Good knives, try to find one nowadays tho... I didnt like the black coating at first, but it grew on me as I realised it protected the blade from corrosion. That said, none of my "unprotected" Cold Steel blades (and I have a few) have corroded over the decades I have owned, carried, and used them... Lynn Thompson-era Cold Steel knives came sharp and sturdy. Lynn Thompson-era CS knives will carry a premium in future.

Try finding a Recon Scout as of 6-15-20. Unobtainium is easier to locate. Hope to find one someday! That said Im not a fan of the black coatings.. but then I don't live in humid or sea-coastal areas. I might think more of them if that were the case.

As a Cold Steel fan, I enjoyed the video. I couldn't afford either knife, but I did buy the golden version of the Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist during a Cold Steel Holiday Sale. Its length is between the Recon Scout and the Trail Master. I also own a Recon Tanto San Mai 3 (from Japan), Kobun, Click N Cut, 3 Machetes, 9 Folding Knives, 19 Food Prep Knives, and other tools from Cold Steel. Love the company and its products! I have used the Drop Forged Survivalist for various outdoor endeavors. Other than the gold color getting scratched and the all-metal handle getting wrapped, it is a great knife. 52100 High Carbon steel is some tough stuff! Glad I bought it!

Just got my San Mai III Trailmaster off Amazon and was surprised it was made in Japan. Beautiful piece with almost perfect laminate line and expertly ground convex edge. Then you look at nylon covered cardboard sheath, OH well. Hope GSM Outdoors doesn't get rid of the nicer CS blades. I can see a future of all clam shell packaging in 8CR13MOV and no name Stainless steel.

buy a custom leather knife..either that or just buy the Fallkniven Thor or Modern bowie. I think Cold Steel San Mai TM's money is all spent on the knife and not the sheath, hence only 1/2 the price of the Fallknivens.
@dennisleighton2812 Жыл бұрын
Agree totally on the sheath - it is crap! On my knife that laminate line IS perfect - I measured it! I had a custom sheath made for mine (recently received). It was made by Rob Evans, Woodsman, out of Wales, UK. Magnificent leather sheath. [Note: the reason it was made in Japan is that they could not find anyone ANYWHERE else, who could meet the standards they required, consistently, at the cost they were prepared to pay. Don't be disappointed. I still reckon it matches the Falkniven, possibly even better, at half the price. Cheers mate, and enjoy your San Mai!

Clean thoroughly and degrease the TrailMaster, and coat it with enamel-based Rustoleum. Should keep the rust away. Truth be told tho, Ive never had a rust problem with any of my Cold Steel knives. They change the steel to promote new sales on old models. As far as black coatings and food prep, it isn't going to hurt you. The coating itself must be ingested and you have to eat a bunch of it. If you're camping for survival and you need to cut up and animal to eat, it wont bother you at all. Just dont make it your everyday steak knife.
