Cold Steel should come out with a non-blued version, with a handle made from something else. Like micarta or G10 scales. But it is a cool design. Wish I had one. Maybe one day.

I was very happy to see you put up another video on the 1917 frontier ,love the knife, i don’t have one, wanted one for ages, until recently it had been out of stock for about two years . So I started making one, haven’t got to far on that, but a small difference, complete full tang. I love the sheath on the cold steel one, sliding it out of the frog is a great feature in this day and age,you know, getting in and out of the car ,people around. Take care man, appreciate the after uses review.

I can only speak for my 1917...It has not been able to do real baton firewood splitting that tang snapped off like a toothpick. My Kukri plus and Trailer Master have split the same type of heavy baton splitting firewood for years now with no issues. I consider the 1917 a failure, unless of course it is custom built with a real full tang.

Interesting video, but I would never use a $200 knife to baton unless it was a survival situation. You can get a decent hatchet for $25… team it with a folding Laplander saw and a smaller bushcraft knife like a Mora, you can do most bushcraft tasks with that set up. But always interesting to see Donnie testing stuff to the limit ☺️

Glad you made this video Donnie. I have been undecided on the 1917 since 2014 because of the partial tang. This update video after years of use sealed the deal for me. Thank you very much. I am hoping the one I ordered is the updated 1085 steel and not the old 1055 (it looks like they ceased the old 1055 after the first 4 years). Yet again you have helped a purchase :). Would be super interesting to see you make some custom handles for yours. Just for the fun of it.

Like others, I bought it after your video. Very cool knife. The only thing I don't like is the stud being on the removable frog rather than part of the sheath. I like the old Bowie sheaths with the studs (I've read that they came in handy as a stop when the knives were just thrust through the belt) and assumed that's what this would be when I first saw an image of it. I think this is the only knife I've seen with the stud not part of the sheath.

I got mine for $109, which is a steal for such a huge hunk of 1085, well heat treeated steel. Mine definitely didn't come very sharp, but it wasn't dull either. It will just take 5 minutes on the Work Sharp, to get it hair popping sharp. Other than that, the fit and finish are perfect. The sheath is excellent. Heck, the sheath alone is worth at least $60. I have yet to see a leather sheath this nice, especially from all the expensive Bowie manufacturers (Case, Bear & Son, etc). You can reverse the frog, so the sheath doesn't hang as low off your belt. The handle scales are definitely uncomfortable. I looked for aftermarket scales, and couldn't find any. My palms are 11" in circumference, so the handle is very small in my hand. I imagine it's tiny in DBAD's hands. He's a bigger guy than me. He seems to make it work. If you're going to take it camping or backpacking, knife gloves might be a wise choice. The square handle will hurt anyone after hard use. I did measure the spine thickness, and it'a about 1mm shy of 0.25" thick. Due to the length if the blade, the spine seems thinner to the eye. The heat treatment on this knife must be excellent. They're made by Windlass in India. BTW, I believe the way Widlass makes kn8ves, may account for why some people get thicker or thinner spines, and why some come very sharp, whike others don't. I don't condone knife destruction videos. However, Joe X had a really tough time breaking this knife, because the steel was so tough.

I've heard stories of people getting them less than sharp

@@DonnieBAllDay mine definitely won't cut paper or hair. But, for $109, I don't mind it. I think if I put it on the Work Sharp Ken Onion, in the finest grit belt, and then the leather strop, that's all it will take. BTW, I measure the spine thickness again (ruler not calipers, but I am a mechanical engineer). I measured a very clear 0.25" at the guard. Where the spine transitions to the swedge, I measured 5.5_mm. it seems to get thinner slowly from the guard to the swedge transition. I imagine people will get different results, since it's made by Windlass.

The wood scale can be removed and coated with shoe goo, that works well for me. Heavy baton splitting in cold temperatures thru Ash hardwood is what snapped mine on both occasions , like I said above, my Blade is Excellent, just that tand design that failed me, I believe mine is the early 1055 model. My Kukri plus in SK-5 , and my 01 trailer master have survived my destructive batoning for years now. Very interesting work keep it up!👍👍🗡🔥🇺🇸

Donnie D, I got to say I like the look of the Cold Steel 1917 Bowie knife. However, I was in complete shock when JoeX, the knife Destroyer, broke into pieces the Cold Steel 1917 Bowie. At the same time, I was in awe that JoeX was not able to break the Cold Steel Black Bear Bowie Machete! That leaves me to believe that the Cold Steel hybrid Black Bear Bowie Machete is the one to choose, without breaking the wallet or knife!

I also find the handle scale quite functional . Mine wasn’t super sharp but decent, however it definitely struggled against the soda bottles. Hey I double dare ya to do some 1.25 lt soda bottles with some big blades .

The thick blades are always gonna struggle with water bottles, especially the 1917 with that big fuller, see the cutting edge immediately goes to a thick rib so you are almost trying to shear thru with s profile that is almost pipe shaped. Now that Flat grind of the Natchez is Made for such a task, the test video I did for your Apocalypse Bowie I cut that water bottle with the blade dull. I did that cut before I sharpened it!😎👍🗡

I k now it is a knife test, but batoning in general just looks so stupid and waste of time and energy, pluss the chance of ruining a fine knife. Not that i dont think this knife can take alot of abuse, but just why. If one have to do it, atleast it would be both normal and wise to choose a straight good wood without knots. Ans again, i understand this vid is for showing the quality and potential of the knife.

But Tom is actually extremely important when Bush crafting. Then. When out in about when traveling late you aren't carrying multiple tools being multiple tools. Your knife has to be a one all do all.

@@DonnieBAllDay i never need to baton.dont understand why others need to. Was never done in the old days. I live in Norway and has really never needed to. Besides,we use axes up here in the North. But there is allways dry wood and twigs or whatever. Round wood burn you know🤔 outside, because of the huge amount of oxygen, the wood burns fast. If you dont split it,it burns a little slower. Much slower,I have other things to do than finding and splitting wood all the time. It was not a thing outdoorsmen used to do before KZfaq. And if you dont want do be botherd with finding dry stuff to light a fire, you dont need to split something larger than wrist size wood. In the winter here,we burn logs(whole trees). But relax,I have nothing against splitting the before mentioned wrist size wood, to make some kindling. You know, even in heavy rain, the water never goes deep into dry wood. Maybe just 1-2 mm ideep. A little flame and it just damps off. And in the winter, all the dead trees and wood is dry,so is all the twigs. We mostly have spruce, pine and birch trees, lots of others off course, but this is the main trees. Here where I live,it is mainly spruce and birch. Birch Bark and dry spruce twigs is everywhere. And dead standing trees, saw and axe is the tools here. But font worry,I love large and huge knives and machetes too. And I am a collector and user of knives, axes, tomahawks and alot of swords and guns😄 so I to,often go out when it is just some hours i am out there, with a large knife. It is easy and light. But for serious outdoors life and long trips and allways in the winter. You carry a saw, axe and knives and the means to sharpen and take good care of them, otherwise you freeze to death.
