A crappy watch with papers and box is still a crappy watch. TRUTH.

Very true indeed. But the crappy watch, average watch, grail watch or rare watch will still command more money with (correct) box and papers everyday. That's just the reality of it.

i have noticed on a couple of occasions when at auction ( classic car ) the hammer has come down quicker than it should with no attempt to sell or promote a particular model ( from experience with my 1956 bentley continental ) and im sure it was because the auctioner knew the bidder .So i am wary of selling at auction

A bigger problem is a shill in the crowd, who artificial inflated the price...paying more for something you won is worse than not getting to buy anything anyway

Fantastic video. The guy was so good. I inherited my grandfather GMT Pepsi which is a non hacking movement so I don’t know how old it is but since this is a family lineage watch which will never be sold no matter what prices go to I had the watch serviced at Rolex. I plan to wear the watch also which is why I did the service. Rolex insisted I change the dial because it had some issue with authentication which I have no clue what that was about but anyway I let them replace whatever was worn out and bring the watch back to life. I’m so happy with the watch it looks brand new and sparkles! I know many may think this is Heresy but like I said it’s going to my boys when I pass and I plan to wear it for many years which is why my grandfather gave me the watch. Anyway yes for what I spent on the service I probably could have gotten an OP at retail but that would have defeated the point of this entire journey. I know I did what was right for me.

It’s understood by man in the collector community that Rolex will frequently ruin vintage watches by replacing parts with modern equivalents. Better to send it to one of the well reputed vintage restorers who can often repair and use true to form vintage parts.

@@4968ace I got the watch back from Rolex and it looks great I love it. I’m never going to sell it so the value doesn’t matter. Maybe one day my boys or grandkids will sell it but that won’t be my problem. I’m not trying to be flippant but I’m not a price first Rolex owner. It’s a family piece I will never sell and I like it looking good. I understand others feel different and to each his own.

Happy to hear this! I think it's important to understand that when Eric says in the talk that this practice is bad, he means it's bad from a value/collectibility perspective. There's a reason why Rolex do this, and it is because they want their watches to be as functional as possible. Therefore, if you don't care about value and you want to use your vintage Rolex watch, I don't see anything wrong with getting it serviced at Rolex.

i just got a CYMA tavannese machine (1930/1939) 35ish mm diameter 15 jewel , military watch with empe B-Uhr type 1 WW2 Luftwaffe Navigation Watch "inspired" CYMA dial , the caliber apears to be a variation of the 7 caliber series, this is my first antique watch , just bought it , i just wish it was a good call for 150 bucks, i love how it looks , i dont know if i should try to sell it at a higher price or keep it, i just so badass.

Great lecture! I too find the jealousy and vitriol on watch forums to be awful. I've been booted from a few forums for trolling Rolex haters right back.

I wonder what the person at Rolex thinks when they get an untouched vintage Rolex on the desk, "Aha nice one, never touched and rare as nothing else, lets polish it....".

will the esteemed Horological Society of New York welcome the Grand Pontiff of Horology, (inventor of the wrist watch check) Archibald Chesterfield III? I believe we can all benefit from an appearance of the Pontiff.

Fantastic talk, very Rolex for used which I didn’t expect. I’d love this man to value a watch I bought second hand in my family jewellery shop 40 years ago. 18 ct gold onyx and tigers eye dial and diamond bezel. Is there a way to contact him? I’d pay for the vaulation

If a watch is unattractive to you.... Don't buy it.... The monetary "profit" you may make is not worth the time you spent looking at an ugly watch.... An ugly watch is like an ugly wife....

I completely disagree on the topic of "birth year" watches. If that is what draws someone into watch collecting, or more specifically the vintage watch game, so be it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it other than you don't like it.... otherwise decent video.
