Wranglerstar PROhO Merch - wranglerstarmerch.com
In this eye-opening episode, join me, Cody, aka Wranglerstar, as I face the music and own up to a massive blunder in my recent project - the Birch Bark Lockers. While constructing these rustic beauties, I made a critical error: installing the piano hinges incorrectly. My eagle-eyed subscribers didn't hesitate to call me out on it, and now, it's time for some serious damage control.
But fear not! Instead of wallowing in defeat, I've decided to turn this setback into an opportunity for innovation. Watch as I brainstorm and implement a brilliant fix to reinforce the locker bench, utilizing the very same piano hinges that caused the initial problem. It's a testament to resilience, problem-solving, and the unwavering support of the Wranglerstar community.
Join me on this journey of redemption as I transform a colossal mistake into a triumph of craftsmanship. Don't miss out on the valuable lessons learned and the satisfaction of seeing a project rise from the ashes. Tune in now and witness Wranglerstar's resilience in action!

When I seen the thumbnail my first thought was a question I was worried about a few days ago. As a master plumber who owns his own business and has been doing it for 22 years, I was wondering why there was no plumbing in the slab for the cozy cabin project. Still one of my thoughts when I see you upload. No plumbing in the cabin doesn't make sense bc I seen you ran water for it. Maybe you didn't film it or maybe I missed it but it has worried me since the last cabin video. Hope all is well, enjoy your videos. From an East Tennessee Farmer- I wish the best for everything.

For the finish on something like that it should be kept real light colored so maybe just a clear poly. If you stain it or use an oil finish of some sort it will darken a bit and that will make each area darker. Ideally just want it very waterproof and bright.

for added strength for supporting more weight, you can put a vertical support under the back of each of those styles, transferring the weight to the floor, rather than to the glue and pin-nails.

Thinking this would work really well in a race trailer as well. If you like the raw look of the birch plywood, satin water based polyurethane would be a good choice. Recommend thinning the last coat 50/50 with water for an even finish. I’ve also had really good results spraying it thinned out (HVLP).

Izzy Swan finish is my go to. By volume - 30% spar urethane and 70% teak oil, let it sit for 15 minutes and wipe off extra. It darkens the wood a little bit, but is long lasting and pretty tough. It penetrates into to the wood and is very durable.

I grew up in a house where a elementary school principal added an addition. Unknown to us until a fatefully cold Thanksgiving, he framed the fireplace box with lumber which was faced with bricks. After several hours of a roaring fire, smoke started pouring out around the mantle. My Dad bashed holes in the fireplace with a sledgehammer while I was in charge of spraying water in the holes. 😂

Looks good, very satisfying wood working in a cabinetry form. As far as the finish goes, I would stay away from any polyurethane, 2 in one type stains. Going the wipe on stain, then lacquer coat is a lot of work. I think I would get a HVLP sprayer and just do a lacquer coat, sand with 320 grit, then a second coat, and call it done.

I concur with the load bearing observations. I used to make products like this and priority one was always point loading to support human weight; likewise if the purpose was to support significant weight like a large CRT television. I would not rely on end grain screws, even though that would be modestly stronger.

I think your strengthening improvement there is a very good choice, that will hold up well. I can see people standing on those seats to look up on the top shelf if they are not as tall as you are and with your new addition they will be able to do this. I do think though that you need more ventilation in the cubbies than what you have. Very little air will get up through that gap due to its location. You need to allow air to pass through all the cubbies and out the other side. So I would have a vent on each end of the unit that passes through from one cubby to the next and out the far side. But that is always something you can add later if you find you need it. Great work and as for the finish I'm undecided on more USFS green or good old fashioned linseed oil. Leaning towards the paint as it will be easier to wipe down when needed.

The layers of ply will split in no time on the end grain. At the mill shop if we wanted to put hinges on ply we would do a glue up with solid wood stock on the end that called for hinges and connect to that. It works well. You can use biscuits, a spline or tongue and groove for more glue up surface area. Your solution with the cleats is perfect. I would have beveled/chamfered the bottom of them that way there wouldn't be a 90 degree angle to catch things. There are two kinds of critics, the one who would never move beyond the fear to do something yet feel compelled to tell others what they've done wrong backed up with no experience. Then there are the critics who have words of wisdom gained by experience whos motivation is lifting others up. Love your channel and content!
