Since recording this footage in July 2020 I have been made aware that the field this bunker is in is on private property. I was unaware of that at the time of the visit, so will not be disclosing the location and will not be returning. Please always respect boundaries, and seek permission from landowners.
This ROC (Royal Observer Corps) post was opened in 1962 and closed in 1968.
ROC post bunkers were built between 1956 and 1965, by the UK government. There were over 1,500 underground bunkers like this around the UK, all of which had exactly the same design.
They were designed and commissioned in response to the threat of nuclear war. In the event of strike, they would provide space for 3 personnel to measure nuclear blast waves and radioactive fallout.
Today, most posts lie derelict, abandoned, and vandalised. Approximately half of the ROC posts built have been demolished, either by the ROC or by private landowners.
