I take an ordinary Portentilla shrub and arrange the branches and plant it in a plastic pot to create a bonsai. I do the same with a Berbers tree.

First - thank you. Your videos are both relaxing and informative, and I appreciate both. I've played about with some ficus, mainly because I was given one of those sad grocery-store specimens in a plastic flower pot with epoxy and pebbles on top. I discovered almost accidentally how easy the cuttings are to root, and got hooked. I have bound together fresh cuttings stuck in florist foam which was places over a globular glass bottle, I hope to break the bottle out from the roots and plant higher, resulting in a cavity into which I can place a stone, and last year rooted some in the underside of a hanging basket (planting annual flowers in the top) - they are growing nicely "downwards" and in Spring I will invert the plant into a new pot, hopefully resulting in some interesting shapes without using wire at all. You inspire me to keep trying different methods. Once again, thank you.

Peter, that is an extraordinarily friendly Robin. It's worked out that it can trust you and is behaving completely naturally. You could train it to come to your hand by providing live mealworm. They can be bought in small tubs from a shop that sells lizards, or snakes.

Watch it, mr Chan: reading the comments, this robin might take it over...! Regarding the Potentilla (fruticosa), I couldn't agree more. I have two of them left in my own collection (sold one) and meanwhile, quite some years of experience with it. They come indeed with bright yellow flowers and orange and also with white flowers. It is an extremely strong and tolerant plant and it can even overcome a bit of frost in a small bonsaï pot (allthough in that case, some protection would be wise). I adore them and even now, at this very moment, I'm growing a few more in my garden for future bonsaï projects. Potentilla has quite a few advantages for bonsaï projects, allthough also a few disadvantages. Perhaps this could be helpfull for my fellow bonsaï enthusiasts: Advantages: - simply: they are cheap and easy to get and, of course, very colourfull - they are very strong and very tolerant for any kind of pruning: roots, branches, leafs and can easily bare frost conditions and sunny and less sunny conditions (but they like enough water!) - they are very tolerant regarding the soil mixture allthough it must be said: never let them dry out. They warn you with hanging little branches and leafs... - even when they are still very young, their trunks allready look very old (an important advantage for bonsaï, of course) - the leafs are very fine and small and thus helps to get the effect of an older tree - they do make a lot of flowers easily (allthough the flowers are relatively large, compared with the size of the leafs) - they are also very suitable for shohin and even mame (the very little ones) bonsaï: in that case, you could reach a very satisfying effect relatively quickly - also very suitable for klump style (kabudachi)! Disadvantages: - the trunk does not thicken easily. My advice would be to plant it in your garden for a year, from time to time for example, and furtilize it additionally. That helps. Don't start pruning too soon, just let it grow strong, as mr Chan always tells us - relatively fast, you can't wire and bent the trunk anymore: it simply becomes to stiff quite soon - if you really want to stimulate the growth of the trunk, branches and leaves, you should cut the flowers or at least a lot of them. That leads all the energy to where you want to see growth. You should certainly cut the flowers after flowering: then it wants to make seeds and puts a lot of energy in that - it's true: if you want to grow a "respectable" or somewhat larger bonsaï potentilla tree, you should be patient and perhaps you should grow it in your garden first, for example for a few years. In that case, you could choose one, two ore perhaps tree branches and get rid of the others, just to stimulate the thickening of the trunk(s). Summary: highly advisable for beginners, be patient and never let it dry out, very suitable for rather small and even very small bonsaï (shohin and mame). Good luck!

Moin, Yes, I finally found your Video about Potentilla and Berberis. I discovered this shrubs a few years ago. To try to find a Potentilla with a Trunk I nearly gave up. I decided to get the best multytrunk and made it into a single trunk. With the Berberis, it grows so vigorously it is hard to be a head of the growth. But there are always so many branches..... endles options :-)) Potentilla makes a nice small Bonsai with interresting and colourfull redish bark and the Flowering is really nice. Thank you for this Video! By the way, I really like how you did your Videos, including the self made ones without someone helping with the Camera :-) To see your back is not that bad :-) The viewing angle is just perfekt! Please go on like that! Thank you very much!!
