“It was dirty. Being an infielder, he should know that," Dunston said. "I thought he was trying to hurt me and I've got to look out for my best interests. On a double play I expect that, not on a stolen base. I know a takeout when it's a takeout and a slide when it's a slide.”

100% spot on. Bates tried to say that he was in double play breakup mode. That he didn't realize the bunt didn't get laid down. Didn't fly. Runners always look over their shoulders in those situations to make sure ball didn't get popped up.

I’d have knocked his block off before anyone could get out there. Cheap ass move and I’d forgotten about this brouhaha. Watch Bates’ reaction, he doesn’t get pissed and stick up for himself. @@haterisinguponus2844 that slide might of been legal but me and you both know that was a dirty slide. He literally went out of his way and dived sideways into his legs. Dont act like players didn't do that type of stuff to disrupt plays there have been brawls on more than one occasion because of that. If he would've pulled that off in todays game he would be ejected. You never see players slide like that when there doing a regular everyday slide.

That was a legal play back in those days as the runners first concern was to break up the double play by all means necessary! Not a cheap shot at all! Bates slid hard and tried to clip Dunston’s legs, which is what players are taught back then. You go low and try to clip the infielders legs (with cleats down) and break up the double play! If Dunston thinks he’s in harms way, he better get out of the way and Dunston was late trying to jump over the runner and he got clipped and upended! That’s on Dunston for hanging in there late, he knew what was coming, that’s on Dunston! If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen!

That absolutely was a shitty slide trying to take his legs out. If he didn't jump his knees would have been wrecked.

It’s not a clean slide he’s sliding perpendicular (sideways) to the base why? He should be sliding feet 1st or head 1st “towards” the bag, I don’t understand the sideways slide other than to try to hurt the player taking the throw.

Thank you; great point that's what I was trying to say as well. You said it better. How are other people not seeing this, has no one played or just never had to slide into 2nd. idk

Don Pearson dude if I was covering the bag trying take the throw and some asshole came in like that whew boy I wouldn’t go after him but I would not be happy for sure. I mean guys I understand he’s in the base line but they’re professionals that’s not back yard shenanigan ball these men have careers and tons of money on the line. Alls I’m saying is “was it necessary” not was it legal or whatever. ya it was legal but he could have slid head first to the right of the bag and tried to avoid the tag which is the whole point anyway to advance bases not to go after the player because well “I can so I’m gonna”.

It took me a second to figure out what the heck Bates was doing. I thought he was trying to steal 2B but he was making a slide like he was looking to break up a double play. He thought the batter (who looked like a pitcher hitting) dropped down a bunt. Back then that slide was 100% legit. It was one of the less appreciated plays in MLB: a baserunner getting forced out at second base but sliding ten feet wide of the bag in an effort to break up a play at 1B. I can understand the present rule, where you have to actually touch second base if your making a slide. It definitely makes things safer for the fielder but it just isn't as fun to watch ha ha. Dunston was just being a baby because he knew he was going to lose his full time job as the Cubbies second baseman after the season. Bates wasn't trying to do anything dirty, he was just trying too hard.

Dunston played short, not second.

At first look it appeared that where Dunston took the throw the base runner had to slide that way, but upon second and third looks that was more of a break up double play slide then a straight slide into second base.

Apparently that was Dunstons first time playing baseball,. Bates was safe ( never tagged) and shouldn’t have been ejected.

alitlweird I too am a Cubs fan, but that was a terrible slide. That's the kind of slide you would make to break up a double play. There was no double play, hence no reason for that slide. Plus, those slides can be dangerous. The Mets second baseman had his leg broken back in 2015 because of a shitty slide like that.

looked like the base runner was trying to slide and take out Shawon's legs and maybe try to injure him and that is why he got so upset, didnt look like a real normal slide nto 2nd base, cause he didnt go directly straight on in, he went in pretty much sideways........

Dunston has a point...You can't adjust when your not expecting it, like w/ dp...A similar understood rule is when a cutoff guy fakes a throw to nab the guy going to third...But the runner slides(and possibly injures himself...) trying to beat the ball & tag that never was... (Happened to Bryce Harper...)

I think the slide was fair. I don't think he looked to see where the ball was. I think he thought it might have been hit. Granted he should have looked to see if it was a pop up, but I think he thought maybe it was fielded and they were going for the double play. I think Dunston was out of line.

Why did Bates get ejected? I just don't understand why I keep seeing all these middle infielders getting upset that people are sliding hard into you? If you don't like that, maybe you are playing the wrong position.

He had a cannon for an arm, but he was wild as hell. He made a ton of throwing errors and would have had triple the amount if he wasn't lucky enough to have had one of all time great defensive first basemen bailing him out.

+Jeff Haight Yeah not so much. He was a lifetime .269 hitter with 150 home runs and almost 700 RBI. The list of short stops that have those kind of numbers before PEDs became a thing in baseball is very short.
