Believe it or not, the American Tanto that Lynn Thompson made famous has actual Japanese roots. There was the Chokuto, a straight sword with a primary tip supported by the spine. It also had a pronounced secondary point (yokote), looking like the Cold Steel Tanto Point knives, but in a sword form. But I did buy one in the new AUS10A steel. It is a VERY nice big knife! I also bought the XL Drop Point as well.

Well, I bought my first "full size" Cold Steel folder in the very early 1990's. It was the Vaquero Grande, and as I recall it was the first 5 1/2 inch folder in their lineup. It came only in full cerrated back then, and it said "self defence and destruction". I still have my very first one plus a second one, the verry same one but with an iron pocket clip. First one had no clip at all. There was no Triad Lock but a sturdy backlock, and there is no wiggle in no direction after 30 years of heavy use. I only can recommend those knifes. They are heirloom pieces.

I got it at Amazon for $47.60, i want this baby so bad i even paid the two day shipping for a total of $70.68 Not bad for a blade that could easily cost you that without any shipping. I only have 2 Cold Steel products and I have had major quality issues with both. The first was an SRK that came extremely dull from the online store I purchased it from. I sent it back (shipping on my dime, Internationally) and they sent me back an SRK that was now razor sharp, but the 2nd one I got had a really loose sheath that the knife falls out of if you turn it upside down. So that's TWO issues with one purchase. And my new XL voyager has big grooves in the side of the blade steel.

Israel is the handles for the Clip, Tanto n Vaquero XL exactly same width n length? Do you think you could do a vid on how all 3 blade shapes fare against each other? I have a rough idea but if you could show how it cuts on say a thick watermelon skin eg: tanto for snap n drag cuts with sub tip, Vaquero with front belly drag cuts and Clip point...If watermelon skin is not good maybe some material that can leave blade marks clearly!And show the strengths of each shape through a demo! Thanks.

I own all the xl voyagers and the xl talwar and recon 1 clip point. Out of all of them the talwars my favorite BUT i will say if I could only have one for a shtf situation it'd be this one no questions asked. Dirt cheap for the high quality, if you get the serrated version it becomes almost a folding do all blade that fits in your pocket and is hardly noticeable. Tanto tip shape can be used for piercing, scraping, impromptu screw driver, the secondary tip is wicked snap cuts and fine incising work or just if you need to say "pop" something open, at least three inches of sharp plain cutting edge for slicing and fine carving, will also definitely do some slashsing BU not quite as sheer as the flat grind, the serrations make short work of rope heavy plastic ties rubber etc the thickness and shape of the blade with that partial hollow grind is like a freaking pry bar almost especially with the triad lock. For about $50 you NEED to have one of these in your bug out bag camping pack or in your pocket

I've needed to ask, how's the durability of the AUS-8 steel in this knife? Is this treatment process of the steel like how SOG does theirs to AUS-8? @WeAllJuggleKnives yeah, lol. If they just fixed the stiffness of the Tri-Ad Lock and redesigned the pocket clip and smoothed out the area under the clip, they would be my #1 favorite knife company, hands down. You shouldn't have to modify a folding knife straight from the factory because it is has those kinds of issues :/

It's smart of them to list the blade length that way, cause in some states(such as mine), police are supposed to measure the full blade length, not just the sharpened portion. Not to say all cops will(most I know will measure to the handle, if they really feel like measuring at all, they generally won't if you're not acting suspicious or weird or whatever). This way, if you buy a 5.5 inch knife to be Texas legal, you won't be surprised when 5.5 turns into 5.6 and becomes an "illegal knife".

@WeAllJuggleKnives
@WeAllJuggleKnives 9 жыл бұрын
NJ 12 Gauge I pretty much believe that a person should carry a fixed blade with a 4-4.5 inch long blade, if they are legally able to. So, I'd choose the Perrin over the Voyager. I'm not against multiple blades though, this Voyager fits well if clipped inside the side knee cargo pocket on cargo pants.

Regarding the question, I don't think price should be any obstacle between the two blades. Yes, the Street Bowie is more expensive, but at $86-or-so on Amazon (or even less), the price increase isn't that much ... and certainly not when one considers the higher end VG-10 steel, and that super-light fixed blade goodness. Living in Portland, Oregon, a knife-friendly city, I carry multiple blades, with a typical load-out made up of the Street Bowie in a front, horizontal carry (with handle towards my center-line), a Cold Steel Hold Out XL, Counter Point XL, or Pentagon II Elite in right corner pocket, and a SOG Flash II Tanto in my rear pocket. Also a practitioner of FMA for the past two-plus decades, I'm looking forward to getting duplicates of several knives for double daga use. But why the multiple carry? There's many reasons. Of course, there's always the risk of flying a knife upon deployment, or otherwise losing a blade. In such cases, there's too much risk (during battle) to retrieve such a loss. Better, instead, to draw a secondary or tertiary weapon. Often, in training, one's facing a training partner, which favors a practitioner's strong-hand. In reality, though, one might be attacked from the rear, or right or left sides. Having blades available for right or left hand offers a strong advantage. Still ... to pack all dem blades? Really? Yes, really. In my case, I'm disabled, use a walker, and am transit dependent. If something were to ever go down, I'm going to have to stand my ground. I'm simply incapable of running. Blades are age-friendly, and handicap-friendly. If one has the strength of a 10-year-old, then one can very well pull a trigger, or use sharp steel, and let the tool do the work. In my case, I prefer edged weapons, because there's less chance of something horrible happening were I to miss a target. Bullets don't just stop when one misses. (Make no mistake, I love guns, too.). Nor are blades my only option. I often carry an aluminum knife trainer as well, which does double-duty as an impact weapon, as well as having a Datu Kelly Worden designed travel wrench attached to my walker. With the Voyager series, I have the Vaquero, the Tanto XL, and the Clip Point, and love all three, and have rotated them as part of my load. Back to the Street Bowie, it's gorgeous, simple, just under four ounces (which is crazy light), and around half the price of its beautiful but smaller progenitor, the Street Beat. Lots of factors must be considered when talking about deployment. There are fast draw knives, carry positions, and sheathing systems, and slower draw ones. Weather carries an impact, because it dictates clothing worn. Are there gloves involved? Again, many factors. But all things being equal, a fixed blade is faster than a folder. In Portland, the laws are such, that fixed blades have to be visible. Easy-peezy. With my carry, my shirt is lifted over my Street Bowie, and certainly, if a person's looking, it's going to be that knife that will draw and probably lock in a person's tracking. Were that to happen, my folders might go unnoticed. For that matter, make no mistake, my gear is just that--gear. My blades are tools, not weapons. I'm the weapon. If a person gets fixated on my steel, goodie for me, for I'm comfortable empty-handed, too. Ultimately, for a weapons practitioner, experimentation is a must. Even for the casual user, playing around with different carry positions, and for different occasions and environments, is fundamental. Life is dynamic, and so, too, are the myriad ways in which our tools may need to come into play. Environmental/situational awareness is mandatory. As well as flexibility in how we traverse up-and-down the use of force scale. I'm happy to own some nice bowies, a Tai Pan, and a few other higher end knives, but with the Voyager series, a person is getting $100 retail blades, with arguably the best lock in existence, and at only half to even a third of the cost. That's a steal for decent steel. Rob M. Miller

My Tanto Cold Steel knife had a defective lock, and the knife closed on my finger and almost severed it off. I was practicing slashing on a banana tree and when I pulled the knife off the trunk of the banana tree it closed on my index finger and almost severed an inch below the nail. I suggest you test your knives by tapping it on a piece of wood using the blunt side to see if your lock is safe. I have always been a fan of cold steel and have several knives. The best are the straight ones, I cannot trust the locking system anymore. Sent them an email with pictures and a video of the knife failure, sad to say no reply.

The Tri-Ad lock is very difficult to disengage from my experience (Cold Steel Spartan, Cold Steel Recon 1). Secondly, that pocket clip is way TOO close to the handle. Not only that, but there is extremely aggressive texturing under the clip that will rip your pockets to shreds, I know, it has happened to me before. I've had to modify/bend my clips to avoid this, and sand down under the pocket clip for it not to rip my pants pocket. Wish Cold Steel would change this :/

You know, Cold Steel has a lot of cool stuff going on. I love their long, tactical blades (Espada series, Spartan, Rajah series, new Voyager series). I also love their new, very ergonomic handles, that allow you to use various grip positions. BUT, there are two things I have against Cold Steel, and that is why I don't buy their folders anymore unless they change up these issues- the extreme stiffness of the Tri-Ad lock AND the aggressive texturing under Cold Steel clips

Why does everyone complain about the triad lock stiffness id rather have it stiff then have it close on my fingers as specially with such large knives or heavy bladed knives. I never even gad that much trouble closing my spartan anyway. Mabe those of you that cant close it are just too weak to have such a massive knife.
