It is time for us to plant our fall winter garden here on the farmstead, and I absolutely love this time of the year on the farm. The fall garden is always my favorite gardening season, because here in growing zone 8, we can grow more types of vegetables in our backyard garden vs the spring summer season. In this year's homestead fall garden, we are growing elephant garlic, collard greens, onions, kohlrabi, lettuce, salad greens, mustards greens, radishes, turnip greens, tatsoi, and broccoli, and also Mrs. Cog Hill helped me plant the fall garden this year, even though gardening is not her thing her on the farm....she rather be on the tractor or dealing with all the farm animals, but that is what makes our family farm work, teamwork and working together as a family!

I'd have to agree. I'm a Minnesota girl transplanted to Missouri who had NEVER had corn bread let alone made it! I know!! Now, after my Missouri-born hubby showed me how, it's flour, corn meal, oil, eggs and into the cast iron pan! That's the only way to make corn bread. Shalom and Blessings!

Please send our regards to MC, Nugget and Peaches.

A good southern cook can grind their own field corn or use a box of cornbread mix. Its because they use enough bacon fat, butter and if you like it sugar to make a rubber tire taste good.

you are giving your "little" Mary the most important things a person can have: a true sense of responsability, you are teaching her to love nature and all its wonderful creatures and respect that which we cannot recreate, she is learning to love to work and the satisfaction of the results that come with hard work, you are an example of love and friendship and most of all, she is learning to learn from her own mistakes, pick up and get at it again. She will be strong, courageous and super well behaved. And that dear family, is NOT something you learn from books or at any school. You are definitely being the BEST SCHOOL she could have!!! Loved this video, and you two working together and laughing and all the comments you both make, really great and fun!!!!

Homeschooling - My daughter started homeschooling a couple of years ago. It was scary at first, but turns out it was the best thing for our grandchild who can be head strong at times. The nice benefit of homeschooling was that our grandchild wasn't bringing home the flu that ended up infecting everyone. It was the first year that I didn't catch the flu. With homeschooling you don't have to worry about someone coming in and shooting your child. We don't have to worry about tornados since we have a tornado shelter (the school doesn't have one yet). When the weather is bad (cold, rain, ice, snow) you are not out on the streets (aka no auto accidents).

Loved that talking to you gave to those hens. Wish I had done that before I planted my Fall Garden because they went in there and ravaged it. I had put plastic over the rows but the wind kept giving them access to the Fod Yah ( Baker Creek Seeds ) so they obligingly ate it to the ground. This morning after letting the geese and chickens ou t I went back in for my morning coffee and about an hour later headed out with the farm dogs to take a turn around the property. To my utter horror and dismay I saw a stripped fig tree that I had planted this Spring. I mean it was a gruesome crime scene. I looked for the culprits and they were hiding out near my neighbors front porch. Who knew geese were this destructive?! From no w on I am going to have atalk with all my flock before releasing them! Great advice and content as always, Cog Hill Family!

I love the videos. I homeschooled my two daughters. We didn't use any curriculum at all. Both have Master degrees now. I've been watching Marycarl and she is more educated than most adults. If she follows her passions she will be fine. She'll be fantastic.

A SOUTHERNER who doesn't make pans of cornbread?!?!? I think I gasped out loud, lolol. That Southern card is definitely in jeopardy. :D

I lost my little almost 17 year old dog on Easter Sunday. Your videos are so good to make me smile and help with the grief and sleepless nights.

I'd like to see what you are able to eat from the garden. It'd be a nice reminder that grocery stores are not the be all for obtaining food.
