The ultimate post apocalyptic stove! You know what shocks me given how long the multi fuel stoves have been around, and there isn't head to head tests, cocktails, recipes on different fuels... Imagine trying to use heavier fuels like paraffin/kerosene/diesel in Canada where these things may not be liquid all year around... Rubbing alcohol... Gee along the post apocalyptic theme, I would have thought ethanol would be the ubiquitous solvent easy to make... But we have what we have. Glad someone did some tests,

Thank you for the comment! I just returned from Canada. You guys have so much wood out there, so you don't need any other fuel :) Stove like this one is ideal for camping or some emergency use, like power outages due to storm or for the first months of SHTF (which is coming I guess). But then we'll have to switch to wood anyway.

In order for the alcohol to work the fuel jet orifice would need to be twice as big as the gasoline or Coleman fuel orifice just as if pure alcohol is used in a car. That might be an interesting experiment as well. I drilled out the gas orifice to twice the size in my MSR Whisperlite International and with a draft control on the air intake can run alcohol in that stove very well. I brazed a handle on the draft control so I can adjust the amount of air and can still fold the stove up as normal. I got a valve and hose off of a cheap butane stove and can run butane as well as kerosene, jet fuel, et. al. Thanks for the experiment here. I guess I won't be running alcohol in my Coleman one burner stove.

I have one of these that I ran on a 50:50 mix of old gas and varsol (mineral spirits). It smelled a bit but it burned cleanly and very hot. These are virtually identical to the 508 stoves and use the same generators. I have both and they are equal as far as I have seen. If I run gasoline I always add a couple of tbsp of seafoam to the tank and when done and putting it into storage I like to run carb cleaner through it for a minute and then follow with coleman fuel. A little bit of maintenance and these things will literally last decades with no repairs needed.

I'll bet you could make an adapter for the fill hole and feed propane to use as another fuel alternative. My dad used to have a Coleman duel fuel 3 burner stove, and he had an adapter that I'm not sure if he bought it or made custom, but we used propane, and that gas was already pressurized from the propane tank.

I've burned various fuels in pressurized stoves and it took a bit to understand which jet orifice would give the best results to match the BTU of the fuel. I have a 533 and it's a fixed jet size, so it's picky. To burn kerosene in a Coleman I watched a video by a fellow who wrapped the generator with solid copper wire from household wiring to increase the preheat mass. He was able to get the flame under control all the way down to a simmer. That was pretty impressive.

I have had to buy 3 generators in the last 3 months running on unleaded petrol and try as I might with all sorts of methods you cannot clean them out. From new and after about 10 times it starts to play up and by 15 times it's clogged. The thin wire that goes through it becomes solid, I managed to free one of the wires up but it still won't light. I contacted Coleman to complain and they said I should use Coleman fuel every third time which was news to me. I'm loath to buy any more at £23.00 per item. Coleman fuel is far too expensive so beware if you're using unleaded petrol.

I have seen different results on a different video, but then you were using Coleman Premium Blend fuel and the other guy was using just regular old can of Coleman Camping Fuel and also a fresh can of Crown White Gas. His water boiled quickest with low octane gasoline. What I was most impressed with was that it took significantly LESS Coleman Premium Blend Fuel to do the job. Gasoline fumes more making it more dangerous. I camped for 3 months with a single burner white gas stove, cooking for just myself, and never even used a whole gallon of the white gas.

I think those using gasoline should really use a fuel stabiliser. These are about £7 or €10 a bottle and stop the varnish action of fuel going bad over time. It’s really the fuel in the generator that is clogging up when it cools. Fuel stabilisers (the stuff used in portable power generators) gives petrol or gasoline a shelf life of up to 2 years. Ordinary gasoline (petrol) can varnish and coat the generator inside a month. I can give you a cast iron guarantee that Coleman fuel just has fuel stabilisers and a small amount of detergent and less ethanol. Here in the UK we have E10 and E5. Coleman fuel may be as little as E1 or 1% ethanol.

@@tallyrc Kerosene is more flammable than disel. Flammability is determined by the flash point of a material. This means that the flash point is the minimum temperature at which a liquid forms a vapor above its surface in sufficient concentration that it can be ignited. Kerosene holds a flash point of 100°F and an auto-ignition temperature of 428°F. Diesel holds a flash point of 126 °F and an auto-ignition temperature of 493 °F. As long as there's priming fuel the alcohol stove will stay lit but without primer fuel it quickly goes out. What I currently do is every 5-6 minutes I'll turn it up so far that liquid fuel comes out of the nozzle again so first there's a big big flame and then the priming cup fills I turn at back down and it'll work again for 5 minutes. The setting: A grade school classroom somewhere in Kansas. Let's say, Wichita. Ok settle down kids, settle down, we have to watch this video of a nice man lighting a little stove on different fuels. WOW, I know it DOES sound dangerous. Oh that brand looks familiar. What do you kids think he should do first? That's right, Jimmy, read the instructions. Hmmm. Well that's strange. He...he .... doesn't seem to be following the instructions. They're right there, I wonder why he doesn't read them. I don't know either. Do you see the instructions mister directly in front of you by the valve and fuel cap? Yes, right... here, Stacy, it's a movie. He can't hear you or see you go sit down now. Silly girl. What direction should the lever be when LIGHTing? That's right Jimmy? Correct. The LIGHT position. What can happen if its not, Jimmy? Right again, you can have trouble lighting it. Here's a tricky one. What should you do right after the stove lights, Jimmy? Right again! Pump another 30 pumps of air into the tank. Why do we do that? Correct! Jimmy you're doing amazing. Yes it's to replenish the air from the instant lighting procedure so the stove doesn't lose power and go out while cooking. Why didn't the guy in the video turn the stove on high for the fastest boil? That's a hard one, huh? I don't know either, Jimmy. I mean, he's just doing a boil time test. What was he thinking? Never mind, we can't know for sure, can we. That would be called conjecture. How did he empty all the fuel out. This one's extra credit. That's right Jimmy, you can't just pour it all out because of the filler port design that ensures the rignt amount of space in the tank for air to be pumped. GOOD! What do you think the nice man in the video should have done, Jimmy? I think that's a great idea, Jimmy, yes he should have read the instructions. But where can he find the instruciton? Remember, we covered this at the beginning......Jimmy again? Wow, right again, in the original packaging and ON THE SIDE OF THE STOVE. Jimmy, how did you know all the right answers today you got them all right. I see, you read the instructions, well that would explain it. So what did we all learn today children? RTFIM Read The Fu(&ing Intruction Manual. Oh MY children. We don't need to use THAT word, ever. Where did you learn that horrible word? I see. I'll have to have a talk with this Mike Morgan fella...... Have a super weekend.

Don't take me too seriously, I'm too OCD for KZfaq and know quite a bit about Coleman stoves. Hope you find it funny. Still worthwhile. I would have bet against it staying lit on alcohol without a bigger jet or throttling the air intake. Cool! Kerosene will run with a good preheat, but not so well on low or full high. The sweet spot is about 75 percent from my experience with JP-8. The low octane and Coleman fuel should have been nearly identical, but I don't know the pump gas quality or additive packages where you got yours. Good to see it running on all these. Here's a link to explain why you light Coleman stoves on high/light. King Coleman show how instant lighting works and the valve is nearly identical, though it looks a little different, the fuel and air tube are the same. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbqhes6Xmsu5gpc.html
