I just discovered your channel, so I don’t know what all you have to offer. I am a pretty good Spanish speaker, but I have so much more to learn. Maybe you could make a video about slang that is unique to Colombia? I just learned the meaning of chimbo/chimba and parce/parcero. I would love to learn more words that will allow me to make a more personal connection with Colombians. Thank You!

My dad was from Barranquilla. My mom was born in Ibagué, but moved to Cali and then to Bogotá. I was born in the states. During my childhood I would go to Colombia every few years and spend the whole summer with my extended family. As an adult I haven’t been able to travel there as often. The last time I went to Colombia was about 10 years ago, but I’m hoping to go back this year. 💛💙❤️

I grew up surrounded by relatives speaking with a Paisa accent. I currently live in the US and never understood why I had so much trouble keeping up with spanish spoken by people here, many of which are not Colombian. This video helped me finally understand it's because they speak so darn fast compared to what I grew up listening to! Yes, different spanish speaking peoples use different words but if they speak slower I can figure out the gist of what they're saying. Keeping up is the hard part!

I'm a born and raised "Norte Americano". I met a Colombian-American on a train in NYC, and married her. Her family was from Bogota, and when she spoke Spanish to them (otherwise he spoke perfect English all the time), I was enamored by the beauty of their dialect. I made study flashcards and would review them on my subway train rides to and from work, but what I should have done (while still married to her) was to solicit Spanish instruction from her. Here I am, many years later, twice retired from "work", and seriously seeking to learn Spanish, particularly the Rolos/Cachacos dialect. I just found your channel and you gave me no choice whatsoever, so I "liked and subbed". BTW - you've a beautiful country indeed - I've been to Bogota, Medellin, Cartegena, and several other places - even the Salt Cathedral, before it collapsed and had to be re-built, turning it into a Disney-like attraction, que lastima!

Great video! A friend of mine grew up in Colombia and was telling me about the different accents, which brought me to your channel. I thought of the Irish when you were describing rolo, because the Irish often have a little lift toward the end of phrases that also makes it sound as if they’re always asking a question, too! I love learning about different languages, cultures and people. Would love to visit Bogotá one day.

This is really awesome. I'm making my foray into C-level Spanish now. My mom is from Colombia but didn't teach me growing up so I've had to learn throughout the years in school and myself. I've had friends (and lovers lol) of various countries and have been exposed to a lot of different accents dialects but I'd love to hammer down a specific accent/cadence as I begin working on my linguistics so that my Spanish has it's own identity. On another note, heLLLOOOOO David from Medellin 😍 hahaha.

I just came across this video because my father being from Bogota I wanted to hear an authentic Bogotano accent. I say that because my father lived in the USA for many years before I was born and he had lost his accent and picked up more of a costeño because of friends and environment. Its funny that you said that that comment about Pastusos because my Dad used to call me that and I never knew what that meant. I've come to realize now what he meant lol.

When you talked about your hometown with a costeno accent, it seemed to me you were speaking about 1/2 the speed of many people on the coast. My girlfriend's dad and her son speak similarly to the guy in your video from San Juan del Cesar. They speak so fast and drop so many consonants I often have no clue what they are talking about.🤣

Hi, I don't know if you'll get to read this comment. So, in San Andres, Old Providence and Ketlina Island spanish is actually not our first language, we have a dialect called San Andres Creole which is similar to Jamaican patois and other carribean dialects. Now, when speaking spanish is usually with a caribbean accent especially words with with "R". In my case, I lived in other Colombian cities like Barranquilla (Where they have costeño accent) and in Medellín (Paisa accent) but I've been told my accent is mostly neutral. I can share some videos with peoole talking creole if you like 😊

Hello, thank you OP (Original vid-Poster) I I thank you for providing a very well done, and well edited video to learn from. Muchas Gracias..!! I live in St. Louis Missouri North America. We share the same time Zone with Colombia in the summer time. I'm considering traveling to Colombia in a few months. It is currently our rainy season in St. Louis. We are partially known for our "Botanical Gardens".. SO the Rain is helpful for the garden. However we receive much rain. Sometimes after a month of thunderstorms & rain showers, we have some heavy flooding. I am curious how is the rain and flooding in parts of Colombia during the rainy seasons??? It rains so much in Colombia, I wonder where all the water is going? I want to choose a home that will not be impacted by the rain each year. Thank you for any assistance you or any viewers choose to provide!! TY TY TY!!

Rainy seasons in Colombia occurs mostly during march to may and september to november. In mountain regions, where live most of the people, rains come suddenly, so "weather channel" is just worthless there. Pacific coast has the most rain drops during several months (and so is called the most rainy region of the planet) while caribean coast is mostly dry, but when rain comes it makes it big... Finally, water goes to rivers in many cases but floodings occurs sometimes. You know: climate change is inevitable...

In Colombia only Departments of Santander (Santandereanos), Nariño (Pastusos) and Boyacá (Boyacenses) pronounce different Y and Ll (mainly in rural zones).

In general, in Spanish the "ll" sounds like a "g" with an "i". So the "y".

I didn't watch Narcos, but it's my understanding that the actors were not really colombian.. Try "Pablo Escobar el Patrón del Mal" lower budget than Narcos but it's 100% colombian.

Your best bet is to listen to Mexican or Peruvian dialects bc they enunciated very clearly. Colombian and Venezuelan accents are very musical, but they tend to sometimes drop syllables. My family is from Venezuela, and I love the accent, but to learn I'm relying on Colombian and Peruvian speakers. You need to practice your listening skills. That means getting audiobooks or watching KZfaq videos with only the sound. You have to acclimate your ear to recognizing words. Just like when you were a kid learning how to speak your first language (English?), you did it with something called "comprehensible input". You used context clues and active listening skills, and you weren't afraid to try to speak with your limited vocabulary or inaccurate grammar. You simply picked up the language as you went. Now that you're an adult, you have to apply that same skillset to newer languages that you want to acquire. I say acquire, instead of learn, bc acquiring a language requires absorption of the language which relies on the language centers of your brain - whereas learning a language activates the more methodical and logical side of the brain. It's better to activate the side of the brain that is most receptive to language, so start listening intently and proactively. Listen to music, books, movies, KZfaq videos, etc. Stay away from subtitles and scripts, they'll only hinder you. You can transition into reading, writing, and speaking, once you've trained your ear. You don't have to be an expert, you just need to be fluent enough to have basic conversations. Once you reach semi-fluency, your confidence will soar and you'll have the motivation to try out other dialects and accents.

@@YourMajesty143 …thank you, and yes you’re spot on, as I’ve heard this method of listening to a variety of content in order learn a language. My problem or issue, is that I’m not a tv, sitcom, or program viewer…not even on youtube, but I’m going to have to bite the bullet and do what’s needed to help me learn Spanish. Just curious…if your family is from Venezuela, didn’t you have Spanish spoken at the house, or….? A friend’s parents who were from Mexico and the rule at their house in Wisconsin was Spanish always had to be spoken inside the house, which helped him learn both Spanish at home from birth, and English outside the house.
