When Mr. Cooper said that people have asked him how he sits stony-faced while people spew crazy, and his answer was that he grew up with Gloria Vanderbilt, I spit coffee across the room. This was made so much funnier for me because as he was saying it, I was thinking that I've had people ask me about my reactionless demeanor during customer service lunacy (while on the job), and my answer was, "You'd have to know my mother." I had to replay this a few times for the sheer release and joy of it.

No wonder he can do those interviews with Louis Gohmert, Carolyn Goodman, and Mike Lindell and keep calm. I can conduct interviews with religious conservatives with no problem by simply tuning them out the same way I tune out my mother when she flies off the handle.

Bobbi, I very much related to that part, too. My mother prepared me well for the nuts in the world. Last week she told my nephew he was the reincarnation of his dead brother who died at 10 days old. Later the same day she told him he was the reincarnation of her Uncle Ed.

Total AGREED! That bit really got me as well. I myself have been stoned face my whole life ...being raised by a militant style old fashioned strict father back in the day! I never got humor I could have never related to humor and I always wondered why everyone else was laughing except myself after 65 years I just found out through therapy that it was my painful upbringing!

This is a testament to Anderson Cooper's strengths. His story here only hints at the personal struggles he suffered, while growing up under his famous mother's care. Here he shared in amusing ways what his mother was like. From other sources we know his childhood was not normal, he was wrought with (still has) personal troubles due to his mother and her side of his family, yet we see Anderson Cooper became a wonderful human being, someone greatly respected, and known to most Americans as well as the world.

Listening to Mr. Cooper talking about his mom, I have the impression she was raised in a very protected and out of reality environment. She needed lots of love and patience from him to help her navigate the realities of the world and luckily he has the financial means required as well.

Are you aware what you're saying? She needed lots of support from a child? That is an unholy burden to put on an adult, let alone a child. It's fucked up. Let's not romanticize it. I'm so glad for him if he found a way to deal with it without crumbling completely on the inside but even when he tries to make light of it as he does here he also hints at the strain of it. Try to imagine for a second having to handle an adults life and your own at 10 years old with bo support from other adults. It's monstrous

yeah she didn't raise him silly though he visited & spent periods of time with her. Wealthy 1%'ers hire Nanny's or a fleet of nannies. Then it's off to boarding at a Private School where no parenting happens & you are on your own & never had the comfort of safety, stability & reality sadly, from her. Cornelius Vanderbilt was a famous industrialist who worked in railroads and shipping. He had accumulated the largest fortune in the U.S. at the time of his death. Anderson in 2017 when his partner disclosed their son's first step. he responded furiously. "He should have lied and said, ‘“In my household, when I grew up, you would lie about everything. He should of said: Oh no, he’s not walking at all,’ so when I got home and he walked, we’d be like, ‘Oh my God! It’s the first walk!’”

While Anderson shows respect and love for his mother, his childhood was anything but normal or healthy. His mother made life quite difficult, though unintentionally. She herself had been raised in a very unusual style and environment, so she learned very little about parenting as a female (motherhood). One can say, she didn't know any better. We see his behavioral hang-ups which allowed him to function in a normal world. Growing up he would have had to hide his personal family life from friends, who wouldn't understand things his mother did and instead ostracize Anderson. His laughs and giggles, while infectious and endearing, developed that way as a coping/diverting mechanism. He's a wonderful person raised in very unusual circumstances. It's wonderful he can talk so lovingly of his mother.

Rose Cedar, It's kinda sad that Anderson wanted to be lied to, even though my family often lied to keep from hurting each other I'm not sure that is the healthiest or most " normal" way to conduct family relationships. How does one really become close with someone when one is afraid to speak the truth to them gently even.

My mother offered to do the same thing for me. She was willing to take injections nightly to "reverse menopause" and then carry my & my then husband's embryo. It was right after a grandmother carried her daughter's & son-in-law's triplets to term. I thought it was a sweet and beautiful offer. She wasn't going to raise them, just the vessel for them to grow.

Look I would honestly do that for either of my kids too if they desperately wanted it. I was nearly a surrogate for a gay friend, but as I was pushing 50 and finding a donor for ova would have been super difficult, I ultimately said no because of the age of my own ova - I didn't want the possible attendant risks, on top of existing ones for older birth givers, to complicate matters for any child. But... I think it's a lovely idea, and a lovely gift :-)

God bless you and your father. I know it's a necessary thing, but in our case it was very sad to see how much my 91 year old father declined after handing over his keys. He got very sick a few months later and died right after turning 92. I'm not saying that's what caused it, obviously. It was just so sad to see how much it affected him. Almost like losing his sense of self. ✌️❤️

I worked for the Department of Transportation in our state. One of the most difficult part of the job is taking away an elderly person's license. But for their safety and others it's necessary. If you have trouble convincing your loved one. Write a letter to your local license bureau. Tell them the name of the relative and your concerns about their driving habits. Request a driving test. However if the relative asks the name of who requested the test. The name will have to be given. But in end it's well worth saving their life and others. And most of the time it's a real eye opener for the driver. Hence the possibility of dealing with an angry relative is less of a factor.

I don't either but the difference is that Anderson Cooper isn't a celebrity. He's an award winning journalist who has reported from the front line of many dangerous conflicts around the world. This book opens up and addresses several ugly family issues over the many generations of the bat-shit crazy Vanderbilt legacy. Anderson is a one-of-a-kind AUTHENTIC JOURNALIST!

Of all the things AC could have talked about, this was an excellent choice. Loved the "Bat shit crazy" line and how the kid would be on the front page of the Washington Post every day for the rest of his life. A really funny way to tell a story which could just as easily have been simply weird.

She was an amazing broad. Tricky to have as a mom, I imagine, but also in her own way very loving. I hope you have/had a great relationship overall with your own mum too. Mine was eccentric, but also taught me how to be a good mum, and I'm so grateful I had her as long as I did

You shouldn’t feel what wa sa has spammed all over this comments section, that for sure. I personally feel like the way he told the story (and especially the aside about “redecorating your apartment and you’re paying for it”) implies that she was some level of narcissistic. Having a narcissistic parent myself, the resignation he showed at having to go talk to her about some crazy thing she came up with that he’d have to do is a big mood. And this whole “carrying his baby” thing just feels like a way to get another hook into his life for a period of time (not to mention all the times she’d then be able to say “I carried that child for nine months, I should be able to see it whenever I want!”).

I watched, I believe a 60 minutes piece (possibly the Australian version) of a late-50 / early-60yr old mother who carried her daughter & son-in-law's child for them after numerous failed attempts of their own & relentless heartbreak. Essentially the grandmother gave birth to her daughter AND her grandchild (decades apart of course), like Gloria would've liked to do for Anderson. It was actually quite a beautiful & touching story that highlighted the selfless & sacrificing acts we commit in the name of those we love. I know Anderson was finding the humerus side of things, but it's not so far fetched or unheard of, & can be actually quite miraculous.

IMGM8R - What I have found is that the first part of the interview is posted last. Also, the first part of an interview is usually the longest. Using those two guides, my success rate at viewing interview parts in order is about 90-95%.

I had a total hysterectomy so I’ll never offer but it’s a sweet sentiment 😆 I was raised by my grandparents who were old enough to be my great-grandparents, and my Nannie would have done ANYTHING for me. She passed a few years ago at age 93 but I’m so glad she got to know and love my babies 🥰
