I got my battle gim today. Razor sharp, cut boxes and paper easily. Guard didn't block any movements, and fittings were all secure. A little blade heavy, and short handle, but those can be overlooked.

Great to see you again. Many years ago I watched you do some great forms with machetes. In my country finding traditional weapons is difficult so we practice jian and dao taichi forms with machetes.

From what I've researched, it depends on who you ask. In some styles, the tassel is purely for decoration, in others it's meant to draw the opponents attention away from the sword (especially when moving quickly)

i once saw an instructional video for bagua swordmanships - the instructor stated that there are some moves where the tassel brushes the eyes of your opponent. He also mentioned that a red tassel flashing around draws the opponent's eye as a distraction - Like what Raymond Kong there said - makes them worry about blood or something. He also said something about it being like a counterweight, but I can't really see the logic there.

All are good, but if if you want something more classy, I go with the battle gim. The cheaper guy just doesn't have that "feel" to me, haha. It's a good chopper though

they guard you mean? it felt very natural to me and it does have very traditional vibe. Just that it doesn't look like most of the "crap" modern swords on the market now is what I can say. (like those so called "tai chi sword" sold for 30-35 bucks). It is very nice feeling in hand, way better than many swords on the market today.

Try search up Kult of Athena, they have some good oxtail there now, but prepare to pay about $450 to $500 for each, those under that price is not good, at least won't hold up for long. The $500 range stuff can last a long time and you can really cut with them, like a real weapon in the old days. You are right though, tons of DragonWell crap out there, haha.. kungfu lovers NEED and DEMAND a better quality weapon for their training! You got the taste!

Regarding the jade lion, after your helpful review on a forum, I've decided against buying it or recommending it to my students. If it's handle and guard requires JB weld to secure a $650 product, then Cold Steel really has lost its quality control and my school may as well deal with Seven Star Trading for our gear needs. Right now everyone is canceling their Battle Gim, regular Gim, and Jade Lion orders.

isstanar I got my battle gim yesterday,and it is a beautiful piece of art, also very practical at the same time... I heard lots of bad thing about cold steel's quality control and this battle gim particularly, but I still decided to give it a try, and I got a good one eventually lol I recommend kult of Athena as a buying source. it seems like they really care about their customers and only sent you the sword with good quality

Chiinnature, thanks for your review of these fantastic-looking swords. I am a newbie to sword collecting and was looking at some Cold Steel Products, but I have some concerns that they may be made too thin and break too easily. Do you know anything about this? Also, when these are called "battle-ready swords," could you use these swords in a sword fight to parry and block strikes without them getting too damaged?
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 9 жыл бұрын
Warman2012 4_da_winz No CS swords are actually built tough and overkill with their durability, and I don't see them being too thin or fragile either. I have a bunch of CS and they are always out-performing my expectation. You can rely on them for this

I am thinking about getting one of the two Gim swords. I am not particularly interested in the fancy Jade Lion sword; I just want something to fight with. Can someone tell me about the grips on the two Gim swords? I know they are wooden, but what is the shape; oval, circular, or something? What is the diameter of each hilt? How is the traction; are they slippery? I have gotten some swords only to find that the grip has such a large diameter, or are slippery, and I cannot get a good grasp in it.

that is how the swords where back then they did not etch them at least chinese swords some cultures did but as far a chinese they relied on the polish to show the pattern

@Chiinnature 9 жыл бұрын
starfury Lucario You are wrong, 3lb is not an issue, even 9lb is not an issue, if the balance is good and at the right spot. A 1.5lb sword with the point of balance way out will feel like a 6lb sword with right balance too. The battle gim is not light for a beginner, it is okay acceptable but definitely not "light" at all, especially cold steel love blade tip heavy designs...

Thanks for the reply, man! That's good to know. If you don't mind the question, how do you maintain these swords, more particularly the Jade lion? Do you coat them with a certain oil every few months or after every use? Do you sharpen them often?
@deanbriscoe8722
@deanbriscoe8722 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can give me some advice too, since you seem to know a good deal more about swords than me: I'm looking for a really good short sword for a shit hit the fan scenario to add to my armament. I do have firearms, but I'd like to have a really good melee weapon in case I run out of ammo. A lot of people have suggested I get something cheaper, or a half-decent machete, but if I'm ever out of ammo, then I want to know that I have the best short sword possible. For combat, would you suggest something other than the jade lion dagger? I have some martial arts experience, but I'm not an advanced kali or edged weapons guy. I'd mainly use the dagger for stabbing, like the Romans did, which I feel would be better for indoors home invasion esc stuff.
@Chiinnature

I suggest the war sword (da dao) here - amzn.to/2xS8kqw , you can see I chopped a table in half with it on youtube review lol... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLuclc2TlZbYpp8.html - if you are thinking of cheaper, you can go for machete, they work and cold steel have the best "shape" for you in all sorts. I have a bunch of them and really like the all terrain chopper machete by CS. Check those out, they are good for martial art practice too. For tabbing, the CS also make gladius sword machete, cheap and sharp and durable. Just avoid those crappy average joe brand machete and you are good.
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 6 жыл бұрын
there is no need to sharpen your sword all the time, even you chop with it often, all you need is spray it down with some WD40 or silicone spray and wipe it down to remove all the crap you stick on the blade, next time it is good to use again. Forget all the Japanese fancy fan boy bling bling, it's a friggin blade for chopping and its metal, all you need is clean off the crap and go chop again. Don't oversharpen your swords. Let me tell ya, I almost cut a person's arm off with a semi sharpen edge sword, and that was a practice session. You don't need razor edge to kill with a sword. Actually, we blunt the edge a bit on purpose ot make it what we call the "battle edge", so it is more durable and won't chip and nick on hard impacts but still can chop the head or arm off nicely
