Cold Start and Ride on the 730 Diesel. This video shows a cold start of a 1960 John Deere Model 730 Diesel. It was 20ºf when I started the tractor. I also took it out and drove it around in the field a little bit. Shot with a GoPro Hero2 and an iPhone 6s Plus.

1960s, in ND, my dad had a 730 diesel electric start. Usually no issue starting if was in the shed, even at -20f. Later he had electric tank heater to plug in over night. It would start at -40F if needed. At 6th gear the wind must be cold!

A friend of mine has one of these, with direct electric start. I love it it. Originally used on wheat properties, at the other end of the scale in 40 degree C plus heat! (in Australia)

Hey, I enjoyed the ride. I spent years growing up on G. Still love to hear the John Deere. Cold here in Kansas also but I farmed in the panhandle of Texas.

the foot clutch were an add on accesory, I had one few years back, bought used with the foot clutch, it worked great, and the reform had one more advantage, the two foot brake pedals were located together on the right as the modern tractors

Hi Kyle, Im from argentina, here the 730s started to work in late 60s to the early 70s. Its is a great tractor, all of them were diesel with electric start. Even in very cold mornings it will start great due to its hi compression diesel engine

+hector jd ferrero That's awesome! I think the Argentina 730s are way sweet. Especially the ones built later that have the foot clutch. DO you know if that was from the factory, or a popular add-on?

Popular add-on. Now very expensive if you can find one.

Hey, Kyle Weber... now that's a fun way to take the dogs out for a run! Ya gotta love the 'ol 730's. Hope to buy one just like yours for my own one day. Damned things are pricey though, and I guess I just haven't found the right one for me yet. Oh, and props for all your 2-cylinder tractors in the barn. I'd say you've got a pretty good collection going! Are you collecting them for for fun, for future profit, or do you work 'em all? Regardless, I'm envious.

Great video Kyle! Is there some sort of app that lets you connect to the GoPro and show both videos on screen like you did in the video? I'd like to do that when I get a GoPro at some point. Would look cool from two different angles.

+MichaelTJD60 Thanks. I'm glad someone actually watched it long enough to get to that point ;) I used the phone to start/stop/compose the video from the gopro. After that, it was just recording. I then pulled out my phone and recorded from it. The video in a picture was the video the gopro was still recording. I like the video from my iPhone better (better quality for the audio and video--it's an older gopro). I used software on my Mac to do the picture in a picture. I used Final Cut Pro, which allows for multiple video streams at once. I think iMovie can even do picture in picture. Thanks for watching!

I was just wondering....when I was taught to start these, On cold starts, we'd always crank the engine over with the decompression engaged, until the oil pressure went up (usually about 5 seconds), and then popped it off. I just noticed you started yours right up. I always see people do it different ways....

+thebenman28 I've only had it since November, so I'm no pro at it--but I have been told the same thing. I do that when it's cold. I believe in the video the engine was already warm, which is why I just fired it right up. :)

That old girl really scoots. I didn't know they were direct electric starts. Just assumed there would be a pony motor. I was thinking when you stood on the tractor at first with the go pro on your head we seemed really high in the air. looks fun

+Jay Groom haha thanks. The gopro is such a wide angle camera that it really pushes stuff out... That's how it "fits" so much into the scene. I thought a 720/730 would be a nice useful tractor. I'd like to use it to rake with next year with a bigger rake I have. The 720 only had a very small number that were electric start, but quite a few of the 730 ones are. I didn't want to have to fight the maintenance on the pony motor, which is why I wanted the electric start. More things to go wrong... The other thing that's nice about this one is that it has dual remotes, which is what my rake needs. Hopefully spring will come quickly :)

That is great. Pony motors are a nuisance for sure though when it is really cold our old cat started better than the one with direct electric start. Looking forward to the spring videos for sure

how come the exhaust pipe is right next to the air cleaner, wont it suck in the smoke?
@KyleWeber
@KyleWeber 8 жыл бұрын
+Garrett Edwards You'll have to ask John Deere engineers on that one... That's how it is on the newer ones, too. All the way up through the 55 series had the stacks next to each other.

sucking in some smoke wont hurt it anyways. and most of the smoke goes straight up verses into the breather
