As a college senior, here is some advice for college: If you end up going, consider why you want to be there. Are you a student who wants to have fun or succeed academically? Although less than 1% can do both. Most opt for the fun. Also, my biggest regret as someone who kind of wanted a fun social life was I commuted from home. Don’t do that, unless you want to save money. Also, for the guys, don’t try to date within your school unless your school is over 20k minimum. Primary issue is that if it don’t work out, you will see that person almost daily. For chicks, don’t go for the douche idiot frat guys, unless you want to end up as a single mom.

As a girl, this is great advice for me as a freshman in college. Glad to know that I won't go for those douche idiot frat guys since they're not my type. The same goes for guys because they're not my type either, and I'd rather go for the girls instead. It is because I'm a lesbian. My major is computer science since I want to be a video game designer/development, computer programmer, website developer, and data science specialist! I am also studying and researching multiple biological sciences at the moment! The main two that I'm focusing on the most are entomology and marine biology!

I'm currently a college student and I could relate to most of this. It gets very stressful sometimes, but if you find time to have fun and chill with friends, it's good. My advice for anyone who plans on going to college is to make sure your grades are good, find a friend group that supports you, and balance out your work and extracurricular activities. You want to do well in class, but at the same time, you want to have fun.

I remember during my first semester of college, I was going to take a shower and this guy there randomly decided to start talking to me in the bathroom. I tried telling him that I wanted to go take a shower but he couldn’t take the hint. He just kept talking. So I went in the shower and turned on the water, AND HE STILL KEPT TALKING. 6 years later he’s one of my best friends and denies that this shower thing ever happened LOL

I went to college for the most sensible reason of all: it's what comes after high school (which, believe me, I was VERY glad to put in the rear view mirror). I was completely clueless going in and didn't improve much afterward (hey, adulthood is tough for a rookie); basically the first two years were a total loss. I took a pretty long break before coming back, hooking up with some advisors who had a clue, and finally making some actual progress toward a degree that meant a damn. It was a community college. It was ridiculously affordable (a typical semester cost $100-$200), there was zero pressure from anyone or anything, nobody ever gave me any trouble, and the whole place was clean and pleasant. The workload could get taxing at times but I never found it excessive. If anything, the hard part was getting my lazy butt away from video games or television long enough to get to it. I got two very practical AS degrees, upgraded to a small, open-air, no-frills 4-year university, completed my Accounting major, and that was that. Your problem wasn't that you went in clueless. Trust me, EVERYONE'S clueless at that age (some more than others, obviously). It looks like you just picked a bad college that has no respect for its students. If I were scouting out higher education locations, my first glance at that bathroom would be an instant dealbreaker.

The only advice I can give is to a) do your prerequisites at a Community college to save money and b) don't force it. College isn't required to live a good life with a good job. Look into learning a Trade like being an electrician, a plumber, or go into HVAC. There's money to be made in Trades if you do it right.
@Budderman18
@Budderman18 8 ай бұрын
Biggest word of advice for all the high school juniors & seniors (or even younger). If you're going to go to college, GO TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE! They are so much cheaper than regular college, to the point where working during school would be enough to pay it off (or at least very close to). Plus you get the exact same stuff from them. You can still get the "experience" even if you're a commuter if that's a side reason for going. Complete 2 years there and if you want/need more, then you can transfer to an actual college. But I can guarantee, unless you're required to for what you're studying for, you'll realize its not worth going beyond 2 years. I recently graduated and walked out with an associates & $0 in debt, which is something not many people can say they've done. Also, especially if you're not going beyond 2 years, don't aim for Bs and As. Its just not worth your time since most employers won't give a shit. Plus if you do aim for them, good luck being able to have a life and/or hobbies outside of school lol, the amount of work at college compared to high school is at least 10x more.

This advice does not apply to everyone. Almost all employers for good jobs have a minimum GPA requirement. Academic performance truly does count in the early job search. If you did well in high school to earn scholarships, then go straight to university instead of community college. You just cannot get the same experience of independence and personal growth by staying at home and commuting to a community college. I am telling you right now that if you apply yourself in college and be responsible it is a very real possibility to graduate with doors opened that would have never been opened if you did not go to college career-wise, relationship-wise, and personal life wise. College changed my life for the better in so many ways. If I stayed at home I don't even want to imagine what I would be like today. It is just important to be responsible in college most of all.

most careers require some sort of college education, that’s why a lot of parents make it a requirement. not going to college really limits what you can do. that being said, so does certain college degrees. go to college and you can be exploratory and find out what you want to do. (whether that be community college or whatever, it doesn’t matter where you go to an extent.)
@mya.xoxo_

exactly. for the most part it's only gonna be a requirement for jobs like doctors, lawyers, etc, and for most jobs? the basic 9-5's that most adults will end up working, regardless of if they have a college degree or not? there's no way of trusting if that college education will be worth it.

The absolute, number 1 piece of advice I can give is PICK A MAJOR YOU ENJOY DOING! Do not, and I repeat, do not pick STEM because it ‘mAkES moNeY’. If STEM is your passion, and it’s genuinely what you want to pick, then by all means go for it, but it won’t make ANY money if you don’t enjoy it! You’ll either do absolutely terribly or you’ll just drop out halfway through if you don’t like it, so just pick a major that you love and are passionate about and don’t even factor in the odds of it ‘making money’. If you love it, if you’re passionate about it, *then you’ll find a way to make it work,* the great people throughout history didn’t get anywhere by listening to what works statistically and neither will you. And if you aren’t passionate about any of them? Don’t go! You can always go later or even never, there’s plenty of other ways to make it in the world!
@moethemoon
@moethemoon 8 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for the encouragement. I never really considered your point about not necessarily having to do “what works statistically”, though ironically I wonder how true that is statistically. Still, this encourages me to keep navigating through life and building life skills, while trying to work through the disillusionment I got from school. I will probably find what I’m passionate about.

I was in community college and wanting to study American Sign Language (I wanted to be an interpreter; yes I know a four year degree is required but I was starting off easy lol). In 2019 my GPA dropped because of my English and US history classes. I had to drop history because I was failing it and English, I was barely passing. Ironically both were my best subjects in high school. After the semester was over they sent me a letter telling me I was being put on academic probation for the entirety of next semester because of my low GPA (had to be 2.0 or higher). Before the semester ended I went to the disability office (I have Autism) and asked what happened because I thought I was in the program. It turns out that I never got put in the system. I brought in my IEP for them a few days later. It had everything. My diagnosis, my academic issues in school, etc. They said it “wasn’t enough” (*all the info was right there*). I haven’t been back to school since

My experiences with types of people in college: The Communists and Blue haired people, litteraly everywhere (about 40% of students on my university) (and theyre at war with the right wingers). The NPC (around 50% of students ): just trying to get their degree and go on with life. The right wingers: (about 5/10%): persecuted but chill, have to deal with the communists constantly throwing insults and disrupting their stuff.

this is definitely relateable. im a sophomore in college. my first year i was studying mechanical engineering and im not kidding when i say only 2 or 3 of my classes in my first YEAR of college actually had to do with my major. before going into sophomore year, i switched to finance with real estate concentration. I've had to take a a couple of prereqs that mostly have nothing to do with my major as well, but after this semester all my classes will be related to my major in some shape or form. colleges definitely make you waste A LOT of time and money making you do a bunch of pre-requisites and stupid electives and gen eds. luckily for me i have all my gen eds out of the way because i did dual enrollment in HS and the in-state tuition for my school is fairly cheap. Im only spending a bit over 2k per semester (im not dorming and dont pay for any kind of meal plan tho). as for the social life, its definitely harder to have a good social life in college if youre not a party person. im not a party person, ive been to one party my freshman year and was like "this shit is so overrated". dont get me wrong, i still have friends tho, but its a lot harder to find people in college that are not all focused on partying and clubbing, and finding like-minded people that will support you is definitely harder in college, unless youre going to harvard or something like that.
