I would never do that to my baby folder cold steel...only maybe to fixed blades
@nathan_navaja7 жыл бұрын
First off, I just want to say I'm seriously impressed with this knife. The fact it's still pretty usable after all that is insane. Those tests would, and have killed a lot of fixed blades. You could actually reshape that blade and still use it. However... It's a clip point blade with distal taper, and a fairly thin tip. It's quite obvious if you start prying with it, it's gonna snap. It isn't the steel's fault, just how the geometry of the blade plays out. That thin edge not breaking chopping that concrete honestly amazed me. The lock never "failed", it simply developed horizontal play, and that's easily fixed. That's why your pivot screw is there, bud. If anything I feel even safer using my Cold Steel folders, and this serves to show how tough they really can be. Try to get your hands on a Recon 1 in Tanto point, or an SR1. I'd like to see you break those. 😉

True! First pound in the knife and stand on it...then do the tip test. Too bad he didn't have an older AUS8A knife. I've seen them pass the tip test.

I've always carried a folder most of my 46 yrs. Out of all the brands I've owned I'd say cold steel by far the best folders. And I don't think you can find a better knife for the cost. I own 3 of the Voyager models. Well only 2 now cause one my tanto Xl I dropped at work. Tried to recover it the next day but it vanished. and nobody at work is talking lol. No more guessing games for me I've found my brand.... Cold steel👍

Totally agree XL Voyager best knife for the money

Every knife will fail a 90 degree tip test if the blade fails to life the wood out of the plunge cut. There is also some basic physics at play here. Thinner tips will penetrate deeper into the wood medium thereby making it even more likely to break than a thick tip with shallower penetration. I have this same XL clip Voyager and the blade is the same thickness as the 4 inch model which, when coupled with the long distal tapered 5.25" flat ground makes for an excellent slicer and overall Outdoorsman folder. Thicker tips will lift the wood at the expense of less efficient cutting geometry.. Only you can decide if a sharpened crowbar is the right tool for you. For me the XL Voyager is the knife i reach for most often when heading out for a day hike into the woods or an outing in the Canoe.

Would you consider trying the same model again in tanto point? A much stronger tip.

How about testing the Voyager XL Tanto blade?
@21taters7 жыл бұрын
Horizontal blade play can easily be fixed by tightening up the pivot unless you put so much force on it you've stripped it or warped your liners and handle scales near the pivot. With a blade length that long for a folder most of the force will go there instead of the lock bar because of the triad lock, once again, fixable with a set of torx wrenches.

Hmmm. Do you think the old AUS8A blade would have failed as well? How about the BD1 tanto? That's a heavier knife and a thicker blade. I also prefer the tanto blade for self defense. (BTW, How many times did you have to throw that knife before it stuck in the board?)

Wish you would've tried tightening the pivot... It also makes no sense to try to break the tip before the tests that require penetration during the test. Breaking the tip should be last as obviously that design won't have a tough tip. I still have doubts about the lock failing. I think it was a loose pivot.

very nice test. I have a XL voyager and large clippoint they are great. the xl is my folding chef knife. you need to get your hands on a XL tanto. I believe it is a little thicker. ( 4mm) and thick all the way to the point. it would probably do a lot better in the couple areas where yours failed. plus it looks like a folding pocket samurai sword!

Tough test for a folder, yes, but it gives us an idea of how strong and durable the knife is. Tip test is always very useful, love to see the tip tests. I don't see the tip test in itself as a measure of the quality of steel, it takes the entire test to do that, but I feel like even a thin tip should have held up a lot better. It's not just the type of steel. The purity (quality of ingredients and mixture itself) of the steel and its treatment and hardening, go along way as far as blade and tip strength. I feel like something in the steel or the process of the manufacture of this steel could be tweaked to result in a much stronger tip (even though its thin). When you look at the micro fractures in combination with the broken tip, it makes me think the steel is a few points harder than it should be. Otherwise, I think the knife did very well for a folder.
@scroonie7 жыл бұрын
I thought it was a great test....really shows what the knife can and can't handle. I've had a Voyager (large) in aus 8 and I loved it. I passed on to my bro-in-law and his daily use is like your destruction tests and it's still held up after all these years. Maybe a face shield for tip tests next time 😃 Overall great test...thanks

@MickyMouseLimited7 жыл бұрын
Good test . In my books this folding knife did great for what it is. You are correct on tip thickness and steel . The tip is to thin and the steel is to hard and brittle . Normally we all know that hardness of the knife improve edge retention but it damages the durability.

I had the 4 inch version, same CTS-BD1 steel. The tip broke off about 1/4 of an inch while removing a staple from a shipping box. Cold Steel triad locks are strong, but I seriously think their steel has bad quality control. Don't believe me, just google "cold steel fail". I still carry my 6 inch blade Ti-Lite though, love this folding dagger!!!

Stabbed the Voyager large CP into wood, pulled it out, the tip was bent slightly. Bent it back with little force. Snap ! That escalated quickly as well. As in your video. Very delicate tip. Very thin. Good penetration , but... Too weak, bending the tip back shouldn't have made it snap. It was a slight bend. A tip that thin profits from being a little less brittle.

Maybe this destructive test should be modified for the folding knife. It would be interesting to see how the Recon 1 XL does, but save the tip test for the end, if it must be done. Clip points are just not going to do as well with lateral stress.

the more brittle the steel, the sharper the edge and better the retention. the softer the steel, the more flexible it is, and easier it is to sharpen. finding a good balance is the knifemakers art. if cold steel wanted to make a knife you could stand on, or bend the point around, im sure they would have made a hammer or decent butter knife. these tests are interesting, however, its like watching somebody use a screwdriver to hammer nails. wrong tests for the wrong tools.

Interesting. Cold steel did a knife test of one of its own folders with the Italian Extrema Ratio Rao and guess what, the Cold steel knife prevailed. Now you show that the lateral stress is not handled by the otherwise bomb-proof triad lock so well in this particular design. In the test by Cold steel, the Rao also held a lot of weight before the lock gave up. But only lock strength was tested. Now if you could do a test of this special Extrema Ratio Rao folder, it would be more informative than the simple vertical force test of the lock, as this is closer to a real abuse the knife has to take. I would be happy if I could see such a review. I believe that both knives are good in similar circumstances. But the test was biased on a particular aspect. I.e not real-life use. Handling comfort, weight, lock strength, style, fit and finish, price should also be considered.
