Dutch was definitely a bully in the first movie, but his real evil spirit showed in the opening scene of Karate Kid 2. It gets missed by so many ppl, but when Kreese starts choking out Johnny, Dutch immediately turns his back and chooses not to look at it. Cold hearted bastard

Saying he in jail is smart on the writers part because if he ever agrees to take the role they can just say he got released from jail so it keeps the door open for that character to come in any time they want.

When I was a kid, my Dad once told me that if an actor can make you hate his character, that actor is doing his job very well. In the original Karate Kid, the two characters that I took a genuine dislike to were both Kreese, and Dutch. A fine job gentlemen. Just unfortunate that Dutch couldn’t make a return to the series - this would have added a new dimension to the plot...

Listening to Martin Kove speak during this interview, I'm glad to know that he's a real sweetie. The fact that he plays someone like Kreese, who is totally evil and corrupt so well, can only attest to the fact that as an actor, he does his job and does it well.

Chad McQueen was able to pull off being a bad arse with bleached blonde hair. I always found his character as the scariest of the cobra kai. The way his face changes when Daniel ignores him after remark “what’s a matter mommy not here to dress you”.

@@darthscouser5255 I've always wondered why Dutch is a popular nickname in America. I do know Yankees is an amalgamation of two common Dutch names, Jan and Kees. I also wonder why the Pensylvania Dutch are called Dutch while they are actually of German descent, but i suppose this is just because of a wrong translation since the words Dutch (from the Netherlands) and Deutsch (German) look and sound so similar.

I'm surprised Johnny would still have any time for Dutch. When Kreese turned on Johnny, Tommy and Bobby were trying to help their friend but Dutch kept quiet and turned his back.

Saw an interview with Chad McQueen recently and he was still quite well kept for his age(60) but his accident at Daytona really took its toll on him physically, he really got busted up and broke tons of bones all over his body, it's a miracle he is even able to walk. He's crazy rich from his dad's estate and staring in a TV show was probably just not worth the effort to him. There's always season 6 though!

I saw promotions for Cobra Kai on KZfaq about 2 years ago. I liked the movies a lot when I was young but did not give the TV show a second glance. I ran across the show on Netflix a week ago surprised to see that there are three seasons. It took me three nights to watch all three seasons. Once you start to watch you cannot stop. Can't wait for season 4.

It would be great to have him back but he has gained about 80-100lbs. Saw him last year at a Catholic fund raiser in Florida. He is very into helping the church when ever he can. Very soft spoken and very polite

Marin Kove is a great actor to play a villian. Ending of season 3 of Cobra Kai is awesome. It really went back to the first movie. The episode with Chozen was really good. To see what kind if person he became after his fight with Daniel and running away in the storm.

When you watch Karate Kid, it is clear that Daniel's showdown with Dutch in the tournament was meant to be its own event but was cut down in order to fit the fight into the montage of Daniel beating his preliminary opponents. I've never seen the unedited version of the fight but I'd love to know how it was intended to go down.

It's only now that one appreciates how good of an actor Martin Kove is . You genuinely dislike Sensei Kreese and it evokes a visceral reaction...until you realize he's an actor playing a part...

No. The question is what "was" going on with Dutch? The boy was just too high strung. He would be the only one out of the Cobra Kai that I would actually consider kind of scary.

You’re probably thinking of Jimmy. He had one line in the entire movie, though ironically enough, he had the most acting success afterwards (Tony O’Dell, who went on to star in Head of the. Class). Supposedly he’s still close with the others, so if they come back, there’s a good shot he will too.

@Joel Johnson Jimmy's line was "I thought they broke up" when they first see Daniel with Ali on the beach, and then (I think) Tommy says, "She broke up, he didn't."

@Joel Johnson It was a quick scene after he beat Jerry Robertson, and before he beat Tommy. I get why they wanted Bobby to be the one to injure Daniel: it had to be someone with a conscience. You could see Bobby didn't want to do it, and most of his students (aside from Dutch) were starting to open their eyes and see what he's really about.

Chad was great as Dutch in the original. If they can get him to back for Cobra Kai that would be amazing but if he isn't interested, what can you do? Best of luck to him in whatever he decides!

@@Evoldog I love that idea! I could definitely see something like that with Bobby in Season 2. Johnny is in the dojo, his life in shambles after being put through hell by Kreese and several of his students abandoning him, perhaps ready to end it all. Suddenly the door opens and in walks Bobby, who Johnny had no idea was watching him from afar. Distraught over seeing what his old friend has become, he sits Johnny down and they have a long talk about what is truly important in life; perhaps with Bobby sharing stories of some of his own personal struggles over the last 30+ years. Bobby's words start to make sense in Johnny's head and he begins to turn his life around. Perhaps Bobby could even help him train for one final battle against Kreese; to expunge his demons once and for all. It would all be like that scene in Rocky 3. After getting brutally beaten by Lang for the title and then Mick dying, Rocky is disillusioned and doesn't know where to turn. Apollo comes out unexpectedly to give him the motivation he needs to go on and regain not only his title but his pride. And since there were a couple of references to Rocky 3 in Season 1, I think it'd be a neat parallel. Sorry for the long-winded comment. But still, great idea.

Take a look at William Zabka, Rob Garrison and Ron Thomas. Out of the three William Zabka could pass as Johnny's older brother, while Rob Garrison could be Tommy's grandpa. Ron Thomas can be the same generation as Kreese. Looking at William Zabka a person will likely recognise him as Johnny from the Karate Kid. Some people just age more than others, so far William Zabka, Ralph Macchio and Martin Kove have aged well. Elisabeth Shue also.

Calling it now if Dutch comes back from prison in season 5 he'll definitely be helping cobra kai. Terry Silvers, Mike Barnes, Dutch vs. Daniel, Johnny, Chozen. Dutch seemed like the most psychotic out of all the members back in Karate Kid 1.

Honestly, a question I'm much more curious about is, what was Kreese doing in all the years in between KARATE KID 3 and COBRA KAI. Also, why would Johnny say his sensei was dead if Kreese was really still alive?

He said he thought he was dead. Remember, in Karate Kid 3 he was a drunk who lost everything. He shows up again at the end and looks good but after Daniel beats them again the Cobra Kai goes away again and seeing as it was everything to Kreese it wouldn't be out of line to think he may have drunk himself to death, not to mention it is 30+ years later

I’m guessing Kreese faked his death to get away from debt collectors or the Yakuza. In KK3, Terry Silver lies about Kreese’s death so that Daniel would feel more encouraged to enter the tournament.

Kreese was homeless after KK3. He was basically bouncing around and living out of shelters as seen in Cobra Kai. He lied at first saying he had re-enlisted and was training others. but it was all a lie he was rejected so he couldn't serve anymore. Johnny after all this time thought Kreese, because well he might have well been.

Tommy turned good at the end. When Kreese was choking Johnny, he tried to reason with him. Then when that didn’t work he tried to help Johnny only to get a back fist for his troubles. It’s funny cuz Bobby got an elbow to the chest & that enough for him.

@@njc84 Rob Garrison IMO looks like he is old enough to have been the grandfather of Tommy. Ron Thomas could pass as Bobby's father. William Zabka can pass just as an older version of Johny, or an older brother. It is amazing the difference on how some of the Kobra Kai members have aged well and not so well.

Dutch and Barnes would've been a damn good match. Chozen still would've wiped the floor with both of those dudes considering he was Satos best student in his 60 plus years of living. And he was a killer thru and thru with his entire life of being karate students whereas the other two, 5 years for Dutch and maybe 10 for Barnes.

It's funny but right after CK season 1 ended rumors started going around that Sean kanan was going to come back along with Kreese. Then they were pretty much confirming that he was in but they wouldn't say how he fit into the show. Then no more news. Finally the show starts and he's not even in it. What Happened?

DCFCfanatic We know that Sean Kanan is willing to be in the show, and the creators are happy to incorporate characters from the movies, so one of three things must have happened. Either there was a disagreement over money, the shooting schedule conflicted with another project, or the creators decided to save Mike Barnes until season 3. I’m guessing it’s the last one. They would have had to restructure season 2 completely to have Mike Barnes play any significant role, but there are several options for the character in season 3.

Story goes, they deleted a scene where Dutch loses his temper and tackles Daniel, and gets disqualified. I get why they took that out: Bobby gets DQ’ed in the semis, and it would have made Daniel look weak to get 2 cheap wins back to back.
