This continues my series on the Colchester Student lathe. I take a closer look at how the taper turning attachment works & describe how to overcome the inherent issue of backlash while making a No3 morse taper stub mandrel.
Some of the issues dealt with are:
1. How to set angle on the taper turning attachment using simple trigonometry and a dial test indicator
2. Finalising the fit using marking blue
3. How to work up close to a shoulder or the tailstock centre
4. Tips for improving surface finish by considering tool force direction and direction of traverse.
The video also includes turning between centres.
This video was made in my other (overseas) workshop where operate this Colchester Student lathe and have my homemade lathe which may appear in the background of some shots.
