I love my old San Mai Natchez, but it was a little expensive for me to be able to convince myself to use it for woods work, and the cable tang is maybe not the best suited to those tasks. I’d like to add a Laredo Bowie for the beauty and one of these Old West Bowies for the beast mode!

So weird. My 1917 just arrived an hour ago. For 114.00. It’s a steal. Told you we see eye to eye. Love to contact you about muscular development in Middle Ages. Knives also. Love the work on the guard. The grip is slightly blocky but I’ll dremel it down similar. How do you polish your blades. I’m learning so I’m up to sharpening correctly and purchasing good knives. That’s from you and another I can tell is honest

For knife polish, I use MAAS. When I'm doing a re-do, lots of fine sanding

Thanks for the reply. You can’t leave many knives stock guns, knives etc. it’s a fun hobby I did that with Mustang and 20,000 later it was faster and handled better. Cost me a lot to keep from a divorce for going a couple seconds faster in a Quarter. Lol

Hey Donnie B, I do appreciate a big Bowie. Today I was out chasing deer with a Bowie on the belt. Man that blade can chop! Goes to show the versatility of a Bowie. If you were a soldier in the jungle would you carry a machete or a big Bowie? I am thinking Bowie. Cheers Dave 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
@DonnieBAllDay

In the jungle, a thick machete would have to be it, but there just might be a Bowie back up

Great stuff! I have a request: Crazy Crow trading post has a bunch of nice looking affordable bowies and large knives. Do you think any of them are good? The one that particularly interests me is the Rio Grande Camp Knife and Missouri Belt knife. 1830s styled and apparently 10"/6-3/4" carbon steel with full tang. But absolutely no reviews or anything about it. If no one's talking about it, surely it can't be notable right? EDIT: Actually please ignore my request as the work you've done with the kukri house is all stuff of better value anyways probably

A lot of their stuff comes straight from the Szco catalog. They get dealer prices, then raise them a little past MSRP to make some profit. Fit and finish is lack luster and the edges are hit or miss, but you can find some gems. They are very much budget blades, but my Szco High Carbon Bowie is too and that things still kicking

@@DonnieBAllDay Thank you for the info! Personally I think small knives need good edge holding cause they get used so much and for finer work. Big knives? Just need to be tough! Big knife jobs are infrequent and rough... more important to be durable and easily maintained IMO

@@Ajaxykins So the knife arrived today. I cannot test it yet (for a reason I'll get into in just a second) but here are my initial impressions: CONS: - The fit and finish are what you'd expect for $60. There are small gaps between the scales, guard, and tang. - The knife tarnished a little in storage. Small spots on the brass are green, the steel grey. (But hey, at least it's good old-fashioned carbon.) - No information on where it came from or who made it, except for a single word prominently stamped on one side: "INDIA." (Windlass, maybe?) - The knife arrived ... well, not *blunt* per se, but basically bayonet-dull. There's a mostly-even grind, but the angle is so broad it cannot cut anything I would want it to cut. Except people, of course. So before I test it I'm putting it to some stones for a few hours and hoping I can pull back the bevel into a cutting edge. PROS: - Despite the F&F, nothing wobbles. The scales and guard are rock-solid. I think they're both pinned and glued to explain this, which is a plus. - I find the rectangular handle really comfortable. The edges don't jab into my palm at all. Bone is a great handle material too because it warms in your hand. I could hold this thing for hours. - Full-tang, with a very respectable thickness (maybe 3/16?). The full flat grind very easily narrows down into a cutting edge which will be quite respectable when I can put an actual grind to it. - The balance sits barely in front of the guard, so despite the size this thing is not a chopper. However, its weight disappears in the hand, and I can see it being very comfortable for hours of draw-cuts and batonning and such. - Before I fucked it up with sharpening scratches, it was a truly beautiful piece. But that's nbd because I put a patina on all my carbon steel anyway. Maybe it'll be even more beautiful after that.

I just ordered one my only gripe is just afyer ordering I watch the joe x video ,cold steel says its a full tang but in Joe's video is isn't more a skeleton tang is this correct
@DonnieBAllDay

It is, but there's nothing to keep that from lasting a lifetime. The only thing people get with this knife is the guard rattle that happens with pressure fit guards. I always recommend simply taking off the scales and using good glue like JB Weld on the guard at the scales side and then just putting back on the scales. No more rattle.

Im going against the current here, why modify such a pretty knife, there are hundreds out there that look like your new version, just buy one, its like buying a christmas tree and turning it into a flag pole, and saying ive made some improvements.
@DonnieBAllDay
@DonnieBAllDay 11 ай бұрын
very simple. This knife needed improvements. There are less stock knives that look like mine than the original. The original grip was a little boxy and slick. The original was a little too big and it bent. The spine was a little too soft and dented.
