Many anglers have heard about Living Rubber skirt material for jigs and how they are great for cold water. Today we put this to the test and look at living rubber and silicone jig skirts underwater. Is there a difference? Are these jigs better for cold-water bass fishing? Let's find out.

Man your channel should have TEN TIMES the subscribers it has. It is SO actually informative and without any garbage self promotion and stalling filler to get more ads in. Keep it up Steve and you’re going to BLOW UP ! You, Matt Stefan, and Tactical Bassing are the best/ most informative channels out there. Matt from TB can be long winded though 😂

I liked the fact you chose two different styles of "bulky" skirts. This made it easier to see the difference when fish might want a smaller presentation vs , a larger one. Thank you

Steve, love your videos! I have a question about live rubber skirts. I have a bunch of Mop jigs from Buckeye . I don’t fish them much . The rubber seems heavy to me or, is it just me? And are these more spring time or would you fish these skirts year round?
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 5 ай бұрын
The rubber definitely seems a little heavier, I agree. Traditionally, a lot of anglers use them when the water is cooler, but I am going to experiment with them all year this season. Especially when the bite is tough and I want to leave them sit longer. I really like how responsive that rubber is to very slight movement.
@Boethius411
@Boethius411 5 ай бұрын
Living rubber is available in more colors now than you could get in the past, but those printed patterns on silicon sure are pretty. Lol I like to hand tie my jigs and use a mix of both. Best of both worlds. Not necessarily the best thing in cold water, but you can really bulk up a jig by layering one over the other. I tend to use less strands of both in cold water but still tie in some living rubber. Sometimes too much movement is a very bad thing in super cold and clear water. Gotta keep that in mind too.

@@SteveRogersOutdoors it definitely adds something special to it. First fish I hooked on my own lure hooked me too. Lol… that first one was so ugly I was embarrassed to tie it on, but man did it work. My real passion is actually building custom wood lures. Would be glad to hook you up with something real cool if you’re interested. I got a lot better at making them pretty too. Lol

That living rubber jig really looked like a crayfish. Are they active when it’s that cold? Remember when I say cold I’m from SE Michigan. Thanks Steve.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 5 ай бұрын
They don't actually hibernate like is often assumed. They will bury up in mud, but will emerge when some sun gets on the water. Even if it is just the shallows warming up. They start to get much more active when that water is hitting the upper 40s.
@DrGargani
@DrGargani 5 ай бұрын
I have found that in really cold water, less is more, and the fish don't want to see a lot of action, so, I personally don't think the living rubber being more "alive" would necessarily be an advantage IN VERY COLD WATER......as the water begins to heat up, that phenomena will reverse itself.
@SteveRogersOutdoors

Thanks for sharing all this. It will definitely be interesting to keep investigating as the water warms up here.

How can you tell the difference between to two when looking at them? Is it the feel of them?
@SteveRogersOutdoors

Great question. Most of the rubber skirt material will have round strands while the silicone is flat and the rubber strands are usually one solid color. They do feel different as well.

Funny story. When I was a kid ice fishing with my dad and grandpa on the backwaters of the Mississippi, we would all kind of naturally spread out over the day and my bucket would soon be all alone away from their buckets. One time I heard a deep cracking sound, freaked out, and ran back to the cabin. Left the bucket and everything. Now, as an adult, I realize the ice was getting thicker, but as a kid, I thought I was doomed to fall through. Have not spent much time ice fishing since. Lol. Deep scar from that day.
