it's basically a tradition we get robbed. I seemed to have missed the timeframe like 3-4 years ago when DA were strong, so back to status quo for me

I'm massively dissapointed in the nerfs and the lack of a Plasma weapon boost, it seemed like one of the iconinc things we lost in the index simplification that I was really hoping we would get back.

Its genuinely baffling how gw can look at a already struggling army and say yes, they do need to loose units, abilities and damage. Buff? What is a buff? They are super soldiers, they are already buff enough

Why does it seem like the rules teams not aware of what each other are writing? Why does it seem, with things like Azrael not being able to join the Company of Heroes, that the Dark Angels Codex team had no idea what the Space Marine Codex Team was working on, or what Space Marine Detachments they might have to compete with? Also, why does it seem like the players have far more awareness about how the game is played and what the breakpoints for damage or to-hit/to-wound rolls are than the people who should be the experts on how the game is played, given that they come up with all the rules?

Time to start picking up cheap models that people will be rage selling lol

I got to be honest, based on how GW has treated Dark Angels in the past, I was assuming that they were going to be one of the strongest Marine armies in the game. Instead we got this, which was... Death Guard player here, I was almost convinced to play DA thanks to the Knights. Now? 6 Deathshroud Terminators are cheaper than 5 Deathwing knights.

Warhammer once again proves that it is foolish to care. This game markets itself as something to get emotionally invested in, and proud of. To really care. To love your little dudes and paint them well and make up little stories and get invested. But, AGAIN, the fans are left holding their lovingly painted little dudes with their little backstories, with their jaws on the floor as they are told that those little dudes are no longer welcome on the table. The ones that are welcome are worth nothing and are no longer fun. "I guess all this was for nothing" is the feeling. Over and over again. We're all left just feeling foolish for having been so invested in something so one-sided and fleeting. We're all left feeling foolish for having cared.

I know I haven’t been around long but I don’t understand how they can justify these nerfs from the general state of DA on the table. Loosing TALON MASTER is huge for my army, I had three! And STRIKEMASTER made a term squad useful, particularly knights. And the nerf to plasma is a very hard hit. Seems GW are trying to remove the capability for one turn kill unit thing??!! I expect Dark Angels will drop down the competitive percentage lists considerably!

I am getting back into WH40k after short a hiatus since 2nd ed. Started building a Dark Angels army before all this hype. I now regret my Deathwing Assult pre-order and am being reminded of all the reasons I left the game. I think I'll just dig out my new, unused, 3rd ed. rule book, look at One Page Rules, and finally build that Band of Brothers box set...

The Ravenwing strat to force battleshock could be used to prevent the unit being targeted for a “Return to reserves” strat on your turn. Situational at best, but the more often those strats pop up, the more situations there will be.

It seems in in true dark angels fashion they’ve redacted half of their iconic units and hidden all the good wargear away in secret vaults… Also can someone please take the crack pipe away from the rules writers

They should have make one unit battleline for every detachment, like infernus for firestorm, something phobos for vanguard, etc

A command squad with a strikemaster is the cornerstone of my army lists for all of the edition so far. Absolute atrocity this codex. Took a middling army and kicked them in the dick.

Almost all the special units for the Dark Angels are underpowered, even if they drop in points. > Would you take a squad of Deathwing Knights or Assault Terminators? > Would you take a squad of Companions or Blade Guard? > Would you take Belial or a Terminator Captain? > Would you take Asmodeus or a regular Chaplin?

an interesting thing to note is that RWBKs give their anti monster/vehicle stuff to the character leading them, which is very big for sammael and a little bit worse but still very good for ravenwing champion

…so I think GW might have overcorrected when they saw people complaining about OP 9e Codexes, lol.

I’m still gonna play my DA how I have been since the IronStorm detachment came out. Dark shroud and tank blocks with tech marines In the middle for lethal hits and dmg negating. Until they nerf that detachment I won’t feel the pain of my knights being dirted. 😂 I will say the command squad loss and strike master is HUGE! Being able to bring a whole term back every turn has saved me many times.

At least my 30k Dark Angels are still good.

People really need to start being more vocal about the awful handling of chapter specific space marines & the space marines in general whether it be models rules or lore it’s just absolutely horrible as of late it’s almost as if all the interns are working on all the sm stuff and all the vets are working on all the other factions

Can someone explain how oath is a 33% damage increase? Because on a 3+ you have a 33% chance of missing, but if you reroll that miss you still have a 1/3 chance of missing again, so it would only give you a 22% damage increase overall

I switched to DA for tenth, as I only came back to 40k after a near 30 year hiatus, coming in at the end of 9th edition. I played IG (Krieg), bought my codex, and boom: 10th edition gets dropped. They gut my Krieg, so I'm like, hell, I played DA in 2nd/3rd edition. Luv me greenie bois. And they probably won't be the obnoxious meta anymore...good time to switch! Right? Right? (All the feels bads.)

I wish they’d have done a “core army stratagems” where each army gets a few (2-4) stratagems they always have access to so we don’t just get -1 strat for each marine army as an example because they all have AoC

If this was GW's attempt at combatting codex creep then it's a horrible execution. Reasons being that they did nothing to communicate this and would rather let their community doompost and and take the bad PR. I see no real benefits to keeping quiet about an approach which would most definitely hurt model sales since they've periodacally raised the prices; despite constantly advertising the edition to be more accessible to others. It's your core audience that keeps you afloat, especially in a niche hobby like this. By doing this you risk alienating whoever is left in your core audience and those who come into the hobby will hear about this debacle and the impression they get is "well if the company seems to make radical changes without prepping the community and staying silent with any and all criticism (sometimes outright censoring in the form of removing the ability to comment on their media) then I'm not going to spend the money to invest into this hobby." The reason some companies like Nintendo can get away with this mentality is because they are already well established and know their core audience: children and nostalgia fueled adults, therefore they don't have to try as hard. While I understand the mentality of "Rules are temporary, cool models are forever" it however doesn't soften the blow for those who would like to run cool models but never get to use them because other cool looking models with the same or similar roles outshine them. Granted, that is not always enough to stop some people but the point is this is a game that has a swathe of units/models for each army and if those units/models don't perform well to the person then there's no reason to run them even with the rule of cool. Another point is that considering GW's track record of leaving units/armies in horrible states for months, sometimes years, (looking at you Dark Eldar 9th Ed, as well as Admech 9th to now) it's fair to say that your brand of plastic soldiers (which you paid and INVESTED upwards of $500+) will leave you disheartened and to the extreme really frustrated. Especially knowing that these rules will stick for longer than they need to given basic pattern recognition in GW's behavior. While GW has recently been better about hot-fixing digital rules in a more "immediate" manner, this is an entire codex that needs most rules outright rewritten and not just points adjustments to band-aid the problem. You only get one shot to write and print this style of codex given how long it takes and so far it's been a horrible miss almost across the board no matter where you look in forums and in the overall community. There's absolutely no way GW will reprint and rewrite something on this scale, it's more cost effective to wait an entire edition. That's why most people are having this knee-jerk reaction and doom-posting despite having some exaggeration. People are rightfully frustrated at their favorite brand of toy soldiers being further pounted into the ground despite a pre-existing 45% win rate (which is competitively measured by those who play at a higher level, so imagine how the games go casually). People want to play cool models with decent rules that make playing the game fun rather than taking loss after loss because the rules didn't allow them to enjoy it. No matter what mentality you have, losing constantly is not fun. Sure, you learn with losses but at some point enough is enough. No matter who you are you want to win a game, casually or not, it's self-validation that you performed well using cool models with interesting and decent rules that allowed you to make those tactical plays and win. I don't know. It's a shame that 10th is seemingly following this pattern or homogenizing factions and removing flavor while lazily turning in homework and expecting people to buy into an already overpriced hobby. A game should feel rewarding and enjoyable to play rather than fight you because the rules writers are incompetent. Edit: Spelling

In closing i will try out the terminator stuff to see if i can get it to work and deathwing nights won’t make the list… generic ass captain and chaplain will and maybe some dreadnoughts… cause i would like some decent shooting somewhere…

Think that Ravenwing has potential, but the stupid nerfs to the other wings (and deleting the units) have it seems weakened the faction quite a lot

If Battleshock gets more usefull (Chaos Knights and Nids use it quite often) this new detachement could work as a counter to stop it from beeing used to focussed because it would not work well vs DA

As a DA player i am crying.....

The DW Terminators didn't get nerfed, they got nuked. In exchange for a 15 point penalty relative to bog standard terminators, they get a one time use Feel No Pain, and ignore modifications to Hit Rolls. They technically also get a plasma cannon, but at 1d3 attacks, it does nothing. On average, you get 1.5 attacks which hit on 3+, which means on average 1 hit. Standard wounds on 3+ on basic Intercessors, or you can risk blowing up your plasma cannon to drop that to a 2+. And for your trouble, you can, if they don't make the save, kill one basic Intercessor. But only if you overcharge. The Plasma Cannon may as well be a wet sponge for as much damage as it will actually do.

Worst part of the codex that I've seen so far from snippets: it doesn't seem to document the first meeting between The Lion and his chapter in any depth, just having two pages roughly covering their relationship with no dialogue at all. Hope a book covers it...

Question for the group can I use with the ravening rule where any unit can shoot after advancement on a servo turret? Am I able to make a blitzkrieg style army with this ridicules unit make a advance move then fire at will with lol.

I just got the lion. Spent 60 bucks just for him to get nerfed a week later. He's not even painted yet.

The Deathwing taskforce is in my opinion better than the 1st company taskforce but as you had mentioned the potential is completely redundant when the points do not equal to the rules.

Reading through the codex supplement now I have it, can the deathwing terminator sergeant not swap out his power weapon? Printed copy says he's equipped with storm bolter and power weapon, with no swap options?

Now that the Ravenwing Command Squad needs to lead Black Knights instead of adding them to the squad, can you still attach a Chaplain on Bike?

Why is Lazarus still unable to lead company heroes? He is a company named captain, so if you own the champion model for any reason it is unusable. Yet another unit we lose.

Stupid question: I've gotten myself the Deathwing Assault box in German. I can't find any paragraph about dreadnoughts getting the deathwing keyword. Did it get axed? Am I blind? Or did the translation fail?

I'm starting to wonder if GW are trying to tune down armies across the board. Considering all of the codexes released thus far have been, to my understanding, mostly lukewarm (especially the Mechanicus and now seemingly the Dark Angels). Yes, they bad, but in a post 10th edition Codex world it might even out eventually? I guess we'll have to wait and see how the codexes for the power factions like Aeldari end up looking when we get there.

There is so much suck in these rules right now… seriously i think maybe running gladius with Azreal and generic gravis characters is probably the strongest way to play then and that’s not good enough… if they are going to make terminators good again that would be a thing but right now they aren’t killy enough to justify their points cost… oh they should just goven back the deathwing stuff an innate armour of contempt thing… i’m literally gutted that my ultra smufs list would probably smash any of the terminators which is depressing…

Inner circle companions have to have some of the worst rules for a melee unit (and a stupid name). Either make them 5-10 man units or give them ap -3 and ap -2 on sweep.

Just watched a game, 5 Knights charged a predator, had plus 1 to wound and full Rerolls with the stratagem and couldn't even kill it ... They rolled average. Crazy how pillowfisted they are now...

As the paint scheme doesn't matter anymore, surely any Chapter can use their Detachments, as long as you don't use any units that are specific to other Chapters?🤷

Can you at least make your own chapter master now (for successors)? I’m the past the DA, including successors always only had Azrael because of lore reasons.

This is pretty well one of the worst codexs Dark Angels have gotten. They nerfed quite alot of units and new units are not very good, unlikely reducing points will make the army good.
