@@collectorinvestordealer fantastic. You illuminate a great lesson in that story as well. You catch a lot more bees using honey instead of vinegar. That's how my mom said it anyway. You can achieve a lot more success using kindness instead of aggression. I never should've given up the childhood dream of my childhood collection one day being worth a fortune. Never would have dreamed that my collection would have been close to 1million. I had 18, 2 pages worth of jeter sp foil rookies, 3 chrome Lebrons, topps pristine refractor lebron rc, Bowman rc, Kobe UDglass crystal 88/100, and so much vintage baseball it is sickening to think back on. Sold them all for $800 when I was struggling in my 20's. Cautionary tale. Keep up the great content my friend. The people love it.

A lot of people have stories like yours, so you are not alone. And yes, I agree with the honey/vinegar line. If your overly aggressive, you may win a few battles in the short term, but in the long run I dont think its the right strategy.

Great story, loved it. My brother and I started collected growing up in 90s and Cal Ripken was his favorite. Phil Niekro is my favorite. I eventually ended up with his collection. Still working on my Niekro collection and still collecting 29 years now. As kids, we used to go back and forth at night before bed naming baseball players until we couldn't come up with anymore names before falling asleep.

Thanks for the time. Dream deals turned nightmare. In 1992 I make a buy off of a lady of some 1970’s football and baseball cards I found in her attic while routing phone lines, about 20,000 cards for $300. Unsorted and mint, I stored them with my collection in my brothers garage until I could go through them. Two weeks later his truck caught fire and the garage was a total loss. Actually took me out of the hobby until 2 years ago. Well, good times, LOL. Cheers!

Enjoyed the story. In the 1970’s, I had put an ad in a local paper that I was buying cards. A widow, as in this story, called and wanted to dispose of her husband’s collection. Turns out they were mostly 1930’s Goudeys! Im proud to say I didn’t lowball her. Instead, I sold a lot of the stars at auction in Sports collector’s digest. She got a few thousand dollars and I kept mostly commons. I do have a 1933 Ruth from that collection that isn’t in great condition. She also gave me a trunk full of old publications so it worked out for both of us.

Thanks for sharing this story. What happened on the coin flip for the Ripken box? I would've been steamed to lose that one and, in general, would've rolled my eyes endlessly at this dude whose fanatical strategy was dictated by a "reality" TV show. Any standout cards from the deal that you remember?
@collectorinvestordealer

I dont remember exactly, I think that I split the Ripkens up for the coin flip so I was guaranteed to get half of them. And then I bought the other half from him later. There really werent any big dollar cards in the collection (probably nothing over $100), but it was so bulky that it added up.

He’s always been my favorite player too, and I’ve been lucky enough to meet him in person a few times, and acquire his autograph on multiple items (books, balls, photos, and even a couple bats). I'm a huge Cal Ripken fan too, he was the Mike Trout of the '80s. I have a clear plastic holder filled with about 500 Cal Ripken cards that I amassed over the years. I still remember I was the victim of a bad trade - I traded an '84 Topps Ripken for a mail-away glossy card of him. I didn't understand that base cards are (were?) worth more than inserts. Today I must have a few copies of that '84 card and his '82 Topps Rookie. Take that, Josh! (but I still love you, man!)

I have attended auctions quite a bit in the past and seen a lot of people bid up items because they get caught up in the hype of the moment even when they don't have the ability to sell the item(s) or knowledge of the item. Chris, when I stumbled upon your channel a few months back and I heard you mention talking about card deals in upcoming videos I thought to myself that must be like listening to someone talk about their fantasy football team. I couldn't have been more wrong. If there was a way to invest in youtube channels like cards I would be all in on yours. Great content, great stories. Look at the interaction and comments you get from one video! Amazing! Keep up the great work, and keep the stories coming! Storage wars hahahah!

Thank you Jason, really appreciate that. I kind of thought these stories might be boring as well, but they are super fun to relive and its awesome to see so many people enjoy them.

But that's ok. Let them spend spend spend on these collections, realize its one time consuming, two its a lot of money and three the return on investment isn't always there is you don't know what you're doing. Give it another year, and they will be out of cards. I've been buying, collecting and selling since I was 14. I'm much older now and this is a hard business to be successful in. Right now I'm enjoying it, but you can see people go broke so fast!

Spot on. There are a lot of ways to make money in the business, but its not easy and the get-rich-quick mentality that some have will usually not pan out.

Great story! I thought it was common courtesy to only have one buyer looking at a time. Let them buy or pass and then the next buyer can check it out. Sorry you didn’t get it all. Cant wait for the next video!

Yeah you are right, I would certainly follow that courtesy rule but a lot of people who dont sell things regularly arent aware of it

Awesome story bro people are silly out there they're just out for the big dollar you really know your stuff when it comes to cards but I tell you I wish I would have kept all the cards I have when I was a kid but I regret one day just started ripping my cards up for some reason I was only about 11 my mom said I had a Pete Rose rookie card that I lost but you learn and I had a bunch of Jordan cards that my ex-wife stole that's the learning experience it is what it is I can't even get into the hobby and collect now because it's so expensive

@@collectorinvestordealer thanks for responding yep you're right it happens something happened today I'm not sure if it's happened to you before but I checked got an email that Walmart stocked new football basketball baseball cards on their website and they're stocked in my store but I called my store and they said they didn't have any I don't know what that's all about do you know

@@collectorinvestordealer that's true I thought they were putting the limits 2 per customer hopefully panini and the stores are fixing this issue cuz they people need to leave stuff back for other collectors instead of hoarding up it's kind of greedy I just figured you might know something that's going on with that
