I bought a Western W49 F model Bowie back when we lived in Lander, Wyoming, around 1983. It was in the display case at the old ALCO store for "many years," according to the sales person behind the counter. In fact, it had been there long enough that the blade had a tiny rust spot on it at the base of the blade, probably from being handled. I asked the manager how much he would take for it, and he answered, "make me an offer." Well, times bein what they were, I offered him thirty dollars, fully expecting him to show me the exit! He, however, surprised me with one word: "Sold!" Long story short, when I saw your review of this Cold Steel Bowie, I thought at first you had an old Western Bowie in your hand. My Western Bowie has a blade of tool steel (I don't know what grade or type) and I have carried it over many a hunting and camping trip and it has never failed me. Holds an edge like no other knife I have ever owned. It has limbed and cut down many a small tree for firewood and shelters and gutted and skinned probably over a hundred Mule deer, elk and antelope, and a few coyotes, as well. That Cold Steel Bowie is an almost exact duplicate of my (made in USA) Western Bowie! The sheath is the same, as well. I pray your Bowie gives you equally good service over the years you own it. Congratulations for insisting on quality from Cold Steel.

David Berry ,... Thanx. The Cold Steel Frontier Bowie is made in Pakistan I believe. I used to live in Montana and I could sit a knife out and never think twice about it. Never had any Rust issues. Very Dry climate there. The Eastern U.S. is a very different climate, it’s humid, and steel rusts before my eyes here. I have to clean and oil my carbon blades often to keep the rust at bay.

@@JoeDoomsday I remember the Years I spent as a cop in south Fulton County, near Atlanta, and the strict attention I had to pay to my Colt Gold Cup National Match that I carried for at least two years. As you said, if I wasn't careful, I could watch it rust right before my eyes! We left Atlanta in '76 and we've never looked back! (PS: You're right about the dryness) God bless you and yours!

Hey, David. I found one of these old Bowies out in the high desert of Nevada. Rusty and chipped, one scale missing, slightly bent. I figured it for one of those cheapo fantasy-style jobs, $5 at the flea market, laid it out under the solar panels and forgot about it for a few years. Just last week, I was watching a KZfaq video about vinegar and rust, so I went out and wrapped that sucker in napkins and soaked 'er good with vinegar. Wiped it off next day, went after it with a stiff brush, and Western USA W49 M came up on the blade. Stuck it back in the vinegar and started working on new scales from an old hickory ax handle. That didn't work out so well, so I just paracorded the handle and called it good. I'll try again with an elk antler some time, maybe. That second dose of vinegar on bare metal gave it a real nice rust blue kind of finish/patina. Filed out the nicks, put a fine edge on it, and now it hangs right next to the door, ready for work. Now, I'm looking for more Western knives, like the Official Boy Scout fixed blade...I have two Eagle Scout sons, and two Eagle Scout grandsons. Between knives and special Eagle Scout edition Henry rifles, I'm glad I found that knife. Cost me maybe a nickel to restore it to usefulness (I suspect any collector value it may have had is long gone).

@@Broddi169 Brings back memories. I had sold my W49 for like 150 about 10 years ago . I had sold a lot of knives back then . We were in a financial mess so I let go of a lot of hard to find blades . Including the Cold Steel Natchez. I’m happy to report that I did finally get most of them back over the years with the exception of the original Western . My letter code was D if I can recall . So I’m still trying to get that back one of these years . I used to just want what I had originally sold but it don’t matter anymore … As long as it’s a nice well kept blade I will be happy . I’ve seen some horrible looking ones selling for like $200 haha . So I’m sure I’ll be paying $300 plus . Not today though .

Thanks for posting this video.. nice knife, excellent review. Wish it was 1/4" thick, but the width of the blade might somewhat make up for that as far as blade strength goes.

Sorry ... I’m back again ... But you just had me thinking in deep thought about this Bowie knife . I have over 150 knives ( mostly Bowie ). If I were to sell all of my knives , I would absolutely keep This Guy here , and my Movie collection knives ( I did a video just the other day on my movie knife collection), and I would keep all of my Buck Knives . ( all sentimental). Oh -/ and my Cold Steel collection of course . The rest I could part with one day . It would still be very hard to part with my collection but you just never know when you get into a financial crisis ( knock on wood ) “ knock - knock - knock “!! Thanks for this vid bro !! ( and also for allowing me to comment ). 🤠

It looks good, but it's awful light built. I thought about getting one however after doing some research on the specifications I figured that this knife 🔪 wouldn't have a chance of withstanding the use and abuse my work requires. I needed a good Chopping tool. Something weighing a couple of Pounds or more that wasn't too expensive that if damaged, lost or destroyed I wouldn't cry over. I found a style that fits my needs for a good price so I bought Four of them. Thank you for the video,

I almost bought one of these. Then I realized its pretty much a copy of my Western W-49 Bowie knife I bought back in the early 80's. So I bought the 1917 Frontier Bowie instead. Not oil, its called Cosmalline, hope I spelled that right. And you clean it off with WD40 and a rag.
@JoeDoomsday
@JoeDoomsday 4 жыл бұрын
James Hart,... yep it’s coated in Cosmalline. ( I’m not sure of the spelling either) anyhow, keep these knives covered in Cosmalline or Vaseline , because they are Very Prone to Rust! Store them in a Dry Place. Both the Wild West Bowie & the Frontier Bowie RUST surprisingly Fast I’d they are not covered in grease.

@@JoeDoomsday I'm lucky, I live in a dry place. Average humidity is about 15%. But yes I do take care of all my blades. Plus, I think my W-49, which has the letter H stamped on it, so 1984, is in stainless steel. I think. Any ways, stay safe, and have a good one.

As someone who owns a W49 , it looks a fair bit blade heavier , the W49 will still take a limb , especially with a modded edge This thing will probably do it out of box , and with a proper edge , (as much as I love cold steel , their knives don't come the sharpest in my experience ) It'll probably be absolutely nasty
