I’ve had the 1917 for about 5 years now and about pull the trigger on a Wild West. Your the 2nd review stating the S guard is loosening... isn’t that a bad point for a $90 Bowie or is it just regular thing to glue it? If so why doesn’t CS do it out of the factory. What kind of glue do you use? Do you have a vid on that process. Sorry for all the questions - I’m still an enthusiastic tourist :)
@DonnieBAllDay4 жыл бұрын
It's a common occurrence with most Bowie of this design. No change in function, that's the only reason I haven't tightened mine up yet. From the factory, it is lightly secured as to not have any ugly spots, but the bonding doesn't always hold. The best thing to do is simply unscrew the handle scales and mix up some JB Weld adhesive. I nice lathering there and it should stay tight forever. The blade is so awesome, I just didn't mind, but may be I'll do a vid showing how to secure it.

Sure you can baton with a knife , but actually knifes where not made for chopping wood.that’s why they make axes and hatchets.Knifes we’re considered a prized possession and we’re used for skinning and protection.And cutting.But I guess if you can cut wood that’s good to.And a proper way to us a knife is personal preference I guess.

well I love watching you mess up it keeps me laughing!! lol Great video! The wild west looks a little heavy to me but I do like the wild west! Seems to me it might do more damage the quickest if that makes sense? But I'm still learning. I may do better with that one because it does seem more solid or bigger/heavier.. Kinda like guns. I'm more accurate with a 357 verses a 9 mm pistol. The Cold Steel seems like it would do more work "for me"..idk. Anyway good video love watching ya!
@DonnieBAllDay4 жыл бұрын
You're more accurate with the 357 because you're smart enough to choose it over a 9! haha! The Wild West is a fun blade to swing. It's not too heavy and the best part is it matches your eyes.

I may have missed it in the video, but did the handguard on the WWB begin wiggly, or did it only become that way after rough use? Also, I've seen reviews stating that the blade doesn't arrive too sharp. What was your experience with this? I've also seen a review stating that the sheath isn't great, that the Bowie doesn't easily come out, and go back into it. Could you also tell me your experience with this? Thank you.
@DonnieBAllDay3 жыл бұрын
I did a full out of the box review. Mine came well sharpened and with a good sheath. The guard like on many of this style, loosened from banging on it. A little JB Weld set it right back up.

Hey Donnie B All Day. I am a big fan of your bowie knife reviews and I have 2 of them from cold Steel. I have the 1917 Frontier Bowie and the Natchez bowie. The Natchez Bowie is the best fighting bowie overall but the 1917 comes in a very very close 2nd. When it comes to those 2 blades there is no wrong answer. Both are an excellent choice. The Natchez is blazing fast and has a nice false edge. The 1917 is super strong and nearly indestructible. I have a question for you. The Wild West Bowie, looks like my old Western W49 Bowie knife. Blade and guard are a good match. The biggest difference is the handle on mine is held on with brass pins or rivets, cant tell. And the blade on mine is Stainless steel. Other then that, a very close match. Okay, mine is smaller 14 inches over all, 9 and 3/8 inch long blade. So a tad smaller. P.S. Since the handle on the 1917 Bowie is, you could remove it, reshape it a bit, refinish it, and then put it back on the blade.

Donnie, I am torn between the two. I think for value and crafting practicality, the wild west has it over the 1917. I like the 1917 guard better, doesn't seem to stick out so much. I think the brass guard coming loose on the wild west is from it being so big, and smacking into stuff when striking/chopping. What about the wild west vs the ka bar big brother? the big brother is a crazy chopper too.
@DonnieBAllDay4 жыл бұрын
If handguard is the hang ug, remember that the WWB is brass and VERY easy to shape down. Brass is really soft. That's why it's used. Absorbs a lot of vibration. A simple grinding wheel and sander or even hacksaw and file can change it all. As for the WWB vs the BB? Really depends on what you want it for. If you're looking for a straight up chopper, the WWB has more blade weight and a bigger belly, meaning it generates more momentum in the chop.

Those are the exact two knives I’ve come down two in my search for a big badass knife. One that isn’t stainless. Have to have high carbon. Still can’t make up my mind but I think I’m leaning towards the 1917 just because I like the blued steel. And the extra length. It’s more sword like in my eyes. But I guess I can’t go wrong with either. I was looking a Puma 6396 and some vintage Western W49’s on eBay but you don’t really know what steel the blade is made of. At least not exactly. With a new Cold Steel I know exactly what the steel is. Thanks man for the video.

I use the WWB to baton firewood in the house constantly. But it definitely takes more upkeep than the 1917. That FB is a beast.

Love the reviews, keep up the good work. Seems like both are good choppers, but what about other camp chores? Seems like the choil on the 1917 would lend itself to other camp chores. Both look great, but not everything is about gross chopping. I think they both can perform pretty much anything that you ask of them. Again, well done!!

too Sheffield-y , i don't like the 1/2 clip blade or the sticlish handle, i prefer the meatier Wild West Bowie by cold steel or ontario marine raider that style or an 11' blade on a frost cutlery eagle knuckle grip bowie blade

What I dont understand is how what Is essentially a copy of the Western cutlery model 49 is in any way a " wild west " bowie.

The model 49 was made after western trail knife designs. It was mass produced and popularized by Western, but the design was nothing new.
