Sometimes you get the option to dig great material for bonsai from a garden. How do you collect an elm from a garden for bonsai. Not really yamadori collection, but at least gardendory!

Elms are amazingly tough. I cut off the bottom of a cork bark elm's rootball when I repotted it, and instead of disposing of the disk of roots I'd removed, I potted it up to see what would happen. 60+ trunks popped up, which I reduced to 11 for a forest planting. I'm gradually removing the surface soil to expose the connected root structure to illustrate that it's not a typical forest planting, but a true "kabudachi." The last time I repotted this forest, I again cut off the bottom of the root ball and potted it, and now have another kabudachi forest planting in development. This all started from an air layer, so it's a third generation clone.

I really like that you show all your work. Not just things that worked well and are perfect but also the failings and imperfect parts of bonsaing. Please keep going😏

Thank you for letting me know. I feel that people sometimes get down because of mistakes and they watch videos and .. all they see is success. But of course, everywhere things sometimes do not work out!

Yeah, youtube has an annoying interface for timing. The AM/PM setting is akward and I sometimes do not pay enough attention. I think this is the third or forth middle-of-the-night posting for me. Ah well. Breakfast watching I suppose. :)

Hi Jelle, about the root stump cutting that didn't make it, this year I started bagging--not just covering--my cuttings. (Putting the cuttings and pot down into the clear bag, and wiring the the top closed.) Amazed at the success rate. But watch out for mold, which I treat by brushing on 3% hydrogen peroxide. Thanks for the great content!

Great tip! I know I should have, but I was lazy and it was cold and dark by the time I finished potting up!

Nice to see how this turned out. I'm pleased to say all of last years dig trees happily survived. But having seen this video I am definitely going to leave my chinese elm in the gorund for a few more years and let it develop a decent trunk and base. Maybe recover it in 2025???

When you are prunning big roots like that, are you worried about the rot on the open fleshwound? Doing anything to minimize the risk of it apart from trying yourbest to make the cut clean (sharper tools than in this vid :D )
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 10 ай бұрын
Normally, no. A fit tree will health those wounds over. It is of course not great for the tree!

Those will become something great! Dull tools or not... Seems the only thing that had no growth was the thing you cut with a sharp saw... 🤔
