It's sad that John Waters is known primarily as a filmmaker but he's said that the reason he doesn't make movies anymore is that no one will give him the money to do it. So he just appears on talk shows, like Orson Welles did in his later years.

'I'm leaving the country' "Go ahead, no one cares" 😂
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 7 жыл бұрын
Of course, by that logic you should stick with your cable provider / phone company / etc. regardless of what they do, because "no one cares" about a single client leaving. But I'm pretty sure people who decide to leave the country don't expect their (individual) absence to make a difference to _everyone else_. It's more about making a difference to _themselves_. And, if _enough_ people leave (just like if enough people switch to a different company), then it might have some broader influence.

@timhulsizer
@timhulsizer 7 жыл бұрын
RFC3514, leaving the country in the hopes that your absence will be noticed and will create change is a terrible plan. Staying and getting involved is the only way real change will happen.
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 7 жыл бұрын
Channel T - Did you read what I wrote? No one leaves "in the hopes that your absence will be noticed" - just like your cable company doesn't care if a single client leaves. That's false logic. People leave so _they_ notice the change in _their_ lives (and also because they prefer to contribute to a society or company that better reflects their values). This notion that people need to stay in the country where they were born forever is kind of medieval. The USA was founded by people who chose to _not_ stay in their country of birth. And that was in a time when travel was much harder than now. It's perfectly normal for someone who doesn't like the current climate in the USA to move somewhere else. Not only can that be an immediate improvement in their lives, but they might also prefer to see their taxes go to a social / political project that they agree with. Anyway, "real change" is _already_ happening; half the voters picked Trump, and their opinion is worth as much as the opinion of the ones that didn't. Sure, if you want (or _have to_ stay), get involved and try to change things, but there's nothing wrong with moving somewhere else - history is full of people who did just that, and achieved a lot more than they would have if they'd stayed in the same place for their entire lives. Do you also think that, if you're not happy with Comcast, you should stay a Comcast client and "get involved so real change will happen"? Especially if 50% of Comcast's clients were pulling in the opposite direction?
@timhulsizer
@timhulsizer 7 жыл бұрын
I was referring to the part where you said, "if enough people leave [...] then it might have some broader influence." But I understand your point better now, thanks for clarifying.

What about slavery, genocide of the native people, Jim crow, Vietnam, Iraq, our country is comfortable invading and occupying countries that never attacked us, police killing unarmed people and not being held accountable, police bashing the heads of protestors, having the highest incarceration rate in the world, Goverment spying on citizens. I could go on all day. This country is better to live in than most but it's not a great country.

John Waters is a class act. Unlike Hunter Thompson, who looked like a decent guy, talked a good talk, then would snort a line of coke, light up a joint, sip some whiskey and say 'we're all doomed anyways'. John comes out weirdly classy, but then his friendly exuberance wins you over, and then he'll describe what it must've been like spending a night at Michael Jackson's Neverland, and as you're laughing - you want John removed from the premises never to return. Just brilliantly American IMHO.
