I've been printing a lot in my home color darkroom and will finally begin showcasing this process here. Color printing is a bit challenging especially in a minimalist home setup. Nonetheless, it is very fun to do and worth the challenge. Here, I print s 35mm negative onto 8x10 Fuji Crystal Archive paper.
Here is the gear I use:
Meopta Axomat 35mm Color Enlarger (Cheap! about $200)
Jobodrum 4541 Print and Processing Tank
Jobo Rolling Base
Jobo Darkroom Squeegee
Adox RA4 Dev and Blix
Fujifilm Crystal Archive Paper

The various streaks he got on his test prints seem to come from lack of an adequate volume of chemistry being used. The minimum amount required for each process sequence is determined by the physical design of the tank (which would be stated by its maker) and the rate of exhaustion of the chemistry (which is determined by the amount of print surface being processed), which is usually specified by the makers of the chemistry. You must use the larger volume of chemistry specified if the amounts differ between the manufacturers. Developer used in a drum is going to be exhausted in one process pass and cannot be reused. The blix can commonly be reused, but the practice is to pour the used blix back into the storage bottle to mix wit the fresh contents, then pull the amount needed for the next print. I think he said the he pulled 2 oz of blix and reused that same chemistry for successive prints. The bix would exhaust in a couple of prints at that rate and cause later prints to fail.

Thanks for commenting. During my test prints I usually don’t pay too much attention to the amount of chems used. As long as I can accurately see color and exposure in a certain part of the image, that’s good enough for me. For final print I definitely take better care. Interesting tip about the blix. I haven’t noticed any degradation in that step after using the same chem 10-15 times during a session. I will keep my eye on it Would love to hear more insights if you have any more 😀🍻

hey man, try wash it with water between develop and blix. it would get rid off the brown on the side of the paper. i use tray, not drum. cos always be some problem with the image when using drum, lines or brown side
@ribsy

hey - the brown on the side of the paper is actually a light leak. i was not storing my unexposed test print paper properly because i wanted it to be easy to access in the dark. washing in between dev and blix isn't needed

Analog seems to be coming back full swing. Check if Nova still make their nice vertical processors for RA4. Tempered by two acquarium tubes that you fired through a timer programmed at lunchtime. Jobo had a great color analyzer (ColorLine2) that you would use to do the _"white balance"_ on the image edge or a blank frame and a timer counterpart which name I cannot remember now. Those two gadgets will save you €€€ in paper and time.

Wow! Just found your channel and subscribed immediately. Was just searching for information about building a darkroom at home.. I wasn’t quite sure if I should go through the trouble of setting up, but your enthusiasm convinced me! One reason for my reluctance was that the chemicals are toxic and I don’t unfortunately have a good dark ventilated spot in my bathroom...Are you generally worried about the toxicity of the chemicals? Thank you again! I’d love to support your channel with more than sharing your excellent videos!

Enjoyed seeing the process and way of thinking here. And then I thought, "What if I wanted to just 'automate' this for snapshots?" You know, basically print a roll onto 4x6's. Is there anything at all practical for doing that at home or is it strictly one neg at a time in the enlarger? I suppose you could print three 4x6 images on one 8x11 if you masked off parts of the paper each time.

I am getting back into color printing - question: do you use same developer for tests and then switch to fresh. I remember something like the fresh developer gave a different color/contrast for the new print (through me off a bit). Thanks for the great succinct refresher vid.

Nope! I develop via doses of developer so each dose gets discarded after 1 use. A dose is very small like 50-100ml

Man I was surprised at how easy that looked. Am I right in thinking the dev time was only 45 seconds?
@ribsy
@ribsy 4 жыл бұрын
yea its not too bad! correct - the dev time is 45 secs, and the blix time is another 45 secs. doing both in the jobo makes things easier since you don't have to fumble around in the darkness. open trays are technically easier but then you have to be in full darkness.

Hey Ribsy - thanks for doing these videos.. im also trying to buy a Jobo based on your process but cant find any info on what is required. Do you need a center core for your set up, or is it just the tank + a "light tight funnel" + the cap? I'm hesitant to buy one without knowing if I need a center core similar to developing film. Thanks in advance!

I have no experience with film but internet research tells me that print paper probably reacts to light negatively i.e is itself a negative. So when you develop a negative print exposed from the original negative, it gets reverted back to proper colors.

Hey man, thanks for this great video! I am looking into starting printing at home, do you recommend a certain type of enlarger? And is there a big difference if you want to develop medium format at home? Thanks!
@ribsy
@ribsy 3 жыл бұрын
hey! its totally up to you and the type of film you need to print. if you are only doing BW, then only get a BW enlarger. is you want color, then get one that handles both color and BW. if you are going to be printing medium format then def get one that can handle medium format negatives and has a the proper lens for it. there is no one answer. once you are ready to print -- my guide might help 😊: payhip.com/b/n9RA

Do you use the Adox Ra4 kit at room temperature? I tried doing this and have a magenta cast. Also on the borders(non exposed parts). Could this be because the blix is not at 35 deg, or is it due to an old batch of paper? Do you have any suggestions?
@ribsy
@ribsy 3 жыл бұрын
from what i hear, yes it can work at room temp but you will need longer developing times. i simply use mine warmed in a hot bath (don't measure) and i am able to keep the usual 45 sec dev time and also control color properly. the non exposed parts should always be very white. if not, you either had a light leak or your blix is weak/exhausted. try extending your dev times
