I gotta say I have seen tons of the homemade rings made from old silver coins but none of them retained any of the character of the coin. They just looked like plain silver rings. What you make truly is art. And thank you for sharing the process with the world!

When I was in high school, I walked around hammering the edge of a half-dollar with a spoon until it was flattened to almost the proper ring size and then drill the center and filed smooth.

Those are beautiful rings by the way. I'm a big coin guy and I can see the value in what you're doing. Take a Silver dollar that is worth melt only, and turn it into something worth much more. On the other hand, another 100 years from now, somebody is looking at those rings and going, What???? That's worth $5000 now!! Why would they do that!!?? But we'll all be dead by then, so who cares. I'm definitely going to give this a try! Thank you!

makes me cringe when stupid people damage old coins and other historic pices. if you look close at the video you can see this is a 1894 o silver dollar in bad shape thay are worth $50 in the coindishion his was in it was detailed enuff to fetch $100. and the bad part is people have ben told the last 5 years that morgons are getting rare and worth more and more money. now days cus of people like this they are harder and harder to get with the min price on a morgen with a readable date being a common being worth $22 min

vorkev1 These coins are melted everyday, and you would never know. So why not make a recognizable ring out of them? A coin worth melt now worth 3 and 4 times that now. Or a melted morgan that someone is wearing in their bellybutton. I'd rather see where that silver came from.

To the people that are pissed about ruining a Morgan silver dollar. The Morgan's being used are worth melt only. Most of the Morgan's worth melt are being melted down and turned into whatever. It's a fact. So why not make a ring out of it? I would rather see a ring with Morgan identifying marks on it. Otherwise, it's an earing, not really knowing where that silver came from.

+Erik Clarke taking something from your pocket and showcasing it on your finger is destroying history? I think it's a great way to let history be seen and shared. It's still important and a ring will be passed around for years. in my opinion that's just as good as sticking it in a plastic case and hiding it away or melting it down for silver blocks like most people would do.
@richnorman7058
@richnorman7058 8 жыл бұрын
+nrdixie I used to feel the same way about destroying "old" things. I totally agree with your point. Coins like these have so little collector value in common dates or lower grades that many people do just that, melt them down into blocks. I would much rather see them displayed in ways to honor their history as apposed to obliterating them. Actually, most people just assume something this old is incredibly valuable versus what the reality is.

Written almost 3,000 years ago but proverbs 9 is up to date enough to guide against Internet trolls :) 7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. 8 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. 9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

I don't see the harm in reducing the supply of antique coins. It will only increase the value and rarity of other simular coins (as long as the coin isn't the last of its kind). Also this guy is an artisan and an entrepreneur America was forged by people like him.

"Is it illegal to damage or deface coins? Title 18 , Section 331 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States. ... The key word is fraudulently." Source: facebook.com/makingperfectcents/

the coin collector in me is dying right now. I can't believe people destroy silver dollars to make rings. I'm sure theres people out there that will watch this and be like "hey i have one of those coins" and make a ring out of it and they just destroyed a $700 coin.

Well I suppose the people who would do that would also clean it up before taking it to a coin shop to :)

My thoughts exactly. My inner numismatist is weeping that these people are dumb enough to take coins worth hundreds and turn them into mutilated rings worth only their melt value. It's like if you turned Mona Lisa into a table cloth... it just isn't right.
