I would always watch the Bluebonnet Bowl. It was held in Houston, Texas. First at Rice Stadium and later at the Astrodome. In those days the Astrodome was the only domed stadium.

How about the Kraft Hunger Bowl played in San Francisco at the Giants ball park? This was short lived and I believe it had a couple different names/sponsors.
@nathanstroud22238 ай бұрын
That bowl game is in NCAA 13, but I think they used a generic stadium model instead of the real thing. It's unfortunate, because a stadium with views of the San Francisco bay would've been a great venue for a neutral-site Pac-12 championship in dynasty mode.

It's now the inaugural Pop Tarts Bowl. It went from the Blockbuster Bowl to the Carquest Bowl to the Russell Athletic Bowl to the Cheez-It Bowl. But Cheez-It is sponsoring the Citrus Bowl now yet Kellogg still owns the sponsorship rights, so now it's the Pop Tarts Bowl. I still don't understand why they didn't take over the Bowl in Detroit and call it the Cereal Bowl.

Just about every Christmas day from 1991 to 2000 it was Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl day on ABC with me (the rest of my family didn't give a shit about that bowl game). I used to sit in front of the TV and watch that bowl game with youthful glee. My favorite Aloha Bowls were the 1993, 1996, and 1999 editions.
@classicsports50578 ай бұрын
There's a lot that you missed. Cherry Bowl only lasted 2 years in the mid 80s. Bluebonnet bowl lasted nearly 30 years before becoming defunct in the late 80s. Pasadena Bowl only lasted a few years in the 60s-early 70s. Hall of Fame/All-American Bowl in Birmingham lasted about 15 years before going defunct. Garden State Bowl lasted a few years in the late 70s-early 80s. California Bowl lasted for a decade in the 80s. There's probably another 2 or 3 video's worth of defunct bowls.

In my bay area "backyard" in San Francisco, we had the Diamond Walnut > Emerald > Kraft Fight Hunger > Foster Farms > Redbox bowl... moving from the Giants stadium to eventually Levi. I got to see the Terrapins, Canes, Noles, BC and a few others. I miss that bowl excitement locally! Went to a Silicon Valley bowl as well.

I remember the Freedom Bowl. That bowl was around for 11 years, and I saw two Freedom Bowls on TV. And those editions the 1991 and 1992 games. The 1992 game between USC and Fresno State is the Freedom Bowl I most remember because I waited all week for that game to come on, plus, it was the game that helped get USC head coach Larry Smith fired. The Trojans played so bad in that game offensively that USC's athletic department had had enough with the Smith regime.

You need to do more research because they are several bowls you missed like the Cherry Bowl, even though you mention the matchup between Marshall and Mississippi you had them playing in the Little Caesars Bowl. They actually played in the Motor City Bowl. Several other bowls are the California Bowl, that eventually would become the California Raisin Bowl, the Bluebonnet Bowl, and the Poinsettia Bowl. I know that more bowls did exist but I will leave you to find them on your own. Thanks for the content though.

In re: Seattle Bowl. I think if WFU won a bowl, it had to be discontinued under the old NCAA rules from 1977 onward. The Independence Bowl got an exemption when WFU won because Oregon was in control until Wake scored 29 unanswered points, which was understood to be just silly. -- Carl Wilkerson, WFU, 1987

You should look up the Steamboat Bowl, was an NAIA bowl game played only twice at Bracewell Stadium in Burlington, IA. Bracewell Stadium is a historic high school field built from a rock quarry back in 1920. It was the 1st high school field west of the Mississippi River to install lights, and in 2014, became the 1st high school field in the nation to convert to all LED lighting. These 2 games were in the late 1980s, though, back when it didn't even have play clocks or the artificial turf they have now.

Cherry Bowl in 1984 and 1985 is another. Pontiac Silverdome hosted that too, in what was the first attempt to host a game here in Michigan. Michigan State was in first one of that (it's first bowl game overall since 1966 I'd add), losing to Army 10-6. Mounting debt, a failed attempt to get a sponsorship by General Motors ironically enough given it'd sponsor what started as the Motor City Bowl years later, and dwindling attendance from year 1 to year 2, killed it.
@BassManSTS7 ай бұрын
@@ajk If you look at the the video footage of the two Steamboat Bowls, The first one was tailor made for Iowa Wesleyan University (which closed permanently after the 2023 spring semester), who still lost the game. The second one served as more of a neutral bowl game. Neither game could draw nearly as good of attendance is the Burlington High School football games could. Iowa Wesleyan often struggled for attendance, plus you have to remember this was in southeast Iowa during the winter in a pit surrounded by hills

Incorrect info on the "Little Caesars Bowl". Did NOT start out as the "Little Caesars" Bowl, it was first called The Cherry Bowl in the mid 1980s before rebranding to the Motor City Bowl, sponsored by the "Big Three" automakers in Detroit, Ford, GM, Chrysler and ran from 1997-2009. After 09' Little Caesars Pizza became the primary sponsor for the now defunct Motor City Bowl and was rebranded into the Little Caesars Bowl. Fast forward to 2014 the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl was rebranded, again, into what we know as the Quick Lane Bowl today.

Half of the current bowl games should not exist anymore. Right now the NCAA has a rule where if you win half your games you are both eligible. And in rare cases, not even that. The Minnesota gophers made a bowl game this year with a 5-7 record. There are 12 games in the regular season. To make a bowl game a team should have to win at least eight games. Thank goodness next year there’s going to be a 12 team college football playoff. Which will make the college football postseason more meaningful than it ever has been before. As a result, college football will be better than it ever has been before.

Man I miss the old bowl game logos. I'm glad more teams get to play postseason, but the NCAA needs to figure it out. Attendance is going to suffer in a lot of them because how do you draw fans if 2 programs who may not play anywhere near where the game is hosted without it having at least 1 marquee program or a match-up of 2 ranked schools???

I believe it's the Guarnateed Rate Bowl now. It went from being the Copper Bowl, then the Insight Bowl, then the Cheez-It Bowl, but then Cheez-It replaced the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, so the sponsorship in Arizona was bought by Guaranteed Rate Mortgage, so now it's the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

Any bowl game that wasn't an over commercialized piece of garbage, it doesn't exist anymore.
@timplumb218 ай бұрын
Man, you didn't even say anything about the Cherry Bowl. That was the original bowl game played at the Pontiac Silverdome the first one was played in 1984 it was Army and Michigan State this was Army's very first Bowl appearance ever they drew 70,000 fans(Silverdome had 80,000 seats) and Army won 10-6. Little side note I think it was Michigan State's first bowl game since the 66 Rose Bowl because this was during the era where it seemed like the Big Ten was only getting two bull bids out of the conference the conference champion of course went to the Rose Bowl to face the pac-10 champion and like the runner-up would get a bowl bid somewhere because there weren't many bulls around at the time at this point in time there was only like 15 bowl games so the top 25 plus the next five made it into a bowl plus you had to have better than a .500 record back then you had to be at least 6-5 to get a bowl bid(college only played 11 game seasons back then). So for Michigan State being in a conference where you have Michigan and Ohio State and each of those teams were generally 7-4 at the worst generally 8-3 or better though. So this was Michigan State's first year to have an opportunity because the Big Ten had more bowl bids given to them.
