I have a theory that Nick Cage is actually a genius. Somewhere during his earlier career he realized that he could be a great actor, and people would maybe remember him for a while, or he could become “Nick Cage!” and people would remember him forever. Gotta say it’s an effective strategy.

I really like the detail you added about magenta; it added some insight about their choice in using it. I always thought they chose it because that particular shade is kind of eerie and aggressive, but it makes way more sense and is more effective when you know that magenta "doesn't exist" and is consequently the only way the characters and the audience can perceive the "Color" in the movie.

During the scene at night with Ward at his tent reading a book, he hears a noise in the woods and goes to investigate. He shines his flashlight and catches a glimpse of the color, when suddenly his jeep starts by itself. The headlights of his jeep illuminate the book he was reading which is none other than "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood, considered by H.P. Lovecraft to be the best supernatural tale in English literature.

In other words, if they do it right with good CGI I really don't see an issue. If they don't, well, we don't really have to watch it to know it's bad these days, so no big deal, we'll always have the original. @@user-wy5rs2zj6u I think people don't talk nearly enough about Lovecraft's growth over the course of his tragically short life. In one of his letters, he basically says that he was embarrassed at the views he held when he was younger. He was disappointed with The Shadow Over Innsmouth, thinking that its themes were a return to views he no longer held. He started out heavily xenophobic and racist, but that isn't how he was at the end.

@@impartialthrone2097 A lot of it was also, as with most fucked up people, caused or at least helped along by his mother. She I think wished he had been a girl and made him keep his hair long, and constantly told him he was hideous so shouldn't go outside as people would be scared of his disgusting face. He was very xenophobic and racist, but he was just generally scared of people as well, he didn't really like to go outside. But there was a lot of contradiction about him as well, for example his wife was Jewish, and 1 of his cousins I think it was that he was very close with was gay, which he knew about but still was his friend. Theres also the fact though that his fear of others is what helped him write these stories, as they are essentially his fears basically everything outside his home, and more so things further afield he knew nothing of. Yes it doesn't in any way excuse how racist he was, like racist to the point that even people of the times thought he was extreme, but without being fucked up like he was we likely wouldn't have gotten these stories.

For those who haven't read the story, I'd like to elaborate a bit more. 1. The name Nahum is pronounced as far as i know like "mayhem" but with an n instead of m. So Nathan is pretty close. 2. Lavinia the witchy girl is the daughter of Old Guy Watley in that Yogsothoth story, the dunwich horror. This was a nod to that Lavinia. Also the Necronomicon, a fictional lovecraftian book of supernatural power, plays a big role in that particular story. As does the Miskatonic university in most lovecraftian stories, including Re-animator. 3. In the story they were looking for a place to build a water reservoir and the blasted heath was a possible spot, but after hearing the story the protagonist vows to never drink water from that reservoir.

Ward (or at least the character Movie Ward stands in for) wasn't a random guy in the book, he was a land surveyor. He was checking the area to see if it would be okay to convert the blasted heath into a reservoir. As this goes on, I think I can see why they changed it. Having him be a guy who does water tests lets them make him the character who tests the water for them so they don't have to cast a new character. Okay, I'll let that one go.

I was fortune enough to once work with Nick Cage, on a film up in Vancouver. I was just an extra, but myself and two others were selected to sit with him at a poker table at a casino scene for just a quick scene. Quick but it took like 5 hours to film it and Nick Cage was on set the whole time. Despite his reputation as being a bit crazy, he's seriously down to Earth and such a nice guy. He really was far more ordinary and approachable than I ever expected and was talking to everyone, extras included with no pretentious attitude at all while there were dull moments when they were doing lighting or something. Nick Cage = Nice guy!

For me Lovecraft represents an idea that we utterly fail to do as a culture. Loving Lovecraft is the very definition of separating the Art from the Artist. Being able to do that, maybe even forgiveness since you can't ascribe modern morals to someone long dead, is being able to prove ACTUAL open mindedness. Really great.

2:38 I must say, Lovecraft is actually very correct about this! It is, in fact, very, very implausible that a being from outer space, with a completely different evolutionary path, adapted to a completely different atmosphere from ours, would look anything like something we have here on earth, much less like a human being. If y'all are interested, I suggest You watch Trey the Explainer's video on scientifically plausible aliens. He talks about the origin of the Gray Aliens, like how they were actually supposed to represent humans from the future and not aliens at all, and what an actual alien would look like. And then shows examples of scientifically plausible aliens in mainstream culture, like the Xenomorphs, Lovecraftian monsters of course, and all the creatures seen in the Avatar movie (except for the Navi, obviously) It's very interesting :) (Sorry if my english is kinda wonky, my native language is Spanish)
@MonkeyDBatman
@MonkeyDBatman 3 жыл бұрын
Idk, scientists have said that aliens would look pretty similar to humans. It depends on where they live, I it's a planet very similar to ours I'd say they would be pretty similar to us. A planet not like ours though would probably contain much different lifeforms.

You know a lot of people see Nathan’s freak out in the car as only another glorious Nick Cage moment (and don’t get me wrong; it totally is), but I think what made this freak out work so well is the true feeling of impotent helplessness that he expresses with it. You KNOW WHY he’s mad; he’s supposed to be the breadwinner, the man of the house, and yet with every passing moment more and more of his control over the things he knows crumbles into dust. I UNDERSTAND why he freaks out because, in all complete fairness, I’d probably do the exact same thing if I were in his position. It’s a freak out with REAL WEIGHT behind it, and in my opinion that’s what makes it all the more enjoyable and powerful.

Honestly, I've seen so many failed film and fan film attempts at making an even half decent adaptation of Lovecraftian stories. This was legitimately not a bad re-imagining of the Colour out of Space. It ended up being a really good Lovecraft film, even if the budget clearly set up some limitations. I'd be OK to see more adaptations of those stories to this level.

All the wild tropes he's done came together for this role. 👏👏👏👏 We love positive movie reviews that won't waste our time or make us want to rip our eyes out.

They bought a hydrologist cause hydrologists also have some working and studying experience regarding the wider subject of geology. Given that they live in a remote area, it's obvious the police would take him instead of wasting time waiting for an actual geologist to come by.

Joseph Perez we were waking in the French quarter and they were filming a movie of his (that apparently never ended up getting released). After they finished the scene he was eating lunch and then waved to him when he looked up. If that helps clarify

I think this is the first and only review I've seen that points out how Nicolas Cage's character starts to embody the father he hates. It's a great detail that really informs the character that so few people seem to notice because "Lol, he a meme." While he is a goofy actor and a funny person, I think he's a way better actor than most folks give him credit.

Honestly, he is a great actor. It's just that he's usually in mediocre movies. Partly it's because Nic is hurting for cash, having made some crazy purchases in his day, and also because he just likes keeping himself working. He has an odd view of acting, but I feel like it's in the same way some painters view their own art. In short, he is definitely an oddity, but I respect him.

Agents of shield, which takes place in the MCU, features the Robbie Reyes of ghost rider, so I’m not sure whether Feige would want to introduce another ghost rider.

I mean it is a very popular Lovecraft story, probably ranked up their alongside Call of Cthuhlu and At the Mountains of Madness, so it'd make since for people to want to adapt the popular stuff.

The Dunwich Horror movie seems to be in limbo since Stanley was accused by one of his screenwriters of something along the lines of abusive relationship. Which SpectreVision who produced this film has dropped Stanley's projects and made it so any revenue from Color of Space be given to Anti-domestic violence charities. Stanley is now in legal battle with criminal complaints for libel and harassment from Amaris...so yeah...probably won't be seeing his adaptation of Dunwich Horror anytime soon if ever...
