1990 was one of the greatest rookie classes in hockey history..if it wasn’t the junk wax era and this class was 5 years earlier we would have been looking at sets like the 86 fleer basketball set..
@17Helton3 жыл бұрын
That 1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier set should be at least 50% of what the '86 Fleer BK is. Packs should be a few hundred a piece and they can be had for $30-40 bucks. It doesn't contain a "Jordan" but still numerous HOF'ERS, print run, small set (132), similarities..etc.

@17Helton3 жыл бұрын
Someday that Score set will take off I think. The totality of RC player selection is great. The difficult borders with those colors you mentioned are great. The problem with that set is the print run was too high to meet the hockey demand. However as the years go by and the demand rises the supply will dry up. That's how the '86 Fleer BK changed. In 1990 we saw '86 Fleer BK hand collated sets on shop shelves for $15 ea all over the place! I'm not saying the Score will be $100k a box. No way. But there will be a increase once the chase is on for True Gem 10's.

I’m going out for the day for a medical appointment but I can explain why the 90-91 rookie card class is so insane, best class all time not only in hockey cards but all trading cards possibly. I’ll do so later tonight. Quick note, players 21-25 would be even more interesting to list since they won’t be as obvious and thus more revealing, guys like Tkachuk and Brind’Amour. Also, there should be an honorable mention on 91-92 Pro Set Platinum S2, Fred Rogers rookie. Awesome vid, we love you for your hockey takes.
@Rorschachqp3 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the hockey vid, the hockey faithful are as always grateful. As to why the 90-91 rookie card class is so good... 1) First year other companies made cards; before, Topps would wait sometimes years to give a player a card. Other than rare cases like Lemieux, Topps always waited for a player to play more than a full season. 2) Multiple generations of player classes, 90% UD, 10% Score going deep on prospects. Plus an exceptional rookie class in 89-90 (Modano, Roenick, etc.), and insane draft in 1990. You can see the generations by looking at the 1OAs as RCs in 90-91: Modano 1988, Sundin 1989, Nolan 1990, Lindros 1991 in the future. That’s four+ draft classes including one generational class 90, one generational player 91 Lindros. So we had the standard Topps rookie class, plus last year’s picks playing like Sundin, then last year’s absurd first round (Jagr 5th overall, Brodeur too plus another like 12 guys who made at least one All Star team), plus Upper Deck’s WJC Team Canada so you get Lindros in Score and Niedermayer in UD WJC TC for players not even drafted yet. Oh and I forgot to mention the iron curtain coming down so not only satellite countries like Czechs and Jagr, but two full generations of the best of Central Red Army’s greatest starting squads
@Rorschachqp3 жыл бұрын
USSR squads, old guard - Makarov, Larionov, Krutov, Fetisov and Kasatonov...With that ridiculous rookie class, it was Makarov who won the Calder in 89-90. The new guard was where the hobby excitement was in Fedorov, Bure and Mogilny plus some outliers like Arturs Irbe. So those three things...iron curtain coming down, new companies coming in and pushing the limit, and finally some absurd rookie classes and draft 1990, 1991. The sick thing is the 91-92 class was very good too but by 92-93, UD had depleted the stock. One side note, another contributing factor is the new influx of hockey card collectors, many coming from baseball in 1991, liked collecting goalies. So before, there was only one goalie who was playing and being collected: Patrick Roy (goalies were considered too crazy or erratic to be collected). After the 1991 class, you had Belfour, Brodeur, Richter, Kolzig, Joseph, Hasek, Potvin, and many others not noted since they were flashes in the pan.

If you look at his rookie card from Sweden, they spelled his name wrong which adds value. It’s a upper deck card. They spelled his name wrong on a few of his rookie cards. I’m a season ticket holder for the Red Wings. I’ve meet quite a few Red Wings throughout the years. Nick gave me his stick and signed it. He also signed the rookie cards and jersey. As of right now I don’t have any plans to sell any memorabilia. One of my prizes possessions is a 2001-2002 jersey signed by every player on that hall of fame Cup winning team.

There was a lot of key rookie cards from 1990 because the NHL saw a huge migration of players from Europe and Russia during this time. Another factor for a few of these cards is in typical Topps fashion for hockey, they often wouldn't feature a player in the set for their rookie season but would wait a season or two. For example Mike Madano, Jeremy Roenick and Ed Belfour (to name a few) all have their rookie cards in 1990 sets but were all in the NHL for a least 1 or 2 seasons or more prior. Topps didn't take many risks and since the Topps and O-Pee-Chee brands had the full hockey card market share up until 1989, I guess they could do whatever they wanted to lol I recently finished up research for a Top 10 NHL rookie cards of the 1990s and even covering the entire decade, 5 out of the 10 cards were from 1990 as well. Great video as always Chris! Really enjoying the hockey content, keep it up!

Great video, Chris! I was surprised that Curtis Joseph's best RC was the Topps version and not OPC Premier. It must be due to the pop report: 13 Gem Mint 10's of the Topps, (with only 32 copies graded by PSA), and 417 Gem Mint 10's of the OPC Premier (out of 1376 copies graded). When grading gets back to normal, it may be worthwhile to buy some raw Topps CuJo's and get them graded.

The reason that there were so many rookies in the 1990 season is because in 1989 the Iron Curtain fell and it allowed many of the players from the Soviet Union Czechoslovakia etc etc etc and other Bloc Nations to finally come and play in the NHL instead of just for the national team.

@@collectorinvestordealer Here's a list of top rookie cards from the 1970s to help you out (in card number order, not dollar amount): 1970-71- Brad Park, Gilbert Perreault, Guy Lapointe, Bobby Clarke, Darryl Sittler; 1971-72 - Ken Dryden, Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur; 1972-73 - Don Lever (not a star player, but his cards sell for a lot for some reason); 1973-74 - Billy Smith, Larry Robinson; 1974-75 - Don Cherry (coach), Lanny McDonald, Borje Salming, Denis Potvin, Scotty Bowman (coach), Steve Shutt, Bob Gainey; 1975-76 - Clark Gillies; 1976-77 - Bryan Trottier, Dave "Tiger" Williams (a popular goon, not a great player); 1977-78 - Mike Palmateer; 1978-79 - Mike Bossy, Bernie Federko, Doug Wilson, Brian Sutter, Dave Taylor; 1979-80 - I don't think you need any help with that one. It's possible that some lesser rookies from the early '70s have sold for a lot in PSA 10s. I was just giving you the big names, plus a few that I know are popular despite not being superstars.

Let me know if anyone can name a better rookie crop than the 1990-91 Upper Deck High Series? For me, this has to be the greatest NHL rookie card set of all time! It includes 11 Hall of Famers with possibly two more to add to that list in the near future. The eleven Hall of Famers are, Jamomir Jagr, Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure, Sergei Fedorov, Scott Niedermayer, Mike Modano, Rob Blake, Ed Belfour, Mark Recchi, Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov. The other two players that should be getting in at some point are Jeremy Roenick and Alexander Mogilny, for a total of at least 13 Hall of Famers! The rest of the following rookies were very high quality NHL players that came in the set. A couple of them could still make the Hall of Fame. They are, Mike Richter, Peter Bondra, Owen Nolan, Petr Nedved, Keith Primeau, Rod Brind'amour, Curtis Joseph, Mathiew Schneider, Kevin Stevens, Adam Graves, Mike Ricci, Trevor Kidd, Darren Turcotte, Jyrki Lumme, Bobby Holik, Robert Reichel, Felix Potvin and Pat Falloon.
