I love how you folks are incorporating old school hand craftmanship, and hand making your hulls using wood, then incorporating composites to seal them up and strengthen them greatly. Real craftmanship.

Very very nice , how many layers of gelcoat should be used and how many layers of fiberglass should be used to achieve the right thicknessy ?. And what should be the sufficient thickness of the body for a much smaller ship?...

Thank you for your question, Arton. Believe it or not, this is one of the most frequent questions we get on tours. It would not be possible to make an estimate for someone else’s construction project. But I can share what some of our typical construction practices are. The boat in the video is hull #64 which is 68’ long. Our typical planking and glassing schedule for boats in this size range are: - Bottom is 3 layers of ½” marine fir plywood. It gets a layer of 3408 fiberglass bedded in epoxy on the outside and one layer of 2408 on the inner hull. - The sides are constructed of 3 layers of ¼” Okoume plywood. They get a layer of 1708 fiberglass outside and inside. This creates an extremely strong, durable structure. On larger vessels the plywood thicknesses have been the same, but they have gotten doubled up on the exterior fiberglass. And for the boats in the 80’-90’ range the fiberglass inside the hull has also been doubled. On vessels under 46’ in length, the construction schedules have been lighter. Our design/engineering department specifies the construction lamination schedule for each of our boats based on all the design factors. So, they can vary, even on similarly sized hulls. If you are building your own boat, I would recommend you consult a design engineer, preferably one who is familiar with your intended project, to get accurate specifications. Good luck. Thank you. Nice! -- QUESTION -- I don't understand how this is built. Is this made of wood with a few layers of fiberglass over the plywood hull and body? Why not make a mold and use 100% fiberglass so there is no possibility of wood rot?
