A video of me using the ARC-8 (Collins ART-13 and BC-348) on 80m CW. Had plans to do a walkthrough of the transmitter, showing off some autotune modules etc, but settled for just a qso. Listen carefully to the , in my mind, beautiful hammering of the keying relay. Enjoy

Really nice radio you've got and the QSO you've just has is just totally amazing and I think you said that your radio was made back in 1940 but that's very cool to have a good radio like that and it is also a piece of history as well which is very interesting stuff. Thanks and best 73's and you might catch me soon one day on the 40 meters and the 20 meters on phone OK cheers and best 73's for now cheers. Stephen M3SNV 73's.

I was 8 Years old when I got interested in Ham Radio, I joined Waco, Texas radio club, and someone gave ne a BC 342-n for SWLing. In 1958-1960 Most Ham Operations was AM. I loved listening on the BC 342n had to return it when we moved to Arkansas, but I learned to build radios in 1964 with Allied Radio Kits and Heath Kits.

Nice rugs. Here in the states I have mostly old military gear that I restore. Back in the 1960's ,we would buy these radios for 5 or 10 dollars and then start cutting and modifying. Now, I try so hard to put everything back original. But, as you know, the VLANKETY CLANK of the relays in the ART13 is really distracting, and you cant send too fast. I designed a solid state regulate 410 volt power supply that I key.I use the Throttle switch plug on the front panel, plugged into my station Transmit/Receive switch to handle keying the 120p volts . Then, inside the ART13, I installed a tiny switching DC supply that is 24vdc to 510 volts.I run that through a pair of isolation diodes to the OPERATE position on the TUNE/OPERATE switch. That keeps N+ on the plates of the 1625 multipliers constantly. The result is you get no chirp on the note, and you can send 25-30wpm with no relays operating. That really makes the ART13 much more fun to operate on CW. And you only have to cut one wire in the ART13 But st my Azores QTH, I have a little Icom 7100a that I use when I'm there for 3-5months every year.It is a perfectly quiet QTH that works very well on our little island. We will have to schedule a contact if you need CU8. I'm restoring my BIG transmitter now. It's a US Army T368. 4-400 final, 500 watts out.Its a beauty. It will take me a few weeks to restore things and repair damage it had from arcing that it had in the PA section. But it should be a pleasure to operate! NU6F CU8/NU6F Ron

Your great fist, combined with the most satisfying transmitter ever manufactured-at least so in my opinion-makes up for one quality video. Every time this video passes me, I cannot digress from watching it; I have been listening to this beautiful operation repeatedly, for about a month, now. Those _heavy_ relays-or solenoids, perchance-have me enjoying this even more. Know You precisely what is behind these telegraph sounder-like clonks? I want to find such heavy relays / solenoids, to simulate this in my own station. Thank You! Seven-three: Moses K. Frost - SM5/M.

Nice video, and nice fist. I just picked up a Signal Corps BC-348-Q in very good condition. It's been recapped, aligned, modern power supply, and 3 prong cord. It reminds me of the BC-312 that my dad had in the house when I was younger. That's why I got it at a Hamfest yesterday in New Hampshire.

Somehow a radio should sound that way, not the way noise generators “developed” in recent decades sound. I myself radio with similar equipment, only Soviet military radios.

In the 1950's you could buy a NEW or next to new ART-13 for like $25-$35. We kids quickly found out that the unit had the AM Broadcast band!!!! All you needed was a long wire you could put up a tree and you could br your own Alan Freed R&R DJ all night or get on the air on Sundays and drown out the preachers or have your own talk show with you friends speculating on local girls or our experiencing hot wiring local Cadillacs and Lincolns...hey, we were kids in the 50's and as long as our fathers and uncles with a ticket didn't catch us....

Hello Tommy, Love your Station. I am building a power supply for my early ART-13, Collins 52286 ATC to use with my BC348Q. I know that there are connections made with the rcvr, but could you explain how do you get the side tone? Do you have a spotting mod to zero beat? Anyway thank you. 73
@SA2CLC
@SA2CLC 3 жыл бұрын
I have only connected the rcvr to the the rcvr antenna binding post on the art-13. The 13 has a spot function, namely the calibrate/tune/operate switch. There are provisions for receiver mute in one of the connectors on the side of the 13, and the 13 does provide side tone but I do not use that. Feel better to listen to my own signal.
