Lately, it's been pretty cold in the Mountains of Western North Carolina. We sure enjoyed building a fire and drinking our tea and hot chocolate. Thanks for watching, drop a comment below & God bless and keep you!

I’m miss having a fireplace. It’s so soothing to sit by a warm fire. I don’t take anything for granted. When I was in elementary school back in the 80’s I went to spend the night with my best friend (she had spent the night at my house the weekend before). I was shocked when I got off the bus at her house. She had 2 other sisters and 1 brother bring raised by a single mom who didn’t work. They lived off welfare. They only had a tiny 2 bedroom shack. But it was clean. No running water. They had a water hose from outside running to the kitchen sink from a window. No indoor bathroom. they used buckets that were in a corner in each bedroom. No heat/air. In the winter, they used the oven as a source of heat. In the summer, they opened doors/windows and used box fans. I didn’t grow up rich by any means, but I felt like I lived in a mansion after going to her house! We I lived in a 3 bedroom house with 2 bathrooms, and had cable tv. We just never know how others live unless they tell or show us. PS I’m still friends with her today.

We had a fireplace growing up...very soothing. I'm a retired Nurse...My hands stayed red and dry, they hurt and sometimes bled (thank God for gloves) due to constantly washing my hands. A must if working as a Nurse. I used a hand cream by Neutrogena and it was called "Norwegian formula" it was excellent... you didn't have to keep re-applying..it would take 4-5 hand washings before I had to re-apply. Also, Tea Tree Oil is very good to use at night, it will take away the dryness, pain and redness, It's also an antifungal and antibacterial but, this information is from a Nurse so be sure to check with your Dr. to make sure these suggestions are appropriate for you... God Bless and Prayers for you and Katie. I love you both.

Yes, Tea Tree Oil helps also helps ease itchy skin as well! I learned about it yrs ago when, a lady made her own skin care products in her basement.

I was born as a city girl in 54. I think I had the best of both worlds. I got to enjoy the modern world because of where we lived, right outside of Atlanta but my dad's family lived in a small town and they had animals, grew cotton and vegetables. When we spent the night with them we had slop jars to do our buiness in because there was no way we were going out in the dark to the outhouse. They killed their own pigs and milked their own cows. Our breakfast consisted of fresh milk and butter, fresh bacon, home made jam, biscuits from scratch, sorghum syrup and eggs that had just been gathered. Supper was some kind of meat that they had raised and processed with vegetables from their garden or had been canned, more cornbread or biscuits. They had what we called then a pot belly stove. If it was cold outside everyone gathered around that stove. Those are fond memories and I am grateful for being exposed to another way of living besides city life. My PawPaw was a pastor. Most of his churches were in South Ga. I would spend the summers with him and my MawMaw. I remember they had a huge cornfield next to one of the churches he pastored. They would have a huge fryed chicken meal for church members. PawPaw would pick fresh corn while my MawMaw would catch and ring the necks of the chickens that were going to be supper that night. After watching her do that I could not eat chicken until I became an adult.

I’m a retired nurse but when I was working , because I washed my hands a million times a day the winter was rough on them. I used Bert’s Bee Almond and Butter Hand Cream with good success. My hands would get so bad the skin would crack on my knuckles and next to my nails.

RN here as well. I’ve noticed in the recent videos sweet Cori has had red fingers. You don’t want to be rude and say anything even though it would be in a caring way. But since she’s mentioned it, my first thought was raynauds syndrome. But the more I think about it, it more closely resembles Erythromelalgia. There is such a line of demarcation is why I think something more than just chapped skin. Much love Cori.

I really wish we could visit, have a cup of tea or coffee and just talk. We could try to figure out where the root of your depression and anxiety comes from. There’s something causing you to feel like you do and I understand depression only too well. Life isn’t supposed to be all sunshine and roses BUT it isn’t supposed to be like you are feeling. There is a cause and God doesn’t want this suffering for you. It happens to some of us and we were put here to live. We have a God given purpose and leaving before our time is just not acceptable and you will not do such a thing. Do you understand?? I’m talking to you like I know you and it would be wonderful if we could visit. I live in south Texas. Any chance you are in my neck of the woods?

We love our gas fireplace. It looks like a wood burning stove with a glass front and has real natural looking flames. It puts out amazing heat, has a blower and will work in a power outage. It’s easy to use but I still wish it was wood burning. It is what makes the home cozy and one of my favorite things of the house. Our last house had a gas fireplace but it looked so fake and wimpy! We called it the Bic lighter.

We're rural, couple hrs. out of any big city. In the time here, we've had more power-outages than we'd ever experienced. 30+ yrs. of marriage, living in multiple locations, NEVER going several days w/o power anywhere else but here. In 2018, we went 5 days w/o electricity. Really learned to remember to appreciate having it. We looked into getting a big generator, like whole house. Very expensive, but if we stay here, we'll be getting one. The coop (elec.) here has upgraded, which has helped a lot. THANK YOU CORIE & AUSTIN !!! 🙌🏼 💞

We only had heat from the wood stove when I grew up, but it heated the whole house. When we went to our grandparents in the summer we had an outhouse and drew water from the well. I was so happy to be there, I didn't think a thing about it, but I'm thankful not to be doing that now. Corie, I was getting married in 1970 when your Momma was born. 😄 Nice chat dear ones.❤🙏

We grew up with wood heat as well. We had a fireplace on one end and a freestanding teardrop stove on the other. The free standing had a flue heat exchanger with a fan. We actually had to have the windows open in the dead middle of winter it would get so warm. I guess I really never gave it much thought, but I’m the same same age as Tipper. I was born yesterday back in 1970. :)

Hi Cori, I have the same problem with my hands in the winter. Some time ago, a therapist told me something that really helps mine. She told me to pour some salt in my hand, maybe a half teaspoon or so, or more of you want, and then pour olive oil in your hand over the salt. Mix it together and rub all over your hands just like you were putting on lotion. Then rinse your hands in warm water and dry them with a paper towel. If you have any broken skin, this will sting a little but it will be very healing to your hands. It is good to do this several times a day or whenever you feel like you need to. I love it because it is all natural with no chemicals. I use Redmonds Real salt because it still has all the natural minerals in it. I hope you try this and I hope it helps.

I grew up always having a wood heater & or insert. It was always a part of my memories. The first seven years of my marriage we had an insert that we used as our main source of heat as well. We have gas logs (no chimney) now, so being able to have heat in a power outage is something I definitely think about & is a concern of mine. So many homes are built now without the ability to adapt to power outages; it’s a bit concerning to me. We lost power Christmas Eve Eve of 2022 & it was extremely cold outside. Even though it felt chilly in the house (I was finding warmer spots in the sunshine to sit😂), our indoor temp only dropped 2-3(I believe…I know it wasn’t more than that)degrees in about 8 hours. That encouraged us that our home is well insulated.

We sold our cabin a little over a year ago now. I miss my fireplace and the snow in the Smokey Mtns. We had a wood insert once and cut our own wood and hauled it home. It was hard work but we were young like you are now. Time has passed and we are no longer young or able to do that. It does make me miss the comfort of the fire. I use to cook my beans on the wood insert. I don't mess the clean up of the ashes. No matter how careful I was I managed to make a mess a lot of times. Best of luck on selling your house and I know you will enjoy were ever you end up. Bless you both and your baby and keep sharing with us. We love it!! And it's not that rural in Willamette Valley. Think people get "romantic" about living in the past. It was hard. I've had the opportunity knowing what it's like heating with a free standing wood stove, oil stove, gas stove, and now central heat and air. Moving from Michigan to North Carolina to marry the love of my life was like going back in time. We even had a store/ post office combination that was our go to place, and the community all knew one another. Not saying this in a bad way, but you do your best to live and raise a family with what God gives you. I totally agree with you both wanting to provide for yourselves, knowing if we ever needed anything we are blessed to have family, friends, and others ready to help. As I still do today, not getting anything I don't really need, yet treating myself once in awhile if I desire to purchase something I just want. I'm used to seeing Olive, but I guess she wanted to give y'all some quiet time 😊 Thank you for sharing your beautiful fireplace Corie and Austin. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕

I live in upstate NY. It use to be that almost every year for opening day of hunting season just at Thanksgiving we would have some sort of snow on the ground. Made it a bit more easy to track the deer. Now, we usually don't get any measurable snow till around Christmas. I miss our fireplace but not the splitting of the wood. Loved the heat and the smell from the wood stove. Back then, when I would walk home from school, if I saw some tree sections in our driveway, it meant that I had to spend the next few evenings cutting and splitting the wood. My father worked for the City and from time to time, they would have to cut a tree down because it was old, diseased or interfering with some telephone pole wires. Instead of going to the dump, he would drop it off at out house. Watching yours and your parents videos brings back a lot of fond memories. Thanks for the videos. :-)

Nice fireside chat!! here it's been cold which I like. But in the last couple of days, it has warmed up (today it was in the upper 60's) and rainy. When I retired, my primary goal was to get back to life basics, declutter my life, live simply and mindfully, and use technology as a tool to enhance life...not dominate it. Best thing I've ever done! My current house had gas logs. This fall I had a wood-burning fireplace installed and have used it almost every night since late Oct.. Dogs definitely have schedules! I recently (in Oct) got a rehomed 2 yo chocolate lab. He is definitely ready for bed @ 7:30 pm every night!

Enjoyed the close up of y'all starting the fire in your fireplace. Where I live in rural Alabama the usual suspects of power outages are branches or trees falling onto the lines or people running off the bank of the road and hitting a pole. I really like having a real fireplace, and being as self sufficient as possible. It's nice to know that you have an option if the power goes out. We had one in the house that I grew up in, and I'm hoping to have one again someday. I agree with all of the points that you both brought up, there is a lot of give and take with how people were able to live in the past as apposed to now. I am thankful that we have youtube, and for your videos 🙂 Here in Colorado it has been cold, but not as cold as other years. Thank you for the video, it looked like a very nice evening. God bless you both 🙏

I miss having a wood fire so bad! I grew up with a fireplace at home and wood stoves (plural) at my grandparent's house. My husband and I had a wood stove for heat when we first got married, up until our 3rd child was born. I've stacked a whole lot of wood in my lifetime, fresh from the back of an old farm truck to the yard then to the porch as needed. I loved being outside and was willing to do that so I could get out of the chores inside. LOL As life went on we never replaced our wood stove and eventually knew we were too old and too out of shape to haul in wood. I live in eastern Oklahoma, right near the Arkansas border, and we've had a long spell of cold! Today it was in the 40s, which felt good because we had been dealing with temps in the single digits. We've had some beautiful snow, though it was too cold to let the grandkids out for very long to enjoy it. God bless you all.

Very cozy! In all the houses I lived in, we never had a fireplace (except maybe when I was a baby). Hot cocoa is definitely my comfort drink. :) So true how the people before us had the bare necessities. We are very blessed indeed. God bless y’all!

I think the issue of cold is relative. I live in one of the "warmer" areas of the Dakotas and a few weeks ago we didn't get above zero for about 3.5 days. Was -20 at night with -40 windchill. Typically get 25 days or nights a year of subzero temps. The power outages in Applachian areas is probably lack of ruggedness in electrical system. I'm on a rural electric coop, and my power has rarely gone out in the winter. But it is built for the cold.

Love a fire. If l was born in the 1800’s l would be scared my family would have died. lol l love gardening, but l would be afraid if a drought happened. I will take the modern times. It had been very cold in South Mississippi. Been in the Smokey National Park at Christmas time. Going into those cabins. We are like how did they keep warm.

Really enjoyed your fireside chat. I am in southern Ohio, and we just came off of a week of cold freezing snow & icy condition s. & now the last 2/3 days it's been warming back up but raining. 50's . I will take that instead of freezing temps. I like one good snow fall & Im good. But living in Ohio we can get just about all 4 seasons in a week sometimes, especially in the Spring. God bless ya all.

We had a pellet stove. I LOVED it. It heated our entire 2 story house and it had a big window in the front where you could see the fire. It’s easier to run and maintain than a wood stove. It’s been in the single digits here in hubbard, OH with fierce winds. Now, though, we’re having a thaw but soon the snow and low temps will return.

I love our fireplace in the wintertime. There's just something about it that just slows & calms me down. January & February are generally our coldest months but we've only had one freeze in Jan. so far. Today's high here in Texas (south of Houston) will be 61 deg. Thanks for the fireside chat. I love the old ways but also the conveniences of today's world. For me it's important to remember to do everything in moderation (like web surfing, cell phone time, social media, etc.) Loved the fireside chat with y'all.

My hands get just like yours in the winter time if I don’t use Argan oil. I use Argan oil on my hair first every day usually and whatever is left on my hands. I rub it all over my hands. Do this as soon as you come out of the shower with your wet hair don’t wash your hands just carry on they will be fine. A good brand is called one n only😘

We had Temps in single digits last week here in North Mississippi. Lots of snow and ice that hung around for a full week. Businesses were closed. Schools closed for more than a week. That's happens every few years. They're actually predicting more in February but hopefully it won't happen. Enjoyed your fire side chat. Stay safe. Stay warm.

Where I live in Alabama, the winters have definitely been unseasonably warm the past few years. I think it might’ve been two or three years ago I wore shorts and a t shirt to my family Christmas because it was around 80 degrees. I’m very thankful it’s been cold this winter, it feels more normal and I enjoy cold weather. We got about 7 inches of snow a week and a half ago and it got down to -1 degrees at some point. It’s a really nice change when you’re used to hot and muggy weather all of the time.

I remember about 8 years ago asking my aunt who was 94 at the time what she thought was the best thing created since she was born. I thought she would say something like flying on an airplane or computers and she told me toilet paper was the best thing ever!! Just think about it something that we take for granted and it's something so simple, but she thought that was the best thing ever created. I imagine those Sears Catalogs weren't very soft huh?? 🙃
