I did 2 showers 4 years ago using mapelastic HPG instead of Schluter All Set to bond Kerdi band, and corners for all edges and curb, and there is no leaks, no call backs. I used concrete panels for all walls and around the curbs first.

I’ve always wanted to know this. I’ll be using hydro bone tomorrow. I’m sure it will be the same results. Nice video

I have the same question. Thanks for this video. This is an interesting experiment. We are attempting to bond a paper/fiber waterproofing with a plastic liquid waterproofing. They appear to bond well from your experiment, but what about longevity with daily water exposure? That's the next question to answer. When you say thin vs thick, what does that mean? Aquadefense application instructions are based upon specific mm depth and 2-3 coats. So one experiment could be painting one coat at the specified ml depth, dry fully, then paint the second coat to the specified mm depth, dry fully, thinset a tile over the Aquadefense, dry fully, then after the Aquadefense and thinset cure time has passed, test adhesion of Kerdi and Aquadefense. I'm looking at bonding Kerdi Band (not Kerdi Board) and Aquadefense over a patch material.

I’m doing kerdi over drywall right now… and I have the same curiosity about aquadefense. I even contacted Schluter and they said no…but I kind want to do it over the seams just to be sure

That was my feeling as well. Any company will say no to something they have not designed or tested, which makes sense. But that doesn’t always mean it won’t work.

@@colchilibeck agreed. Did u use it on your shower or still testing? I literally installed kerdi today lol. I saw in youtube a tile installer using hydro ban over the entire pan after installing kerdi membrane. Then I saw one using red guard. Then I saw ardex over the entire kerdi pan.

Did your pan hold up?

@@mlhscanada1069the shower has been in service almost 2 years. I applied aquadefense over kerdi to all the pan…the first foot of wall and then all joints. Two coats of aquadefense over kerdi. No leaks so far…

I got a very important question. I want to experiment with efficiency and little redundancy. I noticed the sandwich bond failed because it couldn’t dry. This is also why they spec unmodified Thinset because modified needs to be dry. Then there is the issue of adhering kerdiband or membrane to hardibacker which is a very thirsty, dry fast surface. Would this be the perfect use for the mapei/Kerdi bond? Adhering kerdi to hardie backer with aqua defense? My next attempt might be an oatey mat and drain, with a mortar bed, waterproofing with kerdiband and aqua defense at the corners and joints, rolling the aquadefense only to the entirety of the pan. Then tile. Let me know what you think
