I just learned the interpretation of this song and it makes me so sad. The song is about Rosaline of Damascene (Damascus, Syria) who went "indigo up in heaven" in the bombings led by US, UK, France in 2018. Baba is her father who's also killed. There's also a reference to angels in Arabic mythology and so on. Thank you Coldplay for your beautiful tribute to Rosaline and her Baba. 💞😔

Fully agree. I really disliked their disco type of songs as "a sky full of stars" or even Paradise, which is just a "styleless" pop song. I am happy that they are trying to get back to their original unique sounding.

“Orphans”, tackles the Syrian cold war, more specifically the Damascus bombing of 2018. It showcases the story of a girl (Rosaleem) and her Baba (Persian for father) who died and are now met by the archangels who talk to them about their passing to the world of the dead. :(

Yeah I know what U mean. A lot of people see this as sort of a sad song (that’s its meaning) But before I knew the meaning of all of the lyrics and only focused on the refrain (the I wanna know part) I saw this song as a source of hope for the future. I was in a musical where I made a lot of meaningful friendships and that got cut short due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. I was super sad and during my time at home (social distancing) I saw a re-run of this the SNL episode where Coldplay performs this song and I realized that all I could associate this song with was the musical, as I had recently found out that the show was possibly being brought back somewhere in early 2021. I know this isn’t necessarily the meaning to this song Coldplay had in mind, but that’s how I feel whenever I listen to this song, and even though this song has some sad and depressing lyrics, it ends on a very moving and uplifting note. Thanks to Coldplay for making such a great song

How beautiful is this song But the amazing thing is that how Martin directly references the 2018 bombings of Damascus, the capital of Syria. It showcases how the attack orchestrated by the US, UK, and France caused several casualties, between those, a girl named Rosaleen and her Baba (Arabic for father). They are labeled as Damascene which refers to someone who is an inhabitant of the city of Damascus. The song also comment on the inherent beauty of the city of Damascus and the Arabian culture, and how everything got lost after the war. And also Cherub and Seraphim are a pair of arch-angles. It is believed that they meet people once they die, or in this case, get killed, to either assure or warn them. The lines metaphorically showcase the religious belief of being closer to God when you die with more good deeds. It shows how Rosaleen and her father are now in heaven guarded by these angels.

Listening to the words and actually taking them in, is powerful. Chris Martin is a lyrical mastermind, portrays such a tragedy with his words and soul. This songs celebrates life as well highlights the tragedy’s within it.

I love the way this song flows and the ways they put the lyrics together. The vocals truly have life and express very real emotions, this is why Coldplay in my opinion is just so great and really breaks the mold of modern music while staying relevant

I love this song so much. It's so uplifting in the beat yet so tragic in its story as it retells of lives lost to bombings and war in the Middle East. I think the west, especially the US needs more things like this, as a reminder that the everyone over there are people too, with hopes, dreams and lives of their own, caught in the crossfire of political and physical warfare.

I really felt the song after i realized it was about people who died in bombings in Syria led by the US,UK and France in 2018. The most painful lyric to me is when she asks, "I want to know when i can go back and be young again?" Because they just took that from her, we just took that from her, because we're not standing up for people like her. I love Coldplay so much!

Ok this is making me tear up. It’s reminding me of my true childhood where I would skip school and go to the park with my dad or long drives in the car with my family, driving down south in my booster seat and talking to my brothers that weren’t on their phones. I’m from Australia so I just remember seeing beautiful landscapes and sitting on the beach watching the sunsets. I’m going to miss 2000s - 2010s a lot! To whoever to their time to read this please have a nice day and be kind to your family if any problems have been happening! :)
