We share our experience when we swapped our Lunar caravan for our new Bailey Ridgeway. This was filmed in October 2018 and we share the special day. We ended up taking 2 days to sort the new caravan and finished off having a quiet weekend away in the Caravan & Motorhome Club Cirencester Park.
We part exchanged our Lunar Clubman ES and transferred all our belongings to the new Bailey Ridgeway 640 at Swindon caravans who were very accommodating. We have set up an Amazon Storefront with groups of products that we own or recommend, so please check it out. trudg.uk/storefront

That brings back some pleasant memories of our handovers. I must admit I thought arriving at 3pm was a bit late for the handover and swapping everything over, we were able to empty our old vans out at home before heading to the dealer saving a lot of faffage.

Hi Dan I’ve waited a long time to see the exciting pick up of the new van, sad saying good bye to the old one. I cried when our Monza went up the road all the memories of holidays with the children, great thing was our friend bought it and the Monza holidayed with us until he upgraded. Think I spotted an excellent “tip” during the video, you secured oven and grill doors with a bungee cord ( I’ve not had the grill pan on the floor ) sure it will help someone. Thank you for all the effort. Cheered me up a bit should have been going away today but with storm Gareth and very high winds safety says save trip for another weekend.
@TheTrudgians

Hi Colin, the bungee was a force of habit for us - the Lunar's oven door was quite loose and would always be open by the time we arrived. So, we just tide them up together and it stopped. We have since stopped doing this in the Bailey as the oven door is quite tight.

Ten years ago we had a very rushed handover on a then brand new Sprite Alpine 4. Couple that with a fault on the new towbar electrics which we discovered the first trip away and it wasn't a very auspicious start to caravanning. This time, we've gone to a well established towbar fitting company. Tick. And from the reviews we've read we're hoping for much better handover when we pick up our new Freedom next month 🤗 Tick.

Aaaaw 06:45 was quite emotional! Lenny the Lunar got your into caravanning and perhaps shaped your future, I felt the same when Elvis drove off down the road to his new life in Wales. Silly really how we get so emotionally invested in lumps of metal and plywood! x

Great videos, thank you so much. Very informative and fun. Just picked up our first caravan from the dealer and we are so excited for our first caravan holiday here in Iceland. Had to have help picking up the caravan cause we are still waiting for our car to be fitted with a tow-hook. So for now the caravan(a german Weinsberg) sits in front of our house while I watch your videos and prepare for the first ride. Cheers.

Morning Richie, That cardboard box on the floor was the entire amount of stuff going in the caravan (oh and a duvet, and bits in the front locker) but thats it - surprisingly we run quite a light payload, when we travel - the bulky / heavy stuff stays in the car. The only things added into the caravan are clothes and a box for some food items. I wont lie, i did cry a bit when the Lunar went. such many good memories. I hope you are well.

If we traded in a caravan again (we did ours in January for a new Elddis) I'd get the dealership to inspect the caravan well before any sale price is agreed. Our dealer knocked £1K off the trade in price after their inspection - spongy floor and damp (on a 10 year old regularly serviced at a Bailey Dealer). Left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths to be honest. We still would've bought the new van, but the surprise of them finding the faults shaped our strategy should ever we do the same thing again. Perhaps if we'd have got another Bailey from the same Bailey dealer that serviced (and sold) the van to us, they'd have swallowed the "damage" which in all honesty have come out at regular annual service time - it never did

I went the opposite way. Changed from a cadiz to a lunar saros sb. The bailey was great to start but then i noticed you could barely move in the shower. Not enough shelf space in the bathroom, beds too high and you crashed into the blinds, the side lockers stretched my arms 6" trying to reach in and get out what i couldnt see! The gas locker door lock was a Houdini qualification getting it to lock after being opened! They then brought out the series 3 and they decided to add a bathroom mirror and put a shelf above it. Then you had to bend down to look in the mirror! I think they need to get designers to use prototypes before they market, but like computers they put it out and the customer sorts the problems for them.

Dan. I bought a 2019 Bailey Grande Rimini (love the van), but I am struggling to get above 70kg nose weight. With all the stuff needed for a trip loaded into the front of the van and clothes in the boot of the car, the nose weight is 70kg max (with porch awning only 68kg). Should I worry? The caravan does not tow very well (nodding donkey) and makes us seasick, is this due to the nose weight or because I am using a Transit Custom with leaf springs as a tow vehicle? Sorry for the double question.... Love all the video’s so many thanks from a caravan novice for all your advice.

Thanks for another nice-to-watch video. Good relaxation. As an European mainlander, I'm curious about you Brits' oddities: what's up with the obsession of three front windows on your caravans? It looks... -Not as nice as one window. 🤐 And the two opposing straight sofas with a chest in the middle? Hot tip: C and G formed seating. It's better👍 And cabinet space is better than occupying it with a micro you likely never use? That's all of my questions for now 😉
@krismcewan
@krismcewan 5 жыл бұрын
Kjell Kristian Kvinge we used to have a van with a bay front window I miss it dearly .2006 bailey ranger. Apparently they stopped doing them due to them being easy to break and water ingress during moving in the rain. (Driven rain). Bailey replaced the bay window with the 3 in the newer GT series that replaced the ranger and they are less susceptible to breaking or letting in water. More than likely it would be cheaper to do than a big window

Hi Dan love all your videos, we brought a new Bailey Valencia last September from a dealership over 200 miles away in Dorset , had two free nights at Wareham Forest Site, one in the old van and one in the new, the next day we traveled to Cornwall for the rest of our hols. We found about 6 faults with the van nothing serious, all have been logged with the dealer and hopefully they will all be put right soon. Dan what are your thoughts on the fridge vents meshing, I think the mesh isn’t fine enough and it’s not fastened down around the edges and only attached to the plastic lugs
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын

@geofffoster1704

Hi Dan, the reason I mentioned the vents was because the last time I was at the storage site I noticed a few flies around the vents, so I took them off and found about 20 flies at the back of the fridge and a few inside the caravan, I have taken photos of the back of the vents and sent them to our dealer who in turn will forward to Bailey, hopefully Bailey will get this sorted

Hi Bente, as you know us brits love the rain, and this is perhaps the biggest reason why we love a hard standing pitch, it means we can caravan in wet muddy conditions without sinking in the mud. Of course, we still moan about it - but we can do it.

Hi Dan reminded us of the day we picked up our new caravan December 2017 same things putting everything away in a logic manner so we could find it (that didn't work) We were new to touring and it was a mega leaning curve the first week we traveled home from the dealers to park on our drive way thank heavens for the motor mover then we began to explore all the inside/outside bits and pieces made a list how to do this and that and we needed more information so to the Internet we went the conversation between us went from hows the weather to caravan Jargon we became caravan geeks who had no knowledge never ever pitched a touring before (we had previously owned a static) with zero knowledge and only basics and having the ability to spell CARAVAN we found your youtube channel and then we become nerds in caravan jargon And we took the new caravan for a quick weekend break in January 2018 ten miles from home to test everything (i had already tried all of it at home on the drive way) We both enjoy the times away both of us retired January 2018 and we have a caravan and a dog and tortoise that travel in the UK Thanks for all you effort and time you put into the you tube channel it was good for other ideas best wishes to Angela and Tom and Chloe

Good informative video Dan and hope you're enjoying the new van. However as far as I'm concerned, a big thumbs down to the dealer for booking you in at 3pm, knowing full well they close at 5.30pm. That is far too much of a rushed handover, which meant you having to return the following day.

a big thumbs up to the dealer who tried their best to work around our very tight schedule. We were the ones who could only do a 3pm appointment and couldn't stay on to finish the job. So, in actual fact they were amazingly supportive and accommodating to our needs.
@justinmorgan8128
@justinmorgan8128 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheTrudgians Fair enough, but they should know how long a proper handover takes and should have notified you accordingly. The dealer I use do not handover any Caravans after 1pm because they appreciate how long it takes, still like everything else they're all different. As long as you were happy with the situation, that's all that matters.

Same here. Done it on my drive and you can watch and make sure its done! In fairness, theres not a lot to do as apart from running gear, they dont service only check its working. If youb dont tow much theres little to do on the running gear. Ive always said they should base it on mileage as they do with a car not calendar regardless if you use it or not.

how do you know what your nose weight should be
@TheTrudgians
@TheTrudgians 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, the Noseweight should be between 5% and 7% of your caravan's MTPLM So the calculation should be your caravan MTPLM x 0.05 - that will give you your 5% value and MTPLM x 0.07 will give you the 7% value. so for us the value should be between 69Kg and 97Kgs. However, to add a complication, our tow car can only have a maximum of 90Kgs on the tow ball. so in real terms any nose weight between 69kg and 90kg is what we should be aiming for. we split the difference and aim for a nose weight of around 80Kgs. I hope that helps.

What? No problem with damp? He’s using a tool that can be interpreted in many ways by one of the many crooked caravan dealers. (Clearly the fact that you are making a KZfaq video has not influenced them in any way 😂) . I was told by a local (large) dealership that one side of my van was riddled with damp and they had to lower their original quote by £1,000 due to the fact that the whole side of the caravan HAD to be replaced. Strange that the person that bought my old one happened to store it on the same site as me and when we checked inside, surprise surprise, the same wall NOT A NEW ONE and the customer was never told it was riddled with damp. ( of course it never was )

Dan had already touched on this in a previous video. Their needs have changed since they bought the Lunar so they bought a caravan that was better suited to their current needs. It is for the same reason that I sold my Coachman 2 berth and bought the Lunar which is a 5 berth. My current tow car (2008 Citroën C4 Grand Picasso) has more towing capacity so there was no problem with getting a bigger caravan and I'm still well within the limits.
