Color mixing is magic and will significantly improve your watercolor painting. Follow me for a how to on making brown and gray neutrals using just your primary colors.
I'll show you my three favorite primary colors to use. Phthalo blue, Quinacridone Magenta and Diarylide yellow. We'll also throw in some black for good measure. This is a great exercise for beginners!

The color mixing lessons are invaluable! Last time I took art was in the 7th grade, and let's just say that was a while ago.

You’re welcome. I love making color mixing accessible to beginners. It can be such a daunting prospect but doesn’t have to be.

Thank you! Color mixing can be so intimidating, breaking it down to uncomplicate it helps out so much, it's like duh, it's not that hard, lol! Looking forward to hopefully more color mixing tutorials. Again, thank you

Hi. I really thought that this was a helpful tutorial. I am looking forward to actually trying to do these mixes as a sample. I am a beginner, but mostly watching as many different types of videos and collecting supplies before I actually start. Years ago, I started oil painting, but eventually switched to acrylics for years, then stopped because of working full time and having a family. I always wanted to try watercolor. Now it is finally t 12:32 ime. I have watched your videos before and think you are a very good teacher. Thank you so much for posting and sharing.

This video was awesome, thanks. When you rinse your brush off are you also leaving the water in the brush, or dabbing it on something to get the water out?? Thanks so much ❤❤

It’s a combination of rinsing and dabbing. Sometimes I leave water in the brush if I feel I need it. But often I am dabbing some of the water out.

@@shanacirce2667 We all learn differently. I can learn from you. The way you are with colors is almost magical. I won't bore you with back story. I would learn so much by seeing what you could do with the palates I mentioned to you. I will pay you. Name a price, but first Daniel Smith has earth palate and one of blues. I get lost in these colors--they're so beautiful. Then I watch what you do with colors and I start imaging seeing you with the afore mentioned colors. Just so you know you have already helped me become a better artist. I imagine you are very busy and I appreciate your time. Thank you Tabor J Ayers

I use a QOR set for most of my work. The palette I show you in the video is made of this set. amzn.to/3Q7PUvB But I highly recommend the Daniel Smith Essentials set for those who are just starting out on their color mixing journey and want to start with a limited palette. amzn.to/3I9X3tx

Thanks very much for that. I would really like to know what palette you use because there’s plenty of mixing space and I think 24 colours is totally adequate.

Thank you som much for this! I'm having a bit of a problem with mixing my colors. Ive noticed that i have a beautiful color when applying wet. But when it dries on the papier, the colors will seperate and the primary colors i used start showing up more then the mixed color! What am indoing wrong? 😢

Hmmm? Well, it can depend on the type of pigment and the brand. Some pigments that are granulating can separate more easily when mixed (Ultramarine is known for this). Some more entry level paints may also separate a bit more than you would want.
