Coleman Powermate generators have a board that rectifies and smooths out the power sent to the rotor brushes. These boards are known to fail, usually the capacitor or diodes short and burn a trace or joint, but they can also fail due to fatigue or vibration. This is how to diagnose and repair them.

Excellent vid. Allowed me to quickly fix my generator. Looks like either the capacitor went bad, then fried the board, or the board circuit became de-laminated and fried the capacitor. Not sure which came first. Found a nice American made replacement on fleabay for $35.

Thank you for taking the time to help us with this. Mine is working but only getting 104 volts at 3600 RPMs. Going to pull the rec and see if I see anything.

thank you a lot a buddy gave me a 5500 watt that looks so new the paint aint burnt off the exhaust. he said he ran it a couple times and it has set for 4 years and when he started it there was no electricity. I am going to look into the generator tomorrow. I drained the gas but had no spark at the engine plug. I sanded the magnets and magneto on the engine and fired it up. but I will look at the rectifier board tomorrow. Thanks again for the comments and video.

Hi, thanks for great video, but unfortunately my problem stays there. Generator not giving any power, wen I opened board found capacitor burned ( bubbles up). I resolder all new diodes and capacitor ( test with multimeter before) but still no power on the plug (around 8v) and nothing on the brushes same 8v. Can you please give advice what to check next, and maybe how to check coil on motor. Thanks in advance!

6:53 hi. Great video thank you. I have a slight problem with new connector. My gen has 2 connectors and the new board only has the small twin connector. I have the pigtail kit but don’t know what to rewire. Please help.

should have showed how to recharge the capacitor as that's a common issue itself is that it just need to be jumped if it sits in storage for a long time. pair of wires to the brushes and a battery does it it easy. some people hook a drill up and spin it by hand while pulling the trigger most replacement boards have a new style connector. if the generator is a old model, sometimes you have to replace the connector. some kits include a new connector to crimp on. also the upgraded capacitor is bigger and might need a hole made to fit the board in properly. unfortunately the Powermate generator i found had a shorted winding. it instantly shorted the capacitor and jumping the capacitor with a batter would only let it power around 50v so it was trash. but i learned alot from it

I think I've had one of these that just needed a reflash, the rest had rectifier board issues. But 99% of the generators I get come from the inflatable industry, so sitting isn't something they're familiar with. Some models don't even have the board, they use a separate bridge rectifier and capacitor, which is the heavy duty way to do it. The capacitor's only purpose is to smooth out the ripple from the rectifier. Residual magnetism in the rotor is what allows the exciter winding to begin functioning and supply current to the rectifier circuit and the brushes/ rotor. The windings of the rotor will bleed off any charge left in the capacitor when it's not running.

I have one of those 2 cycle China generators that runs great but once I flash it with the drill, it quickly loses its power to run the drill. I had the 12 uf capacitor tested and was told it was good. Can a diode bridge rectifier cause this problem?

I'm not familiar with those. You can test most of the components with a multimeter but IME it tends to be all or nothing with rectifiers.

HI. Nice video. I have a Husky 5000/6500 that looks to be the same setup as your coleman. My gen is experience the same thing. Runs but no power. I WAS think it was an AVR. But I don't seem to see it on my unit. I'm wondering if this rectifier would be taking the place of the AVR? I followed all of your directions on checking the board. I'm thinking possibly this board. Does your Colman Gen have an AVR?

AVR is Automatic voltage regulator. Many generators don't have them including this one.

@@pfun41 thanks. you've helped greatly. I have been looking for this AVR and do not see one. Thought I was over looking. I'll be getting a new board. By your video using my volt meter. Looks like the diodes are fried.

My generator starts and works perfectly when connected to an ac but after 10-15 ac shuts down but the generators stays on. Those that has to do with this part? should i change it? thank you

Unlikely, these tend to be an all or nothing piece.

Hi, very interesting video, I'm starting on a Coleman 4000 " commercial" from the '80s. Here in Argentina, inflatables are run with an extension chord , why is that in USA you use generators ? Thanks a lot !!!

There might be an issue with the generator head itself.

where is this board located? I removed the black shield around the electric motor and only see a large capacitor, a breaker, and the outlet..

You have a different, likely older style generator head. This one has a separate outlet panel. I don't know much about those I'm afraid.

What if I have power on the brushes, could the board still be bad? I have power on the brushes put I have none on the main plug .

Possible, but I'd suspect something else first. Your brushes could be worn out, Ive also seen the wire on the rotor itself break. Then there is always the possibility of an issue in the outlet panel. You need to test the output windings, and the rotor itself.

I put new new brushes in it and when I test on the screws on the brushes I got 135 on it . But when I test on the panel plug I have nothing . So testing the rotor and stator are next, any ideas on how that’s done? Thanks

@@larrycraig7490 test the rotor, see if it's open circuit. Disconnect one of the brushes when you do it.

I have one that I put a new board in, ran it for about an hour or two, then the board went out again. What would make it go bad that soon?

@@rashorb The only way the generator could have killed it is if its pushing too much power/current through it, but I don't see that being likely. There are however tons of poor quality aftermarket parts out there. Have you tested anything to see what failed on it?

@pfun41 I found that 4 of the 8 diodes were bad.
