The Traveling Wilburys were a British-American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Following Orbison's death in December 1988, the Wilburys released a second album, which they titled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, in 1990.
"End of the Line" is a song by the British-American supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. It was the final track on their debut album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, released in October 1988.

The Wilburys stemmed from George Harrison looking for a B side for one of his singles off Cloud Nine. He and Jeff Lynne had an idea and were going to record it, Roy Orbison was coming along to watch but they had no studio. Bob Dylan lent them his, and Tom Petty joined in when George went to pick his guitar up from Tom's house. The song became Handle With Care and was deemed too good for just a B side and they'd had such a blast doing it they decided to write more songs and release an album, thus the Wilburys were born.

@@Jay-Ben heh.. yeah, I'll date myself. I saw this when the video premiered on MTV. It, Handle With Care, and to be honest, all of Petty's Full Moon Fever album was a breath of fresh air, given that MTV at the time was full of bubble gum pop, rap, and metal at the time. While those were great, one would be rather fake if they were just straight intensity from rap and metal all the time. This was refreshing, and just plain fun, which was why those albums had the impact they did.

We didn't have internet, we didn't have rumor mills, nothing that told us of this super group in the works. Suddenly the DJ's are saying "yeah, stop what you're doing and take a listen to this new group." First you're hearing a voice that you would swear is George Harrison. Wait, that IS Roy Orbison, no one sounds like that. That's Tom Petty, is that Bob Dylan singing with him? Jeff Lynne is involved? HOLY SHIT!"

Elvis had a great emotional voice, but didn’t have the range of Roy. Elvis was a baritone who could do some tenor, while Roy could easily go into countertenor.

This was my mom's favorite song! She loved the guitar, and the words and George's smile! She died last year at the age of 89, I played this song for her while she lay in her bed at Hospice. She died 5 days later but I know she heard it. "Turn it up" would be her words when hearing this song. Oh how I miss my mom and MISS watching this video with her. RIP Joyce Harner, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and George Harrison.

I love that Roy Orbison tribute in this video. The rocking chair, his absence is both subdued an obvious. He was legendary when these guys were kids, and they all became legends on their own merits. Quite the ensemble to be sure.

Roy simply was the greatest. His contributions to the Travelling Wilburys was of another world and his final album “Mystery Girl” was an instant classic. “You Got It” put him back to the top.

I was 19 and working at Disneyland (1988). My lead asked if anyone wanted to go usher at the Fantasyland Theatre. I volunteered. The show I got paid to see was Roy Orbison! He played two shows! I did not know the name. After hearing him sing Crying, I was hooked. After work I raced to Tower Records in Brea and bought two Roy CD’s immediately. One of the best shifts I had working there!!!

The amazing thing about this group is the collaborative energy. I mean, they all wrote songs, but they left it to Bob to do the final touchup on all lyrics written and all his edits were accepted on arrival and without argument.

Music is at its best when it is close and for the sheer fun of it. Too many groups have failed due to getting too big, stardom becoming the goal, which is fleeting for everyone at some point. I think this is spelled out clearly with Roy Orbison, a star in the fading days of his career (at least in the US), who got a boost on his final (posthumous) album all because Jeff told George that he would be the one person he'd pick to be in a group with. Roy is fantastic and distinct, a voice that engenders sheer awe in the listener.

Somehow I was fortunate enough to see this video in its original cut, before Roy's death. That version was yanked upon his death, recut with the guitar in the chair in the scenes that had previously shown Roy, and released. A silent and very classy tribute by the surviving Wilburys.

From a time of proper music, written by proper songwriters, sung by artists who could sing and musicians that actually played instruments. I was so lucky to have grown up listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Yes, Eric Clapton and so many others whose music is still appreciated 50 years later.

While I understand your review of this song, and it was the biggest hit from the album, the truth is, there is NOT one bad song on this album. They each get to shine in a different song, both solo, and as a collaborating group. My personal favorite is Tweeter and The Monkey Man, but this whole album deserves a personalized review and bow down to how great it really is!!!!

"End of the Line" and "Heading for the Light" were not only great songs, but kind of foreshadowed Orbison's passing. You have to wonder if mortality was on their minds when they were writing these songs. None of them were "old" at the time, but none of them were young any longer.

Great reaction video, as always, Beth! And your reaction to Roy Orbison's voice while the chair meant for him was rocking hit me, too. I started tearing up. But hey, he left us with a great legacy. (Same with George Harrison and Tom Petty, who also left us far too soon.) And this song reminds me of my dad...a lot! He passed away over five years ago, and this song reminds me of the life he lived, especially when Roy sang, which was another reason I was tearing up. (Oh, and my dad's birthday happens to be December 18. He would've been turning 69.) So with that being said, I believe the song means this: Remember to live a good life because it will be an example for others, especially your loved ones, when you have passed on. Cheers, Beth!

This song takes me back to a road trip my family took through the piss backwater of Saskatchewan in the late 80s. This song came on the dinky FM radio, and I was mesmerized. I knew who none of these artists were, but I was entranced by the smooth lyrical tones and the folksy blues rock.

As a young child in the late 60's and very early 70's, I remember the striking image of Roy Orbison on one of my mom's albums. She loved his music, and thanks to her, so do I. I really got back into it when Black and White Night was released. Sadly, shortly after was when he passed. I had just started college. Now, I'm about to retire! Amazing, where HAS the time gone?

I remember when that CD was released and Roy's subsequent passing. Dad was a huge Dylan and Beatles fan, so he was so stoked when it came out. The harmonies on the two Wilbury's releases are some of my all time favorites

If you want to hear the genius of these guys, you want to listen to "Dirty World". There's a point in the song where they all sing "she loves your..." then one of them will sing something that she loves. Then they will all sing "she loves your...", and the next guy will sing something else that she loves. They continue to do that and go around to all of them. According to the "making of the Wilberry's" video, they were all sitting around a coffee table. Dylan threw a bunch of magazines in the middle. They all grabbed a magazine. When they got to the "she loves your..." part, they each had to find something in the magazine that they could put in the song that would work lyrically and was phrased correctly. They were kind of plying a game with it, but the level of musicianship that you need to record that live is ridiculous. They are all musical and lyrical geniuses... it is a shame they played together so few times.

It’s a great song, the key to it is the harmonics, and the rhythm, which is the underlying theme of the sound track, the individual characters, who go to make the band are as you say, have their unique, but distinctive voices. It has been arranged in such a way as give the members a prominence at different times throughout the track. It works, and works exceeding well. The arrangement was second to none. Overall I would say outstanding, top line! I loved it!

HI Beth, as well as all the wonderful things you brought to our attention about this beautiful video, I also love the obvious good vibe the band members had with each other. I notice a few occasions where there smiling at each other, because they're just loving the whole experience, all five absolute icons of music. 🙋‍♂

I lived this - Having been a fan of Roy Orbison since first hearing his "Only the Lonely" on the radio as a youngster, I was SO glad to see him appreciated and included by fellow musicians. And then...you know. Heartbreak. But consoled by the happiness he experienced in his last couple of years. Jeff Lynne can do a fair Roy impression, but maybe with less of his heart in his voice? Your reaction inspires me to make him and the others my day-long binge today. Thank you!

"We're going to the end of the line". And that's exactly what they're doing, playing their music until the day they die. That's the trademark of real musicians. There's only Bob and Jeff left now, and Bob begun his neverending tour in 1988.

Aww, that little reaction to the little memorial for Roy was just so sweet. That's something that's always touched me about this video, too. I am so pleased to have grown up with the Wilburys because my parents loved them, and the individual artists.

Roy toured with the Beatles in 1963 right when the group was becoming famous. During the tour Roy was gracious and allowed the Beatles to start finishing the shows instead of him. John later said it was super hard to follow Roy. He always got a huge ovation. Roy was also writing songs in the back of that bus while on tour. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Paul, John, and Roy discussed songwriting. It’s also well known that the other Wilburies were thrilled that Roy agreed to be in the group. He was a hero to all of them.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already - but the name Wilbury came from when George Harrison was recording "Cloud 9" with Jeff Lynne who was producing. George made a mistake during a recording, and Jeff said "don't worry, we'll bury it in the mix."

Roy Orbison was probably the best rock/pop singer of his generation. I believe he also was an established star years before anybody had ever heard of any of the other members of this group.

The album was recorded over a few weeks. George required them to complete a song every day. This song, was written and recorded in one day. ONLY these guys could pull this off.

Ah! Them Travelling Wilburys. They turned themselves into brothers even though none of them have the same surname. And brothers they were. Today, sadly, only two of them survive. May they will always live on in all our hearts through their music and their videos.
