🇸🇪After the Second World War, Sweden was in urgent need of modern tanks. Their current medium tank, the strv m/42, was horribly outdated, being armed with a short-barreled 75 mm gun. The Swedish military was certainly impressed by French AMX-13’s and considered buying them, but eventually they concluded that their armor was too weak to fulfill their needs, along with several other flaws pointed out by General Swedlund. The deal with the French was cut-off and the Swedes eventually decided to buy the British Centurion, which offered significantly better protection against nuclear weapons and conventional weapons.
However, the need for a light tank still persisted. Designing a completely new tank would take too long, around seven years, so instead the Swedes chose to reuse the chassis of the wartime strv m/42.

A long standing joke in Sweden: strv 74 is the only tank that can hide behind a telephone pole and fire over it at the same time.

I imagine at least a couple of Swede generals looking at Stridsvagn 74 being a linchpin of their defense were silently dreaming of days when Sweden's best defense was a few small armies of well-drilled infantry and artillery proactively operating on the far side of the Baltic, locking down the great powers in places like Pomerania and Courland. Seems much simpler than trying to defend Sweden proper against large mechanized armies in the 20th century.

It deserves a special mention of your pronunciation of the Swedish names. While it under no circumstance would pass as native, any Swede would understand what is being said which is not the case with a lot of the videos covering Swedish armour. Impressive! As a member, I'd like to point out that the stridsvagn 74 in Boden is owned by "Föreningen P5", slight misspelling there. "Vagn" for some reason is commonly mispronounced as "wagen", while a close approximation in English would be "vang-n"". "lvkan" is the abbreviation of "LuftVärnsKANon", air-defence cannon. Over all, just minor details of improvement, this was great work!

i would like to add to the video that there is also a version of the strv 74 that had 4 mounted RB74 anti-tank guided missiles. Of what I know it was only a prototype but a really cool one

Strange vehicle, a WWII's hull with a new turret employed until the early '80s, I think that these crews were lucky for not have ever fought with it against modern tanks, its armour was really thin!

I saw the model of the Strv 74 at the American Armored Foundation Museum in Danville, Virginia back in October of 2018. I was so delighted to see a rare Swede like it. I even have a video that has it included. But that’s only for those who wish to explore. But do go check out the AAF Museum if you want to see this rarity of a vehicle.

excellent video Tank Encyclopedia ❤. I would like a video about the M64, a Taiwanese tank from the 60s, with a M42 SPAA chassis, turret and cannon from the TD M18, and why they didn't buy the M41 directly, being more effective

They had M41s, but I think they just wanted to make use of the old M18 turrets and M42 chassis

For rather obvious reasons buying any foreign equipment is never a straightforward process for Taiwan. The M64 came about becuase Taiwan could not just buy vehicles, had a supply of worn out M18 hulls and a supply of obsolete but not worn out M42's.

I'm not so sure if there are any strv m/42 had their own jagdtiger styled casemates being made during ww2, before getting the 74 modification.

Nonetheless, this tank was completely inadequate by the Cold War standards. It lacked in armour protection and anti-tank capabilities be used effectively in combat. Its 75mm gun would be completely ineffective against rival tanks, such as the T-54/55 series as well as enemy fortifications. This is a tank built by mid-WW2 standards and would perform on a battlefield respectively.

not really, you'd be surprised how often that happens. besides, *just* 1.5 tons additional for an armored vehicle is wishful thinking, simple sideskirts weigh more than that
