Colin Stetson's latest album redefines the saxophone in an avant-garde context. His drones, motifs, and highly technical sax runs are undeniably gripping and beautiful. Not every piece here may sound completely fleshed out, but the technical ability shown throughout the album is more than enough to distract from that extremely minor problem.
My Brightest Diamond and Laurie Anderson even show up for vocal duty on a good chunk of this album, too; bringing a new depth to the experimental nature of this album.
I guess I have to warn y'all, though. This album is music that's meant to be observed. It's nothing to party to, that's for sure. But while it may not be upbeat or "catchy," it's still a really unique experience--even in light of jazz titans like Roland Kirk and Ornette Coleman.
What do you think of this LP? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

this album is beyond music, it's an intrinsic audible translation of immortality. I give this album a strong 10.

The circulatory breathing technique is what didgeridoo players use to keep the drone forever. Nice Rahsaan Roland Kirk reference by the way.

This is indeed an exciting release -- thanks for the pointer, Anthony! For those interested in solo saxophone playing in an avantgarde context, I suggest artists like Evan Parker, John Butcher, James Fei and especially Anthony Braxton with whom Stetson has already performed. Braxton's vast catalogue contains at least a dozen solo albums, beginning with his classic "For Alto". His influence on solo sax music can hardly be overestimated.

This album kind of has an epic feel to it, in my opinion. The song "Judges" slowly builds up into this haunting piece that makes me want to keep on listening to this album. Thanks for the review Anthony, I'll always appreciate what you do :-)

Excellent review. I don’t know if I love or adore this album, but I certainly am fascinated by it. Provided you are a jazz fan, you must appreciate the progression in sound. Possibly I felt at times I was returning to a Prog rock scene or Return to Forever jazz extravaganza that I might not be so wanting to return to. However, we must find it necessary to shove these pre-conceptions out of the way so as to listen to what appears to be at least an idiomatic Revolution in music. I just wonder what Evan Parker might think about Collin.

I have no memory if i commented on this before, but if i haven't then i totally have to say that this album was like a gateway drug for me into avant garde jazz type music, and with the skill and technique and the story he tells through the music, i have to give it a 10/10

Hey man, thanks for doing this. I got into music alot later than most people and I sometimes feel I have alot of catching up to do, so it's great when I find these videos of people who clearly know alot about music and truly love it talk about it so I can understand a little better. Your attitude is amazing and I really enjoy watching your videos for the style and delivery as well as for your thoughtful opinions.

In the jazz tradition that Colin comes from, reed instruments like saxophone are called horns. That's why he describes himself as a horn player. Brass instruments do not have reeds though...
