The VG-10 San Mai III® blade is perfectly heat treated and a double grind is expertly applied. Then the surface of the blade is polished to a beautiful satin finish and the edges are honed and buffed to hair shaving sharpness! The black G10 scales are fastened to the blade tang by 6 stainless pins and expertly hand shaped and contoured.This classic sub-hilt design fighter was first developed by Bob Loveless, one of the founding members of the knifemaker’s guild. It’s perhaps the quintessential combat knife. Its 8” blade offers excellent reach and incredible penetration with very little physical effort. The sub hilt practically eliminates the possibility of the hand being dislodged or coming into contact with the blade. Plus, the sub hilt facilitates rapid and effortless withdrawal after insertion. Just heard Cold Steel is bringing back the Black Bear and I'm over the moon! Lost mine a while back during a fall trip and honestly felt like I lost a piece of my soul! Tried finding a replacement, but nothing ever came close to scratching the itch,

It deserves to be pointed out as Lynn did in an old video that this is a design by the late, great Bob Loveless. The most revered and expensive custom maker of modern times. Unbeatable Cold Steel quality, attention to detail and pricing on a Loveless design is quite a combo.

I've only had one cold steel, a recon tanto and i loved it . When I moved country I had to sell it. I think its about time to start adding some cold steels back to my collection

The current Black Bear Classic in San mai can be found on really good deals, something we disnt see with the Hattori made model of the past. Now if they would just taper the tang, like they dis with the Konjo fixed blade, and maybe add red liners, for another Andrew Jackson or two even, plenty would pay the extra. Especually if they would get back with a leather sheath. But for a budget offering this is a steal. Only a few of us actually bring our Loveless knives out and carry them, even fewer use them. This though is a great user as well.

I have some high end blades from other manufacturers in my collection of over 100 knives but Cold Steel is my top choice when I want function and reliability. I use Cold Steel blades in my taxidermy shop and they take a beating, they also last twice as long as any other blade I've tried. I'm definitely a fan.

I love how cold steel takes inspiration from other cultures and knives . I read somewhere that the Black Bear classic is based on a historic design in Russia . It's absolutely cool piece!

I would love a O1 or SK85 version of the recon scout or the trailmaster, i missed the chance to buy one when they were in production and the 3v or san mai versions are too expensive for me to really want to take them out and use them

I have the OSS and ended up just cutting off the 2nd guard part. They should make a version without it. Great blade but the secondary guard just limits how you can hold it

I can reverse grip that blade with a sub hilt like it’s nothing. Maybe your hands are too small or too big.
