Collective Soul was overshadowed by less talented, aggressively promoted, loud, self destructive grunge bands in the 90s. Ed’s lyrics are personable and intelligent. This band was, and is, highly underrated.

I was born in 1977 so the 90's were my hay day I guess you could say & I truly think the 90's was also the last era for actual music also. That's also when Much Music also showed actual music videos. I remember rushing home from high school to watch 'The Power Hour' which was a heavy metal show in Much Music & then it changed to 'The Power 30' & then 'Loud'. But I have my younger relatives that are in their teenage years now say to me oh your so lucky to have grown up in the 90's with all that great music, it must have been so cool to have been in that? & when I think back there right,it was a very special time for music. I'm in Canada so not only was bands like Bush,Collective Soul.Live,SilverChair,Green Day,Pearl Jam,SoundGarden,Nirvana,Seven Mary Three, etc big but in Canada at the time we had some really great alternative acts of our own that were really awesome if not better than those bands I mentioned like The Tea Party,I Mother Earth,Sloan,Our Lady Peace,Tragically Hip,Big Sugar,54-40,Econoline Crush,Killjoys,The Gandharvas,Age of Electric,Limblifter,Big Wreck,Thornley,The Watchmen,Cowboy Junkies,Moist,Matthew Good Band,Rusty,Treble Charger,Wide Mouth Mason,Out Of Your Mouth,Sandbox,Slowburn,Glueleg,Salmonblaster,The Inbreds,Pluto,The Headstones,Eric's Trip,Northern Pikes,Pursuit of Happiness,The Grapes Of Wrath,Rush, etc. I know I went on a tirade there with name dropping but those Canadian bands were huge in the 90's here in Canada & some of those bands had some success in the States & Europe etc as well like I Mother Earth,Our Lady Peace,Rush. But for some reason these bands that are huge here in Canada just can't break into the States for some reason? Like The Tragically Hip who are huge here in Canada could never break into the States. They've got some fans on the border cities like Buffalo & Detroit & they played Saturday Night Live in the 90's & I thought that would help their cause but it did nothing for them in the long term in the States. But they are Gods here in Canada still. But Rush seemed to make it big with a lot of countries which is awesome for them. The Guess Who & BTO did well in the States as well.

It's because of the telecommunications act of 1996. It repealed restrictions on media companies that kept labels and companies from merging into monopolies. When this song was made in 1995, we had almost 100 major media companies, now we have 6, all because of that bill. And, now the companies don't have to compete and find "the new sound", so they can just keep making the same crap and following the same formulas and people just buy it because they don't have other options in popular music. There are still good underground bands but you have to dig around to find them because there is no point for them to get signed anymore. You have to have a following already to be signed to a major label now, and why would someone do that if they've already got a following? But then yeah, so radios and popular music is all just regurgitated garbage now because of this bill. It doesn't help that these six lab ls are making all of the popular music too, so think about having the same six groups of staff members making ALL of the music coming out, it's going to sound the same if you're using the same crew for all of it. Also, on a side note, it was passed unanimously by both the republican and democratic parties so the entire political establishment is to blame for this.

@ariexmae no, you can't call rock "pop" just because it's popular. reguardless of "pop" meaning "popular" it is still a specific genre. a genre that intentionally uses popular formula for the sake of creating intentionally popular music. not all top 40 is pop. michael jackson is pop, wham was pop, mili vanilli were pop, brit spears and nsync and new kids, all that is pop. it's not about cramming what you hate into a ball. i hate lincoln park, but that doesn't mean they're not a rock band.

@Haushinka234 Ya... Zeppelin is pop. Pop is not a genre of music where you get to shove everything you hate into a little ball and pretend like everything that YOU like is special and neat. Pop is a type of music that the masses enjoy and since Zeppelin is one of most Popular bands in history .. It is safe to say they are pop. I agree that they are a million times better than todays top 40. But they are the top 40 of their time and you are not unique for liking them.
