ToolScouter, This brought a tear to my eye. I had the identical Lufkin 100 footer, and indeed, primarily used by Land surveyors. Originally measuring distances was accomplished using very accurately calibrated Chains. And the term hold to this day. A surveyor will say they need to “Chain” the distance between two points. Mine was given to my by my Dad and he engraved my name in the frame. But that wasn’t enough to prevent some Miscreant from steeling it from my tool box while I was on vacation! You didn’t mention it but your example was graduated in feet and Tenths, the traditional unit of land measurement in the US. BTW, mine had a stained and varnished handle and I believe that is the way they came from the factory. I’d bet that the handle got painted after an incident where someone laid it down in the weeds and had a hard time finding it! Still miss my 100 ft. Surveyor’s chain. Mark L😊

Mark, I love reading comments like yours. Thank you so much for sharing about this beautiful little tool. I so appreciate you sharing the term of chaining the distance between two points. I will refer to this from now on as “the chain”. Thanks as well for sharing about the tenths that are marked on the measure for land surveying. Always great to hear from viewers like you, come by anytime and have a great week.

You have a nice drafting set. The pieces you say look like tweezers are actually ink pens. Most drawing was done with lead, but some mechanical drawings and plans were required to be in ink. The tweezers held ink for the drawing. It was really frustrating to be almost finished with a complex drawing in ink, just to have a little burp and drop a blob of ink on your print. I speak from experience. When I was at college working on my Civil Engineering degree, long before CAD, we did all our drawings by hand and some had to be in ink. At the same time I was using those instruments, my computer was a Post Versalog slide rule!

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from people like you who have use the tools. I was in high school in the late 80s and enjoyed taking drafting classes. I think the technical drawings that we did in 3-D were a form of art. We never did use ink though, everything was done with mechanical lead pencils. I did have a chance to take a CAD systems class, and it took all the fun out of it. I enjoyed being able to see it in your mind and put it down on paper. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. Always great to have you visit me here in the shop. Hope you have a great week.

Great video, I will help you identify some of the items, The box of Crowns are in glass bottles and the numbers are used with a chart to help find the ones you want. They use different tap sizes around normally 8-10. That incabloc item you said was for a larger clock is an advertising item to show off the shock system in a watch that helps prevent the balance shaft from breaking if it is dropped. They became common in watch after the late 40"s and incabloc is probably the most common. It's a very rare item. The taps and the box of tools normally do have 2 purposes, but I would need a closer shot of the vise end to be sure. They can be used to hold the taps and sometimes they can be used to move metal around the jewel if it need to be removed. The next box said it held ruby jewels. Some jewels are very small so make sure to use magnification and make sure they aren't hiding in plain sight. The jewel screws are used to hold the jewel mounts and yes, they are very small. The calipers are used to true balances, pivots and wheels if they are bent and the little rod with the slots are used to bend or true the components. The item marked Germany is normally a puller used to remove watch hands but it has other uses as well. The bar with the holes has many uses as well but it is normally used to press out press fit pivots from balances or wheels. That black round item be used as a tool to hold items down while working on the movement.

In some of the other things I’ve gone through of his there were some very fine point tweezers. He also had a little multi lens magnifying glass that attached to his eyeglasses. He could put them down over the lens of his eyeglass and look right down into the small watches. Sometimes everybody had to freeze in the house because something fell off the bench. A few select adults would get down on their hands and knees and life didn’t begin again until they found that part on the floor. Thanks for your visit and have a great weekend.

That set of holders, I believe are for holding tiny balance screws. Looks like you have some vials of balance screws. The caliper is a balance truing caliper. The balance is clamped in either end to check the trueness with the arms. The tool is used to straighten out the balance or the arm of the balance. The one clamping tool, I believe is a hand remover.
